Slow file listings

Trying to get my file listings remotely takes forever, I look through the logs and it's saying "2013-07-07 01:42:15,579 DEBUG [VideoDeliveryEngine] Retrieving resource information for item 366" ... I have over 1000 videos in this file. After about 2 or 3 minutes of the little waiting icon, it turns to say "no videos found", even though the logs show that it was trying to get the data on all the videos.

if I turn off all thumbnail stuff, everything comes through (even the thumbnails), but I'm afraid this wont generate new thumbnails for future videos.

How can I get my file listings in a timely manner?

How are you trying to access the content, MediaBrowser, ServiiGo, some sort of VPN etc...?
