The JVM could not be started.. (£5 for anyone who can help)

Hi,

I have been running serviio now for over a year without problems.

I ran a malware scanner recently that seems to detect some java download files as malicious so I allowed them to be deleted by the program.

Now when I try to start serviio I get this message:

The JVM could not be started. The maximum heap size (-Xmx) might be too large or an antivirus or firewall tool could block the execution.

I tried disabling my AV software but no joy.

Also completely removed all traces of JAVA with JavaRa (and manually checked)

Reinstalled 64 bit java then 32 bit to the latest version.

Still getting the same error.

Tried also reinstalling Serviio but nothing works. This message keeps coming up regardless.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Can you check your antivirus/malware program hasn't removed the files again on its own?

Can you post a screenshot of the error (to confirm its coming from Java, rather than Serviio). Also just to check, how much RAM do you have in total/free.

What's in your ServiioService.exe.vmoptions file (in Serviio/bin folder). Open with a text editor. Should contain -Xmx512m as a single line.
Does Serviio Console run? This is also a Java app. Do other Java apps run?

ServiioService.exe.vmoptions contains -Xmx512m as a single line.

All other Java applications run normally.

Since re-installing Java and Serviio I have not ran my malware scanner.

I've also tried running the service without AV on and I still get the error.

The error shows up if I try and launch the serviio program or start the service.

Sometimes it can take a minute or two before the error message shows up.

Here is a screenshot:

Re: The JVM could not be started.. (£5 for anyone who can he

Just in case it is actually a memory problem (although from the timing it probably isn't), try changing the -Xmx512m to -Xmx128m (note this isn't a long term solution, as Serviio needs more than 128MB of RAM), and please do confirm you have enough available.

Can you check the activity log of your malware scanner if its one that can run in the background, just to make sure it isn't helpfully deleting files for you.

Otherwise, do you have a system restore point from before that you could restore back to?

@zip what was the command to get some debug info out of the tool you use to create the exe wrapper around java?

Re: The JVM could not be started.. (£5 for anyone who can he

I have 8gb of memory on this machine, 1.88 is in use and 6.12 is available so its definatley not memory related.

I confirmed this also by changing the line -Xmx512m to -Xmx128m as you suggested.

Still getting the error message...

I haven't ran the malware scanner since re-installing java and serviio and it has no logs unfortunatley.

I have no more restore points that go back far enough due to the amount of times I reinstalled java.

Appreciate the help so far.

Re: The JVM could not be started.. (£5 for anyone who can he

Ok, well its almost certainly something wrong with java/being blocked.

What malware scanner is it?

Is it the console or the service (or both?)

Open command prompt,

  Code:

cd C:\Program Files\Serviio\bin

then run
  Code:
ServiioService.exe /create-i4j-log

and post the log it creates. Do the same for ServiioConsole.exe

You are not the only one with this exact problem, mine started ob or about 5/31/13 also...
Memory is not the problem.
The service will not start, and the same error pops up after trying to start the console.

Can you do want I requested in my last post then (run the service using the /create-i4j-log option).

Check for a valid jvm.dll file. Mine is located in C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\client, and is signed by Oracle, whereas your log above suggests it can't be found: Trying c:\program files\java\jre7\bin\client\jvm.dll (exists 0). Long shot though as other Java apps are working....

Did you try this: http://www.java.com/en/download/faq/uni ... olinfo.xml

Re: The JVM could not be started.. (£5 for anyone who can he

I had the exact same problem, started on May the 30th. I run SuperAntiSpyware, evidently something in the jvm.dll file suddenly tripped the Trojan heuristic. I went into the SaS program and checked the quarantine, sure enough C:\Program Files\Java\jre7\bin\server\jvm.dll was there. Restored the .dll and all is back to normal. I hadn't run a scan, but I did have real time protection active. Finally thought to check the quarantine after multiple Java and Serviio reinstalls :s

OK, I also run SAS, and I also found the dll in quarantine. I restored the file, no go. Uninstalled java, and serviio, rebooted, re-installed 32bit and 64bit java, and Serviio, and now the service starts, however, the console does not, I get: Serviioconsole has stopped working...

Re: The JVM could not be started.. (£5 for anyone who can he

hi to all:
i have the exact same problem as described above... run "superantispyware" detected a trojan ..etc. i had this nightmare since Thu 5/30 . after many tries of installing and uninstalling both "java" versions and "Serviio" cleaning registry with CCleaner got it going, it's been working ok but with some cut-offs , frozen frames, etc . I haven't shut down my PC and i'm afraid that when i do it will go back to having the same problem again. it happened once already on Friday got it going then shut down the PC and when i started it again "the Message" showed up! ... I'm out my wits here! please help! BTW : the memory on my PC it's enough to handle the service ( i think) 2.7G avail Windows 7 premium

Thank You! i hope this issue can be resolved soon

Re: The JVM could not be started.. (£5 for anyone who can he

Its going to be hard for anyone to solve this problem without the problem on their own machine ie. it's largely up to you. I think the issue has been narrowed down to the fact that jvm.dll has been removed by SaS (never used that product, but I'd be complaining to them and getting another virus/malware scanner...).

What I would try:
If possible restore the PC back to an earlier date (earlier than when the problem occurred). If not possible then:
  1. Uninstall Java and Serviio
  2. Clean your quarantine and any reference to jvm.dll in SaS
  3. Empty your recycle bin
  4. Restart in safe mode
  5. Delete C:\Program Files\Java and all its contents. Empty the recycle bin.
  6. Search your hard drive for any files call jvm.dll and delete them. Ensure you search all hidden folders (an option in search somewhere)
  7. Run regedit. Search for any keys containing jvm.dll and delete them. Delete the key HKLM\Software\Javasoft and HKCU\Software\Javasoft
  8. Close regedit and restart PC
  9. Turn off SaS.
  10. Reinstall Java and then Serviio.
  11. Run and confirm one way or the other
  12. Turn on SaS, and then run Serviio to confirm working
  13. Restart PC and then run Serviio to confirm working
  14. Fingers crossed - do a full scan with SaS (or your replacement)..... then run Serviio to confirm working
My experience with registry cleaners is they do more harm than good. I'd avoid them, and prefer to manually clean (as above).
If you are not comfortable editing the registry then don't do this (normal precautions apply - backup your registry etc etc before starting). Without the PC in front of me its impossible to know if this will work, nor could I test it step-by-step (obviously), so its all care and no responsibility I'm afraid.
