Sony Bravia play MP4 files

My Sony Bravia TV is unable to play MP4 files, even though the forum suggests that it should be able to.
I am using the profile Sony Bravia TV (US) 2012 do I need to edit the profile to enable playback??
The same file plays without issue in another room via my Sony Bluray which uses profile Sony BDP-Sx90(2012)

here are the details of one of the files:

Re: Sony Bravia play MP4 files

Don't know what is the problem with your EX645 model and this mp4 file...
Something with resolution not standard (720x404) ?

You can try to create a custom profile for this particular file, by adding following just before the last </Profiles> element of .serviio/config/profiles.xml
save, restart serviio service or reboot PC, then manually select this new profile on console.
  Code:
   <Profile id="custom" name="Sony Bravia TV with h264" extendsProfileId="sony2012">
      <OnlineTranscoding>
         <Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video" forceVTranscoding="true" maxVBitrate="17000" targetACodec="ac3" aBitrate="384" forceInheritance="true">
            <Matches container="mp4" vCodec="h264" />
         </Video>
      </OnlineTranscoding>
   </Profile>

Re: Sony Bravia play MP4 files

Thank you for the suggestion. I updated the xml and rebooted PC. Then switched to the new profile.

I still cannot play 6 of the 7 files in the folder (all mp4) but one file does play.
Here are the details of the one file that I can play (on the Sony Bravia) in the hope it gives a clue to what is causing the problem.

Can't see any revelent difference between these two files...
But I'm suprised that mp4 file cannot play with the new custom profile.
Could enable detailed logging, and check the log to find the ffmpeg command line used to transcode these files ?

Re: Sony Bravia play MP4 files

You are great! I really appreciate your assistance.

Just in case others are having similar problems, the profile update fixed the .MP4 issue but broke my .avi files :(

So I added the new profile as this:

  Code:
<Profile id="custom" name="Sony Bravia TV with mp4/h264" extendsProfileId="sony2012">
      <Transcoding>
         <Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video" forceVTranscoding="true" maxVBitrate="17000" targetACodec="ac3" aBitrate="384">
            <Matches container="mp4" vCodec="h264" />
         </Video>
     <!-- 2012 models for US (without avi/divx)
             - Still images: JPEG, MPO
             - Music: MP3, linear PCM, WMA, MP4
             - Video: AVCHD, MPEG2, MPEG1, MP4 (AVC), MP4 (MPEG4), WMV -->
         <!-- Transcode DivX, AVI -->
         <Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video" maxVBitrate="17000" targetACodec="ac3" aBitrate="384" forceInheritance="true">
            <Matches container="avi" vCodec="mpeg4" />
            <Matches container="avi" vCodec="msmpeg4" />
            <Matches container="avi" vCodec="mjpeg" />
         </Video>
      </Transcoding>
   </Profile>

Now have both .avi and .mp4 files palying happily on my Sony Bravia :D
Thank you so much!!!

OK, nice, but it's a workaround...
Could you provide MediaInfo tool result for these two mp4 file (worked and failed)?

Seems similar to this : viewtopic.php?f=7&t=10692

Re: Sony Bravia play MP4 files

Hi Illico,

Sorry I never replied previously as I didn't see your post.

I came back to see what I did to the profile in the past as I just installed Serviio 1.4 and find myself back in the same postion!
I will make my same old amendments but thought I would upload the MediaInfo information anyway as it may help others too.

Re: Sony Bravia play MP4 files

I was having the same problem using Serviio 1.4 and a Sony Bravia TV. Some MP4s would play, others would not play at all, and at least one would 'crash' the TV so the only way to recover was to 'reboot' the TV by unplugging its power cord. Using the suggested profile I can now view all the MP4s.

However, some of my MP4s also contain subtitles (closed captions) which I used to be able to switch on or off using the CC button on the TV's remote control. With the new custom profile I cannot get the Close Captions at all. Is there any way to add this capability to the Custom profile?

Thanks in advance.

Close Captions could not be extracted from mp4 files (does from MKV) with serviio/ffmpeg : http://www.serviio.org/index.php?option ... icle&id=33

Could you provide MediaInfo tool result (in text format) of your mp4 file ?

Re: Sony Bravia play MP4 files

I have attached the MediaInfo output of an MP4. As you can see it has two audio streams (english soundtrack and director's commentary) and subtitles. I have three TV sets: A Sony Bravia, a Samsung and a Vizio, all purchased within the last 6 months. Here are the results:

Sony TV using the custom 'Sony Bravia TV with mp4/h264' profile: Will show video with english soundtrack. Cannot switch to second soundtrack or enable subtitles. Works the same with all my MP4s.
Sony TV using 'Sony Bravia TV (2012) - US' profile: Will show video with english soundtrack, and allows turning subtitles on and off. Cannot switch to second soundtrack, and will hang on some other MP4s, requiring power cycling.
Samsung TV using 'Samsung TV/player (E/F-series)' profile: Will show video with english soundtrack. Allows switching back and forth between the two soundtracks, but will not display subtitles on any MP4.
Vizio TV using 'Vizio TV' profile: Will show video with english soundtrack. Cannot switch to the second soundtrack or enable the subtitles in any of my MP4s.

Any suggestions are much appreciated.
