[SOLVED] Random disconnect

I haven't been using Serviio for very long, but have been playing with servers and other streaming for many years.
I have a WHS (2k3) running Serviio 0.6.2, directly connected to a wired gb switch (24-port with 48 gbps passthrough).
Watching using a Samsung TV, connected to the same switch (via patchpanel and wallplates).

Serviio was running fine for a while, but about a week or so ago (not sure exactly when) I started having random disconnections.
I can't find anything in the windows events on the server, no other logs are reporting anything wrong. All PCs are still connected to the network shares on the same server, which is one reason why I'm guessing there's something to do with Serviio.

I emptied the log, restarted the service, and after a few min started a movie. Stopped after approx 40 min or so.
I've been watching a lot the last few days, and sometimes it stops after a few min, sometimes I can see a full lenght movie or 2 without problems.

Are you able to provide me with any suggestions from the attached log? Disconnects approx 19:31.
IPs 82 = TV, 66 = Server

Re: Random disconnect

based on this line

  Code:
2012-03-20 19:31:54,046 DEBUG [WebServer] I/O error: Connection reset by peer: socket write error

Th TV closes the connection. That might be because of the data it receives is not to its liking (ie dodgy file, encoding type, etc), but you could confirm this by playing the same file again and it should stop at the same time. Other reasons might be network traffic / lost packets, usually caused by dodgy routers.

Re: Random disconnect

2nd test log attached. This time, the log was cut so the start is not included.
Same file, but stopped after only approx 13 min this time.
As you can tell, the line "I/O error: Connection reset by peer: socket write error" is repeated over and over again but still playing and then suddenly stops.
As writing this, I'm testing playing the same file using my XBOX 360, and get the same error. (Still playing, will se for how long)

However, is this the same as "I/O error: Connection reset"? I attached a log from when I haven't been playing any files at all on any machines (sleeping or away working) and as you can see this is repeated a lot. Keep in mind, the server is online all the time when this happens, all other server shares are working fine.

Regarding the network. The devices are connected to a Trendnet TEG-240WS switch. See attached statistics. No Rx/Tx errors. All local network load is put on the switch, and the internet gateway / router connected to port 3 is only handling DHCP and internet data.

The Server NIC: Realtek PCIe GBE Driver 5.792.1208.2011

So, just to start somewhere. I guess all errors are bad, right? What would be the cause of the I/O errors when not playing anything? Where should I start to look for answers regarding this? Even if I have a huge media collection, should I try to reinstall serviio completely or do you have any other suggestions I should try first?

Re: Random disconnect

the 'error' may happen and it might not actually mean anything bad, depends on the situation.
I guess your problem will be related to the specific of your network setup.

Re: Random disconnect

I think I have found what was causing the issues, and it seems to have been as you guessed.
Sharing my results in case it helps anyone else.

The main reason the TV kept getting disconnected from the windows home server running Serviio was due to my switch having IGMP Snooping enabled. Turning this feature off helped.
Not sure why this only affects Serviio and not other UPnP DNLA services (such as the one built in to WHS or PS3 MS), but at least I found what was causing it.

After this, I only had some random disconnections from the online radio streams but I still had the TV connected to the server, and I think I have found the reason. I'm one of the participants in the samknows.com project. After disconnecting that box, I have now had a stable connection. I'll discuss this more with the samknows team to see if they can find out why the system is not working as it should.

Re: [SOLVED] Random disconnect

I have the exact same problem, it has always happened, but in the last versions it seems to be becoming more frequent.

I also have lots of "DEBUG [WebServer] I/O error: Connection reset by peer: socket write error" messages in the log, but it doesn't seem to affect in any way the play of files. Some videos play just fine for the whole lenght (more than 2 hours), others just 20 minutes lenght stop randomly every 3-4 minutes. It never stops in the same place, and sometimes I replay videos and they don't stop at all...

I already checked and double checked all settings in my router, disabled windows firewall, and even used other softwares (like WMP) for streaming and never had any problems with them. Just Serviio does that. I really like serviio, but this problem really makes me mad sometimes.

Re: [SOLVED] Random disconnect

I added some more debug logging in the next version, hopefully we can sort it out during the beta testing (give it a go once it's out)

Re: [SOLVED] Random disconnect

Hi. I have been using Seviio Media Server Version .5 for almost a year already. Everything went well with my Samsung SmartTV, Samsung Bluray 3d player, iphone 3gs and laptop. But when I downloaded the newest version 1.0.1 everything went wrong. Upon connecting to all share, it usually says that cannot connect to the device. I cant access my shared folder. Tried uninstalling and reinstalling the old version but same problem occurs. Sometimes it would connect but most of the time it wont connect. I am running windows xp on my desktop server. TV and Bluray is wired with LAN. Iphone and laptop is on wifi. What should I do to restore the working condition?

Re: [SOLVED] Random disconnect

Petr, i can inform you that since we closed this thread I still haven't had any problems.
The problem I had when I started this thread was mainly something to do with IGMP Snooping in my network setup.
I don't know enough about the protocols to understand why this would affect serviio and not other streaming servers, but that was the problem in my case. If it's possible to check things like that, I suppose that could be a good thing to include in the logs.

Can you start a new thread and attach your serviio.log file. With this thread saying [Solved] it might get overlooked.
