Multiple screens like digital signage?
Hello, I am working on a large multiple (35) monitor and projection screen art installation. After 100's of hours of research for the most cost effective set up, I am now focusing on a digital set up with 2-4 powerful xeon or I7 workstations. Many of the videos will be older 480p and some 720p, so full 1080p is not really necessary and we want to reduce the loads on those cpus and gpus. This will all be in one room but I wish to manage the videos from the workstations or a host computer. I am leaning towards VMware Pcoip with Z series HP workstations through a wired POE Dell ethernet switch. The workstations would have dedicated Teradicci cards as well as the Apex 2800 cards to off load from the cpu sto the gpus. Possibly Nvidia Quadro or Grid cards as well if needed. There would be 35 HP t310 zero clients with the optimized Terra 2 Pcoip processors. Hp claims that 130 Mpps is possible with this set up (6 Mpps is considered good). I would think a media player's ability to transcode would only help. For managing the videos cheaply and effectively, I am now looking at Xibo for Linux digital signage software, Plex server for Linux, and now Serviio for Linux like the ClearOS. Ok, I have a bunch of questions .....
1) Can Serviio handle multiple video playback at the same time with adequate hardware? If so, is there any limit? Does anyone know if Plex can do the same? I do like Serviio's ability to handle live feeds. Could it handle feeds from IP security cameras?
2) Is there any management ability to schedule video and possibly times to be played to each screen or must it be handled at each screen or DLNA device, possibly with its own interface or perhaps outside cms software? Again, is Plex the same?
3) It looks like Servio can run with VMware - am I correct? anyone have any insight here- does it run well?
I'm no tech expert and trying to learn fast, so any shared experience, and knowledge is greatly appreciated. Thanks a bunch!
