APPLE TV - REMOTE LOCATION

Hi there. My apologies in advance if this question has been addressed already; I looked everywhere and could not find it.

I was wondering if there is a way to connect an Apple TV to the Serviio program at my home from a remote location. I am able to use the Serviigo App on my android devices and Windows PC's (via Mediabrowser) which works great from remote locations, but I can't seem to get my Apple TV to connect. I also have a Microsoft VPN Server set up at home so if there's a way to use that service to make it work on an Apple TV, I'm all ears as well.

Thanks in advance for your time!

Re: APPLE TV - REMOTE LOCATION

The only way an Apple device will see Serviio is a) it has to be on the same network and b) the Apple device has to have a DLNA aware player. For the player, VLC works nicely. But the network is the tricky part. Since I doubt there's any VPN client available for an Apple device that will connect to a Windows VPN server, the VPN would have to be between the two separate networks. This is tricky, and requires a significant knowledge of networking. The two networks have to have a different IP address range, and either the router at the far end has to support connecting to the Windows VPN server, or each Windows computer has to VPN into the server by itself.

I've done it in the past in my role of IT administrator for a medical center, using the second option. But it was something that required my constant attention, and when we moved offices we instead used our TELCON provider to make a dedicated private connection between the two offices. That was what it took for reliability, as well as improved performance.
