Re: Android Console

I was going to wait, but it would mean I won't be handing out anything until around 5th jan.

This is really a very very early release that most people would not find usable, however for everyone who does try it, it saves me creating an emulator for that configuration to test it out. I'm also hoping that this first release will help to raise any fundamental usability issues that exist before I go ahead.

Can you try to use it, tell me what is useful, what is not, what you want, what was not obvious at first. Then also try to break it, do silly things, click around everywhere rapidly (I know about the screen rotating and so you don't need to do that).

This way I can review the feedback over the holidays an plan how to fix the issues I've listed plus what other people find out.

@ZIP - still getting 'The extension apk is not allowed.'

First post has been updated with a version that works with the new beta 4 (it will not be able to refresh online feeds for the first beta 4 and just won't do anything at the server end dispite telling you its refreshing the feed)

It now thanks, although its 293KB and the limit is 250KB (which my zipped up version just fitted in) so I still can't upload it :(
The future release that includes support to find serviio automatically will be bigger still so I imagine it will get upto ~500KB.

Re: Android Console

I've just tried it on my emulator and I've found it very pleasant and responsive (even on the laggy emulator!).
Like others, I dislike the flashy yellow, but the overall interface is well designed.
Concerning feature, do you confirm you've not developed (yet) the PUT and POST requests?
Cause I've haven't managed to update anything.

Try it in a 1280x800 tablet emulator if you think phone res ones are laggy :)
They are half there, but i've turned the front end to them off for now for updating devices, folders and sources.
In this release they exist for setting transcoding settings, and there is a bug that means you have to open the transcoding settings once, press cancel and then open them again before you can use them (but i've just worked out whats wrong so will fix that tonight).
They also exist for sending command requests (stop/start, refresh library, refresh online sources) which do work without any problems.

This release is to get some very intial feedback to make sure I'm heading in the right direction, which is exactly what you have done so thank you.

Ok, time for the colour picker then. Something more the blue/black/grey of the forums? Or something completely un-serviio themed?

Re: Android Console

I'd say pick your own colours. Even white background would do. If you need the logo in a different format let me know. Obviously you don't have to include Serviio's logo in your product's name, just the yellow square would be nice somewhere (even if only in the 'about' box)

OK thanks, can you post/pm me a highres version of the square serviio icon (with no background ideally) as I've had to blow it up for hdpi screens.

Re: Android Console

Im very very very very impressed!! :D

Running on Ice Cream Sandwich (4.0.2 AOSP ICS ROM for HTC HD2), Serviio stable 0.6 running on QNAP linux server (not the latest beta)
Connecting to Serviio: Working, no issues encountered, recognised im running 0.6
Starting and stopping server: Working
Force Refresh: Working, likeing the "files added on last refresh"
Devices: Showing properly, although i would prefer the Profile Name or Device name instead of IP Address :)
Shared Folder: Shows up everything.
Online Sources: Shows my feeds. Refresh says null as this is an old version of serviio

Amazing job, going to test later on beta 4 later :ugeek:
Will also test it on my amazing Samsung Galaxy S2
Sony Bravia 2010 52NX803 - Sony PS3 - Xbox 360
Serviio running on QNAP NAS 639 Pro - 1.6 Intel Dual Core - 2GB RAM and QNAP NAS 121 - 2Ghz ARM Marvell - 1GB RAM

Thanks.

Yes if forgot to put the check if running 0.6 to not give the option to refresh.

What do you have as the title for your online soruces? You should have the url, whereas on 0.6.1 you get the title as you can name them.

Re devices, I'll look to make it an option in a later release as to what is show as the title then. Device name would probably be better over profile name.

Re: Android Console

I've fixed transcoding settings and having the option to refresh online sources when you shouldn't.
I've also switch to the device name for the title instead of IP address. I'm now working on being able to add online sources.

Now the important bit. I've tried out a few colours and what would be really helpful is if some artistic person could make some suggestions. Use something like this site http://colorschemedesigner.com/#3L31Tw0w0w0w0 and post some links with a nice mix of colours.

Re: Android Console

About the Android icon. Ive always used my own custom icon below when i use serviio, looks better on my Bravia and PS3 as the icon appears in a square box, its just a cropped cleaned up from the original icon found in the serviio.jar file.
Image

Thought i'll see what iPhone style app icon design looks like and this is what i got, feel free to use it from http://www.xmantium.com/serviio/:

Re: Android Console

Updated first post for second beta.
Changes
Fixed having to open, close then reopen transcoding settings for them to update
The force refresh button for online sources is now only shown when your sever supports it
Patched title indivator code to stop halo effect around current title in some cases
Display device name as the title rather than IP address
Changed colour to dark blue and updated some icons/text to match
Added support for adding, editing and deleting shared folders
Added support for adding, editing, enabling, disabling and deleting online sources

The next release after the holidays will focus on capturing and doing something helpful with the return codes from the server.

@Xmantium thanks, once I get the colour scheme sorted then I'll fix the icons.

Install over it (if it fails then something is wrong and I want to know about it)
That was working in the previous one provided you had a beta 4 server.

Re: Android Console

Liking the blue theme! Installed fine over previous version, my previous IP settings was saved

Its difficult to tell to know if the feeds have been refreshed, unless you have a feed thats constantly changing which i dont
Is there a way to remove the "(ID #) when it confirms its refreshing the feed
Im sure it does what it says on the tin :D i get no errors

I think i would be best to have edit when you hold down the feed, similiar what you did with disable and delete.
Its easy to press when trying to reach to refresh (i dont have fat fingers! )
This keeps the interface cleaner, as most users(me personally) wont need to edit the feed once its saved

I'll remove the (ID #) bit, it was mainly useful when i was testing.
You will not get any errors because I'm not checking for it at the moment. I will in the next release.
The only reasons for it to not work are you are running the wrong beta version of serviio, you have no internet connection or you delete a feed using the console and then ask to refresh it from the app before the app has the new data.
If you want to confirm its working you can turn on detailed logging for online sources
  Code:
<category name="org.serviio.library.online">
      <priority value="DEBUG"/>
</category>

I'll add an edit option to the menu along with refresh.
I can make the clickable area for the refresh icon bigger if that would help?
On the future tablet version clicking on it will display the edit page on the right hand side, so I will keep editing as the default action for short clicking.

Is it worth having the cancel buttons next to the save buttons considing you can just use the system back button?

Re: Android Console

Best to leave the cancel button for some users, i always use the back button

Here are the changes i would make going through each of the sections, ofcourse this is my personal preference.
My reason for the following is, once ive added all my shared and online sources, and im happy with them, the only reason i need easy access console is to refresh the folder or source or maybe add a new feed
Once i setted up Serviio on a machine, after 1 months activity, i would not have the need to change the sources of folder and other settings

-Devices
1. Remove the "(Profile ID#)", not needed
2. Would like to see when you press hold down on device, it gives the option to remove it
3. I would keep "New Devices" option as action/menu button feature. Ive never used this feature using the windows console.
This will make Devices bit tidy

-Shared folders
1. Remove "Options", to edit the shared folder user should press hold the item to be edited, can be easily pressed
2. Again, i would make "add new shared folder" as an action/menu button feature

-Online sources
1. I like the refresh button where it is, would definately like Edit, Delete and disable on the hold press option
2. Again, i would make "add new online source" as an action/menu button feature

-Settings
1. Love to see Presentation option there
