Sony Bravia wmv files stopped playing, nothing changed

Hello everyone,

First post, I do apologise for yet another one of those questions, I have tried to find answers in the search options, but haven't really been successful, partly because I am not a programmer and most of the file log discussion/code etc go over my head. In any case, I will try to describe the situation as accurately as possible, maybe someone can help me.

We have a Sony Bravia NX7 40 (says on the box), bought 1 year ago (August 2011) and run it with a 2010 profile since the first day we started using Serviio. It's been working perfectly for the past year, no complaints. We have always been able to play .mp4 files and .wmv files, but all of a sudden this week .mp4 files will only play if/when I change the profile to 2011. But then .wmv files are invisible, it comes up with "no items to display". Switching back to 2010 profile, everything is there again, but it doesn't play. Before I changed the profile (which allows me to view .mp4 without a problem), the first attempt at playing .wmv gave me audio, but not image, now I only get a second or two of audio and then the pause symbol appears on the screen, which stays black and afterwards silent... The last time I was able to play both formats without problems is a few weeks ago, I wasn't aware of any changes, definitely nothing has been changed "by hand", but I am not sure about updates etc, as those are done automatically. We run Serviio 1.0.1 and as far as I can see ffmpeg has recently been updated: August 9th, 2012. I am not sure where I can find a version, if there are different ones.

I have followed the advice to generate a log file for one of the problem files, I hope it may help. However, I really am not a programmer, I can follow a detailed "manual", but I don't really know how to modify or enhance code, I don't even know where to do this.

So, here is the log

It all seems likely that something has changed with the update in early August, can that be the case?

Thanks for your help everyone, and I do hope I am not too much of a nuisance with my question, I really have been trying to find a solution before.

NX7 40 ?? what is this model ? Could you provide the exact model number :
Image
What is your region, US, UK, etc ?
Could you try this : http://wiki.serviio.org/doku.php?id=device_sf ?

Its probably due to device firmware update, or do you think that brake since serviio update ?
What is your OS, windows, linux ?

Re: Sony Bravia wmv files stopped playing, nothing changed

Sorry for the long delay, school start and all and a bad headcold.

so, to answer some questions, Location is UK, we are running Windows 7.

The device showing in Servio comes up as KDL-40NX713, I can't look behind the TV to verify this, as it's wall mounted and I can't take it off myself without any help (which I don't have at the moment). I hope this will help.

The situation hasn't changed, i.e. I can not play WMV files at all with audio and video as stated in the first post, regardless of the profile, and I definitely used to before! In the 2010 profile, MP4 files are showing on the TV with the extension "AVC", in the 2011 Profile they are showing as "MPEG2", which then plays.

I'm afraid I can not understand at all what you were trying to say in this sentence:
or do you think that brake since serviio update ?
, but if it is a firmware issue, is there a way to change it again? Keeping in mind I wouldn't know the first thing about it, i.e. where to find it in the first place?

Thanks again for your help!

- your UK Sony KDL-40NX713 is a 2010 model (second digit refer to the year model (0|1)=2010, (2)=2011 and (5)=2012 )
- your model does not support WMV file in native format. You can verify by selecting "Generic Profile" on serviio console and save, then try to play the WMV file.
- With "Sony Bravia TV (2010)" profile, WMV files are transcoded to MPEG2VIDEO, a format supported by your TV model.

I just realize that your file is not a standard WMV file. There are 2 video tracks, and the first one is a mjpeg format.

Re: Sony Bravia wmv files stopped playing, nothing changed

Thanks for the explanation. It does help to understand the issue, but it doesn't really explain why the files were being played before and not now... I have created those wmv file in Windows live movie maker, since they were recordings with lots of advertising which I got rid of this way. It was an easy and quick solution to a previously annoying problem, hence that choice, I am sure there are better ones, but I do NOT want to have to do them all again, because someone else decided that this format wasn't going to be supported any more...

Thanks for that, I will try to see if they still play with the Generic Profile, which I can't right now, cause the TV is in use. At least it would be a workaround for a time, thanks. Since I have always used the 2010 profile, which used to work perfectly I am still at a loss though, why it doesn't do it any more, and I didn't change anything. I changed the Profile to 2011 when I discovered the MP4 issue, but I only did this, because I had tried to play a wmv file before (in the original unchanged 2010 profile) which didn't work, so a different choice was made which was the MP4 file... that one then played after I changed the profile, but made wmvs disappear completely off the listing.

Not sure what it means that my file is not a standard wmv file, is this a good or a bad thing?

Thanks for your help so far!

Re: Sony Bravia wmv files stopped playing, nothing changed

So problem does not come from WMV file but with MP4 files, MP4 file should play with "Sony 2010" profile.
Could you provide information of MP4 file that does not play with "Sony 2010" profile ?
Could you enable detailed logging (see signature link), try to play a MP4 file and post log here ?

Re: Sony Bravia wmv files stopped playing, nothing changed

No actually, the problem is with both... Neither seems to be playing any more with the 2010 profile but they used to play both.

I have created a log for one of the MP4 files.

I hope this helps.... This line "[h264 @ 014CCA60] time_scale/num_units_in_tick invalid or unsupported (0/0)" appears in RED in the CMD Window.... I'll have to post the detailed log later, kids are watching something else...

To clarify again, neither format, wmv NOR MP4, plays in the 2010 profile, but both used to without problems. I can get MP4 to work when changing to 2011 Profile, but not WMV, those files are now totally inaccessible, they are visible in the 2010 profile (but the same folder appears empty under the 2011 profile) and start playing, but only audio for 2-3 sec, then everything stops and the pause symbol appears. I haven't been able to check the Generic Profile yet if WMV plays there. However, even if they do, I am then forced to switch between 2010 (for everything else), 2011 (for MP4) and Generic (for WMV) files at all times... which is (to say the least) inconvenient. Can I just switch back to a previous version of ffmpeg.exe? Would that even solve the issue, and/or is it going to mess up other things? Or can I specify that I would like certain file formats to be transcoded to specific formats? If yes, how and where could I do that?

Thanks again!

Ok, is this what you are after?:

I changed the profile to Generic and that effectively removes everything from the server.. i.e. there are no items to display when I try to open Serviio on the TV. I have also been a little more patient and waited after I opened both, am MP4 and a wmv file. The MP4 file shows no video and the audio is music only, no speech. With the MWV file, the same happens, no video, but the whole soundtrack seems to be there (speech and music), however it seems like it is accessing the file somewhere at random in the middle, not the start of the file... I am getting really confused. When I try to fast forward to a different section (just because I could), everything stops and the pause symbol appears.

So, at the moment I am still at square one. The above log is for the time I tried to access first an MP4 file and then a WMV file.

Thanks for your help, as always!

Well, I had done what it said in the "detailed logging " link, but I had not stopped the service properly. Now I have done that, and the file is pretty big, I think... I need to break it up in order to attach it, since it's 3400 Kb and only 500 are allowed... or is there any other way?

Thanks ever more!

Ok,

as far as I can see 99% of the file is verifying the data in my drive. Is this correct? I have now cut out all that information, and have a file worth 221KB with what I hope will be the relevant information for the two files I tried to run. Please let me know if that's what you need.

Thanks again!

Re: Sony Bravia wmv files stopped playing, nothing changed

Hum, its strange...

1/ We can see that MP4 is remuxed (video track and audio track was copied to mpegts container):
C:\Program Files (x86)\Serviio\bin\\..\lib/ffmpeg.exe -fflags +genpts -i "G:\Animated and general kids\T\Thunderbirds\THUNDERBIRDS3_4.mp4" -y -copyts -c:v copy -vbsf h264_mp4toannexb -c:a copy -map 0:0 -map 0:1 -sn -f mpegts "E:\Transcoding\Serviio\transcoding-temp-15024-sony2010-ORIGINAL.stf"

So the original video track is probably weird, could you provide MediaInfo tool result (in text format) of this MP4 file ?

2/ We can also see that WMV file is transcoded to mpegts/mpeg2video/ac3 => It should work normally
C:\Program Files (x86)\Serviio\bin\\..\lib/ffmpeg.exe -i "G:\Animated and general kids\B\Ben and Holly\05. Daisy and Polly.wmv" -y -threads 3 -copyts -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 17000k -maxrate:v 17000k -bufsize:v 17000k -vf pad=854:480:107:0:black,setdar=4:3 -r 24000/1001 -g 15 -c:a ac3 -b:a 384k -ac 2 -map 0:0 -map 0:2 -sn -f mpegts "E:\Transcoding\Serviio\transcoding-temp-13804-sony2010-ORIGINAL.stf"
Could you also provide MediaInfo tool result (in text format) of this WMV file ?
Could you open a windows terminal and try locally the same ffmpeg command line and post here the ffmpeg log ?

Re: Sony Bravia wmv files stopped playing, nothing changed

1/ For the MP4 file, the problem is due to the h264 profile level not supported by Sony device ( max supported 4.1).
Format profile : Main@L5.1

So when AVC/h264 video track is copied and delivered in native format, the TV does not display it.
But Serviio should detect this high profile level and transcode to mpeg2video, that is not the case, I don't know why ?
A workarround, could be to remux these files manually and change h264 profile level.
Install TsMuxer tool, open mp4 file, on "General Track Options" change level to 4.1, select "TS muxing" output and start muxing. A new ts file will be created, you can add it to serviio library.

2/For the WMV file, I need some information during the ffmpeg transcoding process.
Could you open a windows terminal and try the following command line and post here the ffmpeg log result ?
ffmpeg.exe -i "G:\Animated and general kids\B\Ben and Holly\05. Daisy and Polly.wmv" -y -threads 3 -copyts -c:v mpeg2video -b:v 17000k -maxrate:v 17000k -bufsize:v 17000k -vf pad=854:480:107:0:black,setdar=4:3 -r 24000/1001 -g 15 -c:a ac3 -b:a 384k -ac 2 -map 0:0 -map 0:2 -sn -f mpegts "E:\Transcoding\Serviio\transcoding-temp-13804-sony2010-ORIGINAL.stf"

Re: Sony Bravia wmv files stopped playing, nothing changed

Thanks so much for all your help, Illico!

It looks like what puzzles you is exactly what happened, something that's been working before, i.e. Serviio detecting the "abnormality" and transcoding it accordingly in the 2010 profile doesn't happen any more out of some strange reason we can't figure out. In the 2011 profile, however, this process seems to work just fine, so go figure. Since this is after all the minor of the two problems, since a simple switch to 2011 profile will cure it and it takes a few seconds only, I shall leave this as it is... Manually changing them would be a lot more work after all.

Just out of curiousity, is there a way to assign a specific transcoding to a specific file format? Could I "force" Serviio to always transcode MP4 as mpeg2video, regardless of other specifications and would that work on all MP4 files? Keeping in mind my limited abilities with code...?

In regards to the WMV file, I hear and obey:

Well.Switch from 2010 to 2011 is a good solution.
Could you try another idea...could you rename the mp4 file (simply add an "_" before the .mp4 extension), and force a library refresh.
Hope that after rescan, serviio will well detect the high profile level.

Caithlinn wrote:Just out of curiousity, is there a way to assign a specific transcoding to a specific file format?

Yes, by editing the Sony profile on profiles.xml file.

Yes you can, but All mp4 files will be processed when they could been played in native format..

;-)
Its seems that ffmpeg could not transcode this WMV file to MPEG2VIDEO, we can see a lot of weird message, and only one frame is computed...
Sorry, but I don't have a good solution...

Re: Sony Bravia wmv files stopped playing, nothing changed

Thank you so much for all your help, Illico!

I have tried to add an "_" to the mp4 files, but no joy.

I am still not sure why this is all happening when it used to play just fine a few weeks ago... if there was a firmware upgrade, how do I find out about it and is there a way to downgrade? Or could it be an issue with the ffmpeg version I am running, can I revert to an older one there? Or am I essentially then limiting myself forever? In the long run I guess I should look at converting those WMV files and not make new ones, but since you mentioned there is a way to make sure specific formats are only ever transcoded in a specific way, could I do this for WMV files? I only have wmv files I created myself (on Windows Live Movie Maker) and don't mind if there is a "set" way, rather than letting the TV sort itself, which of course would be great, but simply doesn't seem to happen.

Thanks again!

I have seen that the Sony firmware has just been updated (on EX501:PKG4.114EUL-0108) but I don't know what are the impacts.
