movie freezes

I have this happen often, the picture will play then start hesitating, and sometimes it just freezes.

is there anything I can do to fix this

Insufficient information. What type of file (container and codecs) and what player? I am unfamiliar with the versions of Mac computers, so can't speak about its capabilities. But if you are trying to play something that needs heavy duty transcoding, that might be an issue.
