Image Transcoding on LG 50 PK590 ZE

It seems like I can view JPEG files okay, but if I try to view GIF files, things don't quite work properly.

I've attached a serviio.log file for when I performed the following on the TV:

  1. Started the image browser in a folder with 6 JPEGs.
  2. Selected one of the JPEGs to view full screen.
  3. Exited full screen, i.e. went back to browsing the folder.
  4. Navigated to another folder with 3 GIFs.
  5. Selected one of the GIFs to view full screen.
  6. Exited full screen, i.e. went back to browsing the folder.

Looking in the serviio.log file it seems that resulted in the TV doing the following:

  1. Downloading JPEG_SMs for each, in order to show them as thumbnails.
  2. Downloading JPEG_LRG for full screen viewing.
  3. Redownloading JPEG_SMs for each, in order to show them as thumbnails.
  4. Downloading JPEG_LRGs for each, in order to show them as thumbnails.
  5. Nothing being downloaded, and just some kind of generic error image being shown, i.e. not the GIF that I selected for full screen viewing.
  6. Redownloading JPEG_LRGs for each, in order to show them as thumbnails.

I used the Intel UPnP tools on my PC (set to use the LG TV / Player profile) to see what resources were shown in the image properties, and noticed that for the JPEGs three resources are available, i.e. JPEG_SM, JPEG_MED and JPEG_LRG, but for the GIFs only one resource is available, i.e. JPEG_LRG. This led me to wonder whether the issue might disappear if three resources were available for GIFs too, given the TV was behaving differently when only JPEG_LRG was available.

Note: Looking in the serviio.log file, there are some number format exceptions thrown early on in the process, but they seem unrelated to the issue with viewing GIFs, and didn't seem to cause any noticeable problems on the TV.

The above was all done with the LG TV / Player profile shipped with Serviio 1.2.1. I did look at that profile to see whether I needed to add some Image transcoding elements, as I initially assumed that GIF transcoding wasn't enabled, and that was why GIFs didn't work on the TV, but after doing the above testing I could see that GIFs were being transcoded to JPEGs, so modifying the profile didn't appear to be necessary. (I was a bit confused by what the Image transcoding elements are telling Serviio to do though, as they appear to work a bit differently to the Video transcoding elements, and the documentation didn't really make it clear for me.)

Anyway, I was hoping someone might be able to offer some incite into how to get the GIFs to view full screen; If I need to provide any more info to help work out what's going on, please let me know.

HI, I think there is a bug that the GIF is not served as original, only the transcoded JPG version is served. It should still work (but the TV is having problem reading he transcoded JPG for some reason), but I'll try to fix this for future.

Re: Image Transcoding on LG 50 PK590 ZE

Thanks for taking a look at this for me.

Looking in the TV's user manual, it only supports JPEG images, so transcoding presumably needed to take place anyway:

PHOTO (*.JPEG) supporting file

Baseline : 64 x 64 to 15360 x 8640
Progressive : 64 x 64 to 1920 x 1440

You can play JPEG files only.
Non-supported files are displayed in the form of predefined icon.

Incidentally, it also only supports MP3 music, so the current LG TV / Player profile might benefit from some tweaking:

MUSIC (*.MP3) supporting file

Bit rate 32 to 320

Sampling rate MPEG1 Layer3 : 32 kHz, 44.1 kHz, 48 kHz
Sampling rate MPEG2 Layer3 : 16 kHz, 22.05 kHz, 24 kHz

Just in case anyone is looking to track any associated changes in Serviio, I'm guessing that this issue was logged in Bitbucket as #689.
