Serviio, PS3 and mkv - What's going on?

A bit of help required if you don't mind.

I'm a long term user of Serviio with my WD TV Live. It works flawlessly and allows me to stream my large collection of mkv files. So I thought I'd give it a whirl on my PS3 too and I was very pleased to see that again all my files were playable. I was also impressed that I didn't have to tick the 'Transcode' option. Impressed enough to go Pro even. But fast forward a week and now the files won't play on my PS3 and I do have to enable transcoding to get any joy. Even then not everything plays.

So any ideas? What would suddenly alter the functionality to this degree? And what info should I post on here to aid the diagnosis?

Thank you in advance.

I don't think anything has changed - the only thing I can think of is that you must have inadvertently had transcoding on when you first tested with your PS3.

The PS3 does not support MKV files natively, never has. These need to be transcoded (remuxed generally).

Re: Serviio, PS3 and mkv - What's going on?

Thanks for the reply.

It's the weirdest thing. I am certain transcoding was not enabled. In fact I know it wasn't because the WD TV doesn't need it as it plays just about anything out of the box. Until I tried Serviio with my PS3 I'd only used it for my WD TV Live. So confused!!

The thing that impressed me the most about Serviio was that prior to getting the WD TV I used to use our PS3 as the main media player and was aware of it's limitations re: mkv files, file sizes etc. Steam used to come out of my ears getting TVersity or PS3 Media Server to work reliably. I also used to have to fall back on mkv2vob. Serviio is/was a revelation!

Can anyone help?

Wait, the WDTV doesn't need transcoding?

As for the PS3, I'm pretty sure it does need it and I'm having some problems with it as well. I suspect it's a network thing, especially because I'm using wireless. How are your devices connected?

Certainly no transcoding is required for the WD TV Live. Great little device.

As far as my network is concerned, wired all the way.

Back to my original query, I just know the transcode option wasn't ticked but I guess Serviio must have been transcoding anyway. It's the only answer that sort of makes sense.
