[SOLVED: Caused by SSD] Bravia picture freeze

Hi there,

I've been experiencing this effect since quite a few Serviio versions and decided to dig a bit deeper now: Some of my mkv/avc/ac3 files start to play, and after somewhere between 30 and 60 seconds the picture gets jerky and finally freezes. I press pause and try to resume, no reaction. If I stop the video and start it right again from the list, it resumes from the point where it had freezed before and continues to play flawlessly right to the end.

I'm not quite sure where to poke first. The files in question should be fine bandwithwise and they don't get transcoded by Serviio either.

I'm currently in the process of re-encoding almost my entire collection, and my basic x264 encoding settings are preset veryslow, film tuning, profile high@L3.1, crf20. I found those settings a good compromise between used space, quality I might lose too much and time I'd spend if I'd fiddle around with all settings for every individual video.

Perhaps there are non-standard x264 settings that are more Bravia compatible?

Does anybody else share my experience with the freezing picture at all?

Its probably because the transcoding process at this point (30s - 60s) is too slow compare to the video playing rate (fps) and buffer in Sony Bravia device become empty...and freezed and become unresponsive to pause/play function.

But when you stop and restart video, the transcoding process was reached and data are always ready for the Sony bravia rendering process.

Suggest:
First could you enabled detailed logging, and check that this problematic file was transcoded, check the ffmpeg command line used.
Then try locally in a windows terminal the same command line with "-report" option added to the command line, then post the ffmpeg report log file (we will check the transcoding fps rate).

Thanks a lot for pointing me to something to start with, I will collect more info this weekend and report back.

So far I found that the effect seems to be unrelated to the server's load. And videos which freeze will freeze each and every time when played from the start and each of them freezes at its own distinct point. A video that freezes 36 seconds from the start will always freeze at 36 seconds.

I THINK those videos freeze after xx MB of stream delivered [too fast], which supports your Bravia buffer theory.

And I got the impression that videos which have higher bitrates at their very beginning (panning cityscapes, helicopter flights or the like) tend to be those which freeze, even if the maximum bitrate does not exceed the Bravia's capabilities. Videos that start with several calm studio logos tend to be more likely to pass their first minute without interruption.

Ok, here we go, here are my lengthy results. I have to admit I mistyped Bravia 2011 as 2010 when starting the thread. Sorry...

According to Bitrate Viewer my randomly chosen freezing video has an average bitrate of 3607kbps with a peak of 11094 kbps. As I mentioned before, I'm currently in the process of re-encoding almost my entire collection with a different x264 preset (veryslow, because CPU is faster now than it was in former days), and thought high@L3.1 would be even less demanding for the renderer than the old high@L4.1. To my surprise, the freezes still happen with L3.1.

if someone is knowledgeable enough to look through my logfiles above, he might be able to answer this easy additional questions:

- Can we assume that keeping within the limits of profile high@L3.1 will restrict video bandwith enough to safely feed complex scenes to Bravias?

- I've read somewhere that it is wise to keep RefFrames below 6 to please Bravias. If this is true and we use x264's --preset veryslow (which by default gives a much higher number of RefFrames) and we restrict RefFrames with --ref 4 as the only custom option, will this contradict other x264 options set by the --preset veryslow, rendering the encoding settings inconsistent? The command line options might look like so: --preset veryslow --tune film --profile high --level 31 --ref 5

I've spent quite a bit of time looking AVC specifications, and do not fully understand yet if I do have to stay within high@L3.1 specs to please the Bravias or if it's enough to restrict bandwidth and RefFrames (--vbv-bufsize=17500 --vbv-maxrate=17500 --ref 5 ) while encoding with high@L4.1 otherwise.

I'm not even sure if there is any "otherwise" anyway, i.e. if a high@L4.1 file that is encoded with bandwidth and RefFrames restrictions already is high@L3.1 and could as well be flagged as such. Having a second look at the Mediainfo output a few posts above: The file already is within high@L3.1 specs, and still it freezes.

Did you find any hints in my logs that I'm actually having a video bandwidth issue here? The Bravias becoming unresponsive to pause/play commands looks pretty much like it.

I re-encoded my chosen testfile in the flavours high@L3.1 and main@L3.1, each in versions with 5 and 4 RefFrames, and all four resulting files freeze, each at its own distinctive point. Still can't figure out which encoding parameter makes the files so hard to digest for Bravias.

What is your encoder tool ? Could you post the complete command line used ?

I use Vidcoder, which is an alternative frontend for Handbrake and unfortunately does not show what the actual x264 command line looks like. According to the logfile, the following x264 parameters are passed on to Handbrake:

I think I'll give up on this.

I did countless encodes of my testfiles now and got a few mkvs that play without freezing, but when I look into MediaInfo, the Encoding settings of those file which play and those which don't are identical to the last digit. The safest bet seems to be high@L3.1 with ref=5, but I've seen files with those settings freeze while ref=9 or high@L4.1 files (from another source) play.

Damn! It's the server. What a load of time wasted with encodes and re-encodes, testing parameters and stuff...

I've set up a second Serviio instance today on my Windows workstation and added the server's video directories to the new library as paths. All those videos that have a distinctive point within their first minute where they used to freeze play flawlessly when streamed to the Bravias from the new Serviio.

When streaming such a file from its own Serviio installation, some hard- or software component on the server apparently goes into saturation within the first minute. CPU is fine at 5-6%, because the files are just remuxed. The harddisk, SATA port, driver etc. are the very same components that deliver the same files to the other Serviio instance running on the workstation. And still, there's a difference.

Short version: I switched the transcoding temp path from SSD to oldschool hdd, and the problem went away. Old files, new files, you name it, everything smooth.

I swapped my OCZ Agility 3 series SSD for an Intel 330 today, and this one doesn't seem to have any problems with holding Serviio's tempdir.

Could be pretty tricky to find out what went wrong all the time. I'll check the OCZ drive for faults in another computer tomorrow, but if it's ok, I don't think it's worth digging deeper. Among other things, I've read that my nForce 630a mainboard chipset and its S-ATA drivers are not doing too well with SSDs in general. I'll see what I can find out.

Ok, I dug a bit deeper, for those interested.

The OCZ Agility 3 SSD and the Intel 330 use the same internal controller (STF 2281) and the same storage technology (MLC NAND), so basically there should be no major difference in how well the motherboard and the drivers handle them.

I did a firmware upgrade 2.15 > 2.25 to the OCZ, did a secure erase and put it back in the server using a new data cable. I restored the partitions with a little space (about 5%) unpartitioned. I've read that this overprovisioning is needed for SSDs that are heavily written to. Not sure if this is relevant for Windows Server 2003 at all or if OCZ has already overprovisioned, but it didn't do any harm to give up 5% capacity.

It put Serviio's transcoding tempdir back in the SSD, no more problems so far.

Just FYI I have my Serviio temp folder on a SSD (relatively old Verbatim 64gb) as it helped improve FF / RW for me massively to Bravia 2011 tv. You got unlucky with your i/o issue I'd suggest
