Serviio on Android

Hi,

Sorry if this is not the appropriate forum - I'm new here.

I was just wondering if it was possible to run serviio (the transcoding server) on Android (specifically, a tablet).
The point is:
- I have a NAS with all different kinds of media
- My media/video player is getting obsolete, and I can't really see the "perfect one" on the market right now.
- I have a DNLA capable TV (who's picky about formats so transcoding is a must), and a modern Android tablet that I keep at home.
- My home computer is getting obsolete and I don't really want to invest into it and I definitely don't want to buy a powerhouse that is needed for HD transcoding on the fly.

At least in theory, the tablet (with quad-core CPU and HW codec support) should be able to handle the transcoding (much better than the old Pentium).
Is it possible to run the Serviio Server on the 'droid ?
(I did try video playback on the tablet, and it works great, but hooking it up to the TV with a HDMI cable across the living room is not the solution I'm looking for).

I am not sure if anyone has tried to run Serviio on an android platform.

I did a quick search and found a couple of ways to run .jar files. But not sure if Serviio will run this way.

Get a miracast adapter ir chromecast for the tv. Cheaper better solution imo, nas to tablet then send to tv any format. Also I doubt even a high end arm chip is going to cut it at transcoding.

Another option if u really want to do this is install Linux on your arm device, dual boot perhaps.....complicated but can be done then install serviio on Linux on arm. I wrore the wiki for serviio on raspberry pi which is arm so can work.

Serviio won t use the hardware gpu as it uses ffmpeg which doesn't do that.......yet.

Miracast us cheap easy option.

This would be awesome to use the GPU as I was thinking of creating a Android NAS station with the 4.2.2 x86 installation. I just need it to keep running without going into a sleep state. And get it to do eth0 only.

You could plug something like a Rikomagic MK802IV into the TV and access your media content on the NAS over WiFi.

Cons: Still not running the Serviio server as may be your objective
Doesn't have capacity to play DVD/Blueray media

Pros: It is a full blown computing platform using your HDTV as the monitor
Has a USB port, plug your media storage device straight in to access files
Will run the ServiiGo app to stream content
Will run the ServiiDroid app to manage your server

There are cheap PC's (like for $120) on UBid, EBay and other sites from which to build more than adequate Serviio servers from. I use an older DELL with 3Ghz Intel P4, 3GB RAM and two external USB 2TB drives. Serves up my library quite nicely local to a pair of LG Blueray players, 3 PC's, an iPod Touch and two Android phones over WiFi. Can access movies, pictures and tracks remote when out on the road from my Android phone using ServiiGo.

Not associated with Rikomagic, Dell, Intel, UBid, EBay, LG, Serviio, ServiiGo, ServiiDroid
