Problem running serviio through a router but not via switch

Hi,

i'll try to explain better.

I have a nb and a Synology DS213J NAS wired to the router (Vodafone Revolution), and two other devices, a Yamaha RX-V473 and Samsung TV UE48H6240, connected via cable to a Gb switch 3COM.

If i leave connected my Synology DS213J to the router (Vodafone Revolution), i can see the server and play music and video on my GS3 (android) and the nb, but not on the TV (Serviio is not showed on the sources available on the tv).

If i move the NAS , instead, and connect it directly to the switch 3COM (so the TV, the NAS and the HIFI are connected to the same switch, not router), i can see the Serviio content on the TV!

Maybe there is something i'm missing...

Can you help me to troubleshoot the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Does that mean it works now?

Sounds like the port you used on the router was configured to not see the rest of the network. This is done sometimes to grant Internet access to someone without letting them see the network. It's also how a server can be visible on the Internet without requiring a separate connection.

Re: Problem running serviio through a router but not via swi

Thanks for your reply, but i checked the router and all ports are rightly configured.

Once i connect the NAS on the router i can see updates center for the nas itself.
Once i connect the smart TV on the same router, i can see the lan, the internet (youtube) but not the nas.
If i connect both to the switch, they can talk eachother, thing that not run on the router!

I'm stuck on that.

Re: Problem running serviio through a router but not via swi

That pretty much narrows it to the router. Somewhere there's a setting that lets devices connect and get to the Internet but not see other devices on the network.

Frankly, the simplest fix is to just use the switch for all internal network devices. The switch has no such routing issues, and will always let everything see everything. There won't be any speed penalty on your network doing this, unless your Internet speed is in excess of 100Mbps Ethernet. Most homes don't have speed that fast.

Don't plug anything into the router except for the switch, and plug everything else into the switch. In reality this is the way virtually any large network is configured. There's nothing to gain plugging directly into the router except not needing the switch. Since most routers only have 4-5 ports in them anyway, you may have to add a switch anyway for additional devices. Even though my router has 4 ports, I still have an 8 port gigabit switch beside it for my network.

Re: Problem running serviio through a router but not via swi

The fact is that while nas and tv are connected directly to the router, i can ping the tv and access to the web frontend of the nas, but still no way to access serviio (even through my GS3 Serviio, BubbleUPnP, MediaHoude or other client.

I also tried to connect another switch (TP-LINK TD-W8970) and both TV and NAS can see each other and tv load Serviio's library.

In the router there's no configuration that allow or deny devices see other devices on the lan...

Come on, let's solve this boring and unusual situation.

Re: Problem running serviio through a router but not via swi

I tried looking for a manual for the Vodafone Revolution, but the only web site I could find was in Italian, which I can't read. Translation of the web page isn't working, so I can't begin to guess what to look for. If there's any setting that mentions Multicast, make sure that's enabled. I believe you've already looked for any firewall setting per port, or anything else that may be filtering inter-network browsing.

Without something I can read about your router that digs into configuration details, I'm at a loss. My suggestion remains to just use a simple switch that all network devices attach to, as this appears to clear the issue.

Re: Problem running serviio through a router but not via swi

The problem, and related solution, seems to be founded here (for IT guys)

http://lab.vodafone.it/forum/viewtopic.php?t=47237

In other words, let the VSR run ONLY AS MODEM and let another router/switch manage all the network traffic.

I really hope Vodafone take care of this (but i think it'll never be done!) and send a new fw update to all VSR.

Hope this will help who, as me, was in trouble as me.

I wanna thank everybody who was involved (or even better whoi involved :D) and tried to help me.

Regards,
Fabrizio
