Computer is unusable when streaming HD movies

Hi,

i am unable to use my computer when somebody else is streaming a movie in 1080p from my computer with serviio. Im i alone to experience that ? I've checked my resouces but CPU is not really used and RAM still has 50% available. As soon as i stop streaming, my computer becomes quick again. I have an i7 950 with 6gb of ram and a GTX 460 1gb. Any ideas ?

It sounds like your hard disk performance is being affected by the streaming. Have you tried streaming off a flash or external USB drive to see if that makes a difference?

Re: Computer is unusable when streaming HD movies

That is why I use a dedicated PC for my streaming. If you have or can find an older castoff for little to nothing you might try that. I've even used an ancient laptop as a test, and it worked ok.

That said, I did build my server with streaming in mind, with a quad core CPU and 8 gig of ram. I'm also running Windows Server 2003, which takes some overhead as well. If I wasn't so lazy I'd instead use a Linux distro without running XWindows to keep overhead even lower.

Also, when you are checking your resources (didn't say your OS, but I'm guessing Windows of some flavor) make sure you've checked the box that says to show processes from all users. There might be something running heavily as a background service (like Serviio does) that doesn't show by default.

Re: Computer is unusable when streaming HD movies

What type of HD films, format + size ?

If you are running Windows 7, open the Resource Monitor ( Start -> search, Resmon -> Enter )

Now monitor the activity before, during and after streaming a HD film, look for any unusual activity or memory/disk/network hogging processes.

Re: Computer is unusable when streaming HD movies

Something else wrong there. I can stream Blu-Ray rips with no compression and that's on a first gen core2duo on a machine with 4GB.
