Scanning files on network drive

I have installed Serviio on 2 PCs; one Win 7 & one XP. all works fine and streams to Panasonic Viera TV.

However I am unable to get the server to scan video files on an NAS drive.

The library shows on the Viera tools media server section but it is empty.

When a force refresh is performed no files are scanned. The path is entered correctly i.e. \\server\folder\folder but this still has no effect.

Help please

Make sure the user that runs Serviio server/service has got access to the shared folders. If you are on Windows, check that the user running the Windows service has got access. To run the service as a different user go to Services (from the Windows Control Panel → Administrative Tools or typing "Services.msc" in the Run command on Start menu), select Serviio, right-click -> Properties, Log On tab, enter user's details and restart the service.

To access a NAS device the exact same set of credentials must be created on the NAS device. The Windows credentials must be a local user and not a domain user. The user must have "Run As Service" rights.

The remote path must be entered as a UNC path in the Serviio Console (e.g. \\server\folder)), mapped drive letters will not work since user running the Serviio service is not aware of your mapped drives.

Re: Scanning files on network drive

I have been really struggling to get this to work. I think its due to me not understanding windows 7 networking properly. Anyone care to help out a network retard like me?

I have 2 windows 7 PCs networked via homegroup. A few folders shared between the two. I cannot get Serviio to scan network drives.

I tried changing the services login to a user account on my networked PC as described, but serviio would no longer start until I changed the service back to default.

I do not have a clue how to proceed and need it spelled out.

Sorry to be a pain :(

Re: Scanning files on network drive

Same problem here:

WIn7 Computer
+
Synology DS110j (NAS)
+
Yamaha Receiver

Serviio is running on the WIN 7

I can see the folder NETMUSIC on Harddisk E: on the WIN 7 and I have access to the files in it from the Yamaha - works well

I can see the Folder Artist which is on the NAS, but I have no access

even if I put in like

\\DISKSTATION\Artist
or like

\\ 192.168.###.###\Artist

I have admin rights and I have access from the Win 7 and every other Computers within the network to the NAS

So what is going wrong here

(Sorry for my english I from Germany)

Re: Scanning files on network drive

The first step in figuring out why it won't scan network folders is to check the log. The log file is found in the 'log' sub-folder of your Serviio install.
If it says something along the lines of unable to scan or add files due to access rights, then the problem is that the service cannot access the files.
I get this issue with every upgrade, you need to change the service to logon as an Administrator (as stated already).
Next important thing, is to make sure the exact same credentials are used as a user (with proper permissions) on the NAS or network share.

Re: Scanning files on network drive

I had the same problem.

Serviio could not scan network drives on my NAS.
I have sorted the problem.

If you still have problems.

Just create a new user account on your NAS.
And also create a new user account on the machine your running Serviio on, but the name of the User and Password must be exactly the same as on your NAS.

Use that same account using "services.msc" for Serviio server.

Problem fixed, it scanned them and it's fully working with a good profile selected.

You also must make sure the pathnames are correct, for example in your local share in Serviio, "\\NASNV\Sharename".

And all the folders and files have the correct permissions.

Re: Scanning files on network drive

Yes, it is a permissions issue. The easiest fix is to change the user that Serviio runs as, as Replica just mentioned. See the FAQ page for more detailed information. :)
