Transcoding DTS to Dolby Digital for Sony Bravia

Hi,

Ive just got a new Sony Bravia TV and have been trying to get it up and running with Serviio. Im 95% of the way there, the only problem i have is with files that have a DTS soundtrack. I'm trying to connect the TV to my receiver using the optical out on the back of the telly and this seems to work fine with Dolby Digital, just not with DTS (I seem to get just a standard stereo track). I've read that this is a common issue, and would like to get the transcoding to work so that i get the best quality audio to my receiver.

I've tried using the Sony Bravia 2013 profile and this doesnt seem to make any difference.

What do i need to add to this profile to get the transcoding to work? Anything else i need to configure in serviio?

Thanks

Mark

I'm not quite sure how this would work. The TV would probably refuse to play the file if it has DTS audio, since it's not a natively supported format. You may need to have Serviio decoded the DTS to a multichannel LPCM bitstream. However, you can only get two channels down an S/PDIF interface uncompressed because its bandwidth is actually pretty low. It surprised me when I discovered this. HDMI doesn't have this limit.

Re: Transcoding DTS to Dolby Digital for Sony Bravia

Most TV optical out jacks will only send 2 channel stereo or pass the DD bitstream. None to my knowledge will pass DTS. It should be fairly simple to add a matches line that looks for the DTS audio stream and tell Serviio to transcode the audio to AC3.

I'm out of town, so can't look at my profiles file, or I could make a suggestion for a transcoding line. Since I don't have a Sony TV (just BD players) I don't have first hand knowledge of what your TV supports natively. Also, what format (container) are your video files in? MKV, MP4, something else? My Sony BD players seem to play just about any format, but I do have problems with HD audio at times.

The Bravia profile already transcodes DTS to AC3 so no modifications are needed. I guess what we're saying is there is no way to passthough DTS, and PCM isn't an option because those optical links can only cope with two channels on uncompressed PCM.
