files on USB disk spins down

Hi
I have a small server running serviio, but because of storage squeeze I added an external USB disc to this. I have some movies on this. Yesterday I started serviio through my pana GT30 and found everything fine. 10 mins later my kids wanted to watch one of the movies, and did the same, but now all the movies on the external where not there. I checked the disk, and no light in it. Any thoughts???

I unplugged it, but the serviio had to scan them all again, and it takes a long time with 50 files.

TIA

Are you running Windows? You can disable this behavior in Energy Management.

Once it does the initial scan use the console to turn off updating for the drive. That way if the drive is unplugged or spins down the movies remain.

Re: files on USB disk spins down

thanks for the input.

worked well with unchecking the updates of currently shared files.

rg spin down - yes I can turn of in windows, but I kind of like the idea of spin down, if disk is not used, however I need some way to way it up from serviio - I cannot be the only one with this problem/challenge?

No, you are not the only one and the way to stop the files from being remove from serviio's database, it is to unchecking the updates of currently shared files. Serviio has no way of telling if the drive is a SSD, USB or a basic harddrive. another benefit for doing this is less system load, since serviio does not check the drive for new files regularly.

Re: files on USB disk spins down

yeah, got that - and was what I mind with my second sentence.

My issue is disk sleeping to save energy - why can't serviio wake it up?

It should wake it up when you start watching a movie? I am not sure why it will not wake it up for the scan, but for most usb drives the files will be removed from the serviio database when the usb drive sleeps.
