PS3 audio selection?

When playing VIDEO_TS rips that have DTS/Dolby5.1/Stereo tracks to a Sony BDP370 player, you can cycle through the audio choices by pressing the 'audio' button on the player's remote (great feature!). But, on a PS3 I only see 2-channel stereo. Is there any way to get the DTS or at least the Dolby 5.1 track to play on the PS3?

Re: PS3 audio selection?

Check in the console and see if you have transcoding set to 2 channel.

Could you provide information about that VIDEO_TS file (ffmpeg -i <file>) ?

This MPEGTS file should be delivered in native format to the PS3 (with all audio tracks) like Sony BDP. (Only MPEGTS with AVC/h264 video will be remux with the first audio track)
So check the PS3 usermanual how to select the proper audio track.

Re: PS3 audio selection?

Here's a sample ffmpeg output.
Input #0, mpeg, from 'VTS_03_1.VOB':
Duration: 00:19:52.4, start: 0.233567, bitrate: 7202 kb/s
Stream #0.0[0x1e0], 29.97 fps(r): Video: mpeg2video, yuv420p, 720x480, 8500 kb/s
Stream #0.1[0x80]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, stereo, 448 kb/s
Stream #0.2[0x81]: Audio: ac3, 48000 Hz, 5:1, 448 kb/s
Stream #0.3[0x8a]: Audio: 0x0000

On the BDP370, pressing the audio button to cycle to track 3 shows 'DTS 5.ch 48kHz 754kbps' (and of course sounds great).
Playing the same thing on the ps3, the display shows '2 channel 48kHz 444kbs (the rate varies a bit) and the only audio options are left, right or left+right. Apparently it is playing the 1st stream with no way to select anything else. It has been a while since I've used ps3mediaserver, but I thought it presented different options under a #transcode folder so you could pick which stream the PS3 would see.

Re: PS3 audio selection?

I did not have a PS3, but after a googling, I found that...
To change the audio track on the PS3, click the Triangle and in the menu, go to the audio option, and it should cycle throught the tracks. It has worked for me, so if that doesn't work, I am not sure why. But this is with movies, not with recordings.

But I also found that:
Limitations of video playback on the PS3
The PS3 does not let you switch audio tracks, so only select one audio track.
The PS3 will not play DTS tracks from the XMB, make sure you select a Dolby Digital (AC3) track.
The PS3 will not show subtitles in video files started from the XMB.

Re: PS3 audio selection?

The PS3 can play DTS from a DVD disc, but you have to select it from the disc menu. You can't switch audio tracks on the fly either with the audio button on the remote or with the opttions/audio on-screen popup. And when streaming, there is no way to access the disc menu functions. Also, I remember now why I haven't used ps3mediaserver for a while. I have a mac with OSX 10.5 and the last releases have an mencoder version that crashes unless you use 10.6 or later. But I thought the versions that worked presented a #transcode folder where you could choose versions remuxed with the audio track of your choice.

This feature is not available yet with serviio.

Re: PS3 audio selection?

Thanks - my preference would be to magically transcode/remux so the default track played would be the first available of DTS->Dolby5.1->Stereo without having to deal with picking a #transcode choice at all, but I mostly play music concert DVDs this way and don't know if that would generalize to movies where the tracks might be different languages.
