Are multiple instances of serviio on 1 server possible ?

Is it possible to run 2 or more instances of serviio, on Linux in this case, so that individual users (family memebers) can configure and maintain their own media on a single home server and have those instances appear as separate media servers to a DLNA controller ?

I infer the underlying protocols must allow for this, as Windows 7 seems to offer separate DLNA 'shares/servers' if multiple users log into a single W7 PC.

Thanks,

Phil.

Not really, serviio is designed for there to only be one server running and therefor doesn't have any options to control which ports it uses. It has an option for binding to a specific interface, but this is doesn't effect the port used for configuring it. If you could find a linux tool to force one server to only be able to bind to eth0 and another server to bind to eth1 then it might work, provided you have two network cards. Alternatively, run the second server in a VM and bridge the VM's network card to your physical one. Virtual box is a good choice.

Anyway, it is possiable, but it won't just work and isn't supported/designed to work that way. If you try, do post back though with the solution that you found the best. I doubt zip would consider changing this because only a small % of users would benifit from it.

However, future releases will have profiles which allow certain folders to only be seen on certain devices, intially just normal and restricted content. Once that has been fully implemented, it may sort out your problem. Although it won't go as far as maintaining seperate last played records for tv shows.

Any update on this? It would be great to create separate media library folders and assign permissions or passwords to them so that these come up at the device level (i.e at the TV). That way we can have kids content and parent content.

Cheers.

You can now assign access rights to devices (either full or limited) using the Pro version of Serviio. http://www.serviio.org/buy-pro/10-uncat ... tion-rules

Not quite the same thing, but you could run a different DLNA server on the same computer. I currently run Plex in addition to Serviio on the same computer. While I far prefer Serviio, Plex is the only way I can stream to my Roku boxes. I also have a few Blu-Ray rips that I just can't seem to get to play over Serviio, but will play on the Roku using Plex.

Also, for media players that have a Plex app, you have a user interface as nice (or nicer) than Netflix or Amazon. That said, Serviio is still my main go to DLNA server. Its media load times far surpass the others I've tried, and it will send Dolby TrueHD as bitstream audio to my Sony boxes.
