Subtitles not playing on Sharp TV

Hello

Recently I got a new Sharp aquos tv as gift (must add it's most likely a budget one, as it's not running android tv).

I'm having problems running SRT files. They are not showing on TV through DLNA, but they do work through USB. This makes me think it's a profile problem.
Default profile detected by Serviio is the generic dlna profile. I shall add the Sharp Aquos profile gives an error.
All my subtitles were working perfect on my 10 year old samsung smart tv running the samsung E/F series profile.

Things I've tried and checked:

-Ran subtitles thourgh SRTwiz , didnt help.
-Subtitles are correctly named.
-Saved subtitles as UTF8.
-Tried loads of different profiles with no avail.
-Embedded subtitles also dont work (muxed with mkvtoolnix).

What does work is using burned-in subtitles.. But I'm really not a fan so I really hope there's a different solution.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Re: Subtitles not playing on Sharp TV

What is most likely happening is that USB and DLNA support differs on the TV. That actually happens quite often, in that something will work from a USB drive but not via DLNA. Sometimes it's the codec, sometimes the container, and sometimes it's the captions. My Sharp TV uses the Roku OS, so not a direct comparison.

I assume you tried "Enable extraction of text-based subtitles embedded in video files"? Beyond that, if you're on Windows, try the native Windows Media Streaming function with the mkv files embedded with subtitles. See if they play.

I was thinking of trying to get a roku, but I live in Belgium so that's out of the question. I'm also not certain it would even fix the issue.

The TV runs its own OS.. Its very basic with very limited functionality.

Yeah tried the embedded subs, sadly doesn't work.
I'll give WMS a go, thanks.

Re: Subtitles not playing on Sharp TV

Windows media streaming services are extremely limited. It does a bit of transcoding, but you have zero control over what it does and doesn't do. I tried it (admittedly many years ago) and it was generally worthless for most of my library. Once I found Serviio I've never used it again, and in fact have it disabled on both of my media serving computers.

Re: Subtitles not playing on Sharp TV

Try converting them to ASS maybe that will play? I have chromecast and using generic profile and they work srt ass or embedded. Idk what srtwiz is but I assume that checks formatting?

And what is the best way to convert to .ASS? Do I need Aegisub for this? I prefer to use only certified software. And not only that. To take the same jewelry and gemstones, there is a whole gemstone certification responsible for the quality and generally takes into account most of the features. So does the software.

The display of captions is solely up to the player, so the TV determines what captions are displayed. And for TVs, they generally only display text based captions. If your media consists of ripped DVDs and Blu Rays, they use captions that are image based, not text. And your TV will never display them.

However, SRT files are text based, so in theory I would expect them to work. But not knowing what model Sharp TV you have, I have no idea what caption support it has.

Re: Subtitles not playing on Sharp TV

Dear Dan,

I have a Sharp Aquos TV, but despite as I selected Sharp Aquos in the menu, to get it working I must untick Transcoding in delivery menu, otherwise, i get a black screen with obviously a message error but I don't have the time to see it, it just blink.
If I tick to burn subtitle in the image, It can works with some video, doing that, I suppose it finally transcode anyway
So I suppose not all Aquos TV are working the same way.

I also try to put the transcoding buffer in a ramdisk instead of /tmp on hardisk, supposing that may accelerate transcoding process, but no change doing that.

Maybe I can ask to Sharp but I dont know where?

Thanks and regards,

Raphaël

Re: Subtitles not playing on Sharp TV

Aquos is a name they apply to numerous different models. If you can find the model number, I might be able to find a manual online that lists the supported file formats.

Re: Subtitles not playing on Sharp TV

Found a manual online, but it was of no help. It does not list any of the supported media types. The only spec I could find is that the TV support H.264 and H.265, the latter being a bit of a surprise for a TV that isn't 4K. But I can find nothing online that lists the media and codecs supported. That list generally includes the types of captions supported. They simply don't make that info available.
