Can't Access Samba Share

I am running Serviio 1.5.2 on Windows 10. I have a 1TB drive connected to the USB port on my WDTVLive and I want to add these video files to Serviio to share to my other DLNA TV. I understand that the WDTVLive shares these attached drives as Samba Shares.

I've read around the forum on this issue but at this stage I'm stumped.

I am running the Serviio service under my User which has admin privileges. The permissions on the WDTVLive drive seem fine with 'Full Control' for 'Everyone'.

Although the drive is a mapped drive on my Windows PC the entry for it in Serviio is in UNC format.

The log file shows
"[RepositoriesStatus] Repository '\\wdtvlive\movies' is not currently available. Deferring all operations for later."

I can access it and all of the files from within Windows no problem but Serviio never adds any to the library.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Re: Can't Access Samba Share

It is a permissions issue between Serviio and the remote share. My first suggestion would be to plug the USB drive into the Serviio computer and not the remote box. Doing it your way, the video has to be sent from the WDTVLive to the Serviio computer, then back again. Lots of network traffic. You would also eliminate any permissions issues if it were local to the computer.

So, it you must keep it this way, you have to check everything. Are you certain that the Serviio service is running as your User Name? Serviio installs itself to use Local Service, which has no network privileges. If you are certain you have it set to your user name, the there's something incorrect in the remote drive. Since I don't know how WDTV sets up its sharing, I can't offer any suggestions on what to check. Remember that the permissions must be set on the remote box. If you connect to the share with your computer and set its permissions through Windows Explorer, those permissions don't carry over to the WDTV box.

Re: Can't Access Samba Share

Thanks very much for the response.

I'm certain the Serviio service is running under my id.

The reason for the particular set-up was really for convenience since the WDTVLive is connected to the most frequently used TV. I understand the overhead in network traffic but I have GIG-E network so I wasn't too concerned.

I suspect it is related to the manner in which Windows attempts to provide network authentication information to the Samba share - but thats just a suspicion.

In any event I abandoned the drive being connected to the WDTVLive and instead hung it off the USB port on my DGND3700 router. Set up the scan folders in Serviio and its off and running. Happy Days!

Thanks again.

Good job. Whatever it takes to work! :D

I completely agree it is something to do with Windows network authentication. Sometimes it's just not worth the fight.
