The Xbox will only play two channel audio in MP4. The only exception is in WMV files with WMAPRO multichannel audio. The bummer is that you can't real-time encode an MP4 file. If you could, or if the Xbox could play MPEGTS we could downmix the audio on the fly. But we can't. The 360 is so nearly a viable media player, but not quite

I see now. I wasn't aware of the MP4 thing with encoding, i just thought Serviio would downmix to a stereo track. Not a biggie, there are plenty of tools out there to fix the files. Thanks muchly guys!

Sorry to necro this thread, but I wanted to add a bit of detail for future noobs like myself on how to make MP4 files work when they won't play on the XBox 360 but they play just fine on the PC. At least, this is what just worked for me.

1. Open the MP4 file in Handbrake.
2. Verify the destination file name is what/where you want.
3. Click the Audio tab and select "AAC (ffmpeg)" or "MP3 (lame)" and downmix the audio to "Stereo".
4. Enqueue and process the file, and test on the PC.
5. Move the file back to the Video folder that Serviio monitors, then open Serviio Console and update the library.
6. Test the file on the XBox 360.

I'd note also that both files I just had that would not work, when viewed under "Properties" in Windows, showed that they already had a Stereo-2 channel audio track, but they refused to play on the XBox 360 until I did this. I don't know all the combinations and bifurcations of audio codecs, and the nice thing about Serviio is that generally I don't have to care, but every once in a while I get a file that won't play, and at least for the two MP4 files I tested today, this made them work.
