Serviio Pro v.1.3.1 breaks mkv on PS3?

I am a happy Serviio Pro user, and have upgraded our server to the latest version. It streams from our iMac to our PS3 (which is set to the Playstation profile). However, I just noticed that mkv files that used to stream fine now give an error (the PS3 claims that "this file type is not supported"). I have restarted the PS3 and the Serviio server and the problem persists - even on files that I have streamed in the past. Other files still stream fine, so it seems localized to mkvs.

Is this a known issue? How can I help figure out what is going on?

Thanks for the reply. Here is the DEBUG log (I think only the relevant lines, but I'm not sure. The log files sure get huge with media information!)

I tried to play the first two files in the directory (E01-02, and E03). Both gave the "This data type is not supported" error on the PS3. I actually tested this on two different PS3s to make sure the problem wasn't on that end.

This is probably because on previous version, audio has been transcoded to AC3 with 384 kb/s and with latest serviio version the ac3 audio is remuxed with the original 448 kb/s bitrate. I don't know if the PS3 support this audio bitrate.

Upgraded from 1.3.0, and was running 1.2.1 before that. Each upgrade I have backup the library folder within Serviio.app, deleted Serviio.app and Serviio-Console.app, installed the new version, and then replaced the blank library folder with my old one.

Unfortunately, reverting to 1.2.1 now gives the same problem (we have watched these files many times, so I'm really surprised about this).

Similarly, I just tried a clean install of 1.3.1 (so reapplying my license file and starting with a blank library; again, with the PS3 using the Playstation 3 profile), and I still get the "unsupported data" issue. To the OP, are you 100% sure this particular file played before? It just remuxes the h264 stream, so if it's not properly encoded, it'd make sense. But if it played before, I'm lost.

Yes, 100% sure. And I just tried streaming a few other mkv files I have lying around (some movies), and the success rate there was about 50/50. There is definitely something glitching when transcoding mkvs. Other filetypes still stream successfully (although all of the ones I tested probably didn't need transcoding)...

Could it have something to do with the version of java installed on the machine or anything like that? The computer doing the streaming/transcoding is an Intel iMac with 2.77 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4 GB memory, running 10.8.4. It has Java 7 (update 25) installed.

Are you on wifi or wired? Maybe there is connectivity issue.

Both PS3s are wired via ethernet to the router (a Time Capsule), which is also connected to the iMac via ethernet.

Oh no, I was really hoping that this was solvable! If it is the file (maybe it got corrupted somehow... but it still plays fine on the iMac itself via VLC), is there a transcoding setting I can change to make it more aggressive or something like that? I have "produce the best video quality" checked, but also "downmix to stereo". Or maybe I should try other device profiles, despite the output being sent to a PS3?

I don't know if this helps but I just went through and the season directory has 31 episodes, and oddly enough about 3 or 4 of them stream fine, while the rest give the "data type is not supported" error. They are all scene releases in the same format (720p.HDTV.x264), and some of the working files and the non-working files even come from the same release group.

You could try to remux the file to mp4 using another tool and then try to play the file natively. If it still fails, then it's the video stream encoding, causing the problem.

Interesting. I took the directory and ran all the files through MKV2VOB (which actually produced mp4s). No transcoding was needed, just remuxing (so it only took the app a few seconds on each file) - and these stream perfectly.

So it still seems like something is awry in Serviio's on-the-fly transcoding, but I'm not sure what. In MKV2VOB I do have the "convert DTS to AC3" checked - could that have something to do with the issue? (I guess it shouldn't since the files are AC3 already...)

Could you try in a local windows terminal the command line, then copy and add the output file to the serviio libary and check playback :
