Serviio not transcoding stream "on the fly"? large! tmp file

Hi I'm just getting started with Serviio.

My video collection is in ffmpeg-converted h264.mkvformat.

I want to on-the-fly transcode & stream the collection to a Panasonic DMP-BDT220 BD player.

I've installed Serviio, selected the Panasonic BD profile, pointed it at my store, and launched it.

The Panasonic's renderer client sees the store, and I can select a movie to play.

Here's where I'm (already) stuck :-/

With both MediaTomb & UMS, the start of playback of the transcode (vcodec == h264, acodec == copy) was almost immediate, and both Video & Audio, converted to mpegts on the fly, were perfect. Lots of OTHER stuff was broken, which is why I found my way to Serviio finally.

With Serviio, however, it takes ~ 30-45 seconds for the movie to start playing.

On the screen I see the first few seconds of Video, then it just gets stuck there ... Video doesn't progress any further. Audio, otoh, keeps playing -- and SOUNDS ok.

While setting up for debug logging, I noticed that Serviio appeared to be creating a LARGE transcoding tmp file

  Code:
   ls -al /tmp/Serviio/
      total 944M
      drwxrwxrwt 62 root    root    4.0K Aug 22 20:00 ../
      drwxr-xr-x  2 serviio serviio 4.0K Aug 22 20:04 ./
      -rw-r--r--  1 serviio serviio 944M Aug 22 20:06 transcoding-temp-35-panasonicBDT220-ORIGINAL.stf

Since my goal is to do this on-the-fly, I was surprised to see the file created and populated.

I suspect this may be behind the problem I'm having with stuck-video, etc. Not really sure this soon in the game, though.

So, 1st question -- how do I make sure that Serviio is ONLY transcoding on the fly -- and not writing/storing any tmp files. Or at least NOTHING this large.

Serviio is transcoding on-the-fly. "On-the-fly" means it will transcode in real time, or near real time, when required - it doesn't mean that it won't create a temporary file.

Any on-the-fly transcoding system will store the transcoded video, either as a temporary file as Serviio has done, or temporarily to a RAM file or buffer (ie. in memory). There are advantages and disadvantages to either approach, but speed isn't normally an issue either way. The temporary files are just that - they are wiped when Serviio is restarted, or when you start a new transcode job from the same device.

Putting the large file to one side you have an issue with it being delayed on startup and then not playing. When my video's transcode, they generally start on my TV near instantaneously. The Panasonic BDT220 profile is quite a simple one - it remuxes anything with h264 or mpeg2 video (converting audio to AC3 if not already) and transcodes all other video types. Your h264 mkvformat should simply be re-muxed to a m2ts container, which should be quick, and should result in a temporary file about the same size as the original. Note that play should start on your TV as soon as the file starts transcoding (ie. it doesn't wait until the transcode job is finished)... this is not what you are experiencing though....

Can you please post some MediaInfo details for your file. Have you also tried playing the file without transcoding (either turn transcoding off, or select the Generic profile), probably wont work, but always worth a try.

Ok, then no worries about that. I guess I was just never aware of MediaTomb or UMS doing it.

So likely a problem here.

The Panasonic BDT220 profile is quite a simple one

At the moment, I'm using the newer version from [url]http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=5983&start=20#p69986
[/url]

No difference to the original one. I.e., same issues.

Have you also tried playing the file without transcoding (either turn transcoding off, or select the Generic profile), probably wont work, but always worth a try.

Yes, and it doesn't work. I get the "Cannot Play" error @ the player.

Re: Serviio not transcoding stream "on the fly"? large! tmp

I captured the debug log while launching a video.

Again, here, the video launches, plays a couple of frames, stops, repeats this 4-5 times -- kind of a stutter -- then just halts and stick there. The audio keeps playing.

Re: Serviio not transcoding stream "on the fly"? large! tmp

Finally got this straightened out -- I needed to limit bandwidth manually to stop the freezing on launch, 4000K does the trick here. My WiFi link should be able to handle much more than that, but oh well. It's good enough to get the video playing.

Now on to the other remaining issues ...
