Re: synology and transcoding

I think the NAS doesn't show the number of FFmpeg instances correctly, it starts just 1 for the first movie. Then, if you watch the same movie on another player, at the same time, it should just reuse the transcoded file from the first ffmpeg job. If it doesn't it might be a bug - in that case enable detailed log and try to reproduce it, then post the log here.

You would only have multiple (2) instances of FFmpeg if you run 2 different transcoded movies with 2 different players at the same time.

Re: synology and transcoding

Have been away for a longer time. Will try to provide you with logs soon.

As for now I only have problems with playing 1080 files - CPU goes to 80-95% but the movie doesn't transcode on the fly - meaing it shutters. I am still looking for a solution.

I have noticed some other minor bugs: if the title of the movie or the directory, in which you have the movie file, contains characters like ',' (comma), '+' (plus) or "[]" (square bracket) the serviio will give errors (it will not play the movie saying that there is on access to the server).

For example sometimes using "," (comma) is usefull when the movie title is let say "The Avengers" and you want to make it sort from A to Z and change the directory title to "Avengers, The". In this situation servio will fail to play the movie inside the directory, but it will see the file in this directory. Still using Sony HX850.

These failing movies, are they with burned subtitles on? Can you provide detailed log of this happening?

Re: synology and transcoding

You mean these 1080 or these with commas in the file name?

Will provide log in few days.

There is new version of ffmpeg (1.2) since 15/03 - doeas Servio 1.2.1 has it inside?

Do you think ffmpeg 1.2 will bring better performance?

Re: synology and transcoding

Hey, sorry for bumping this thread but I got some questions regarding Synology and Serviio and was wondering if you could help.

Synology now got the 214/414 Play devices witch got an Hardware Encoder for x264 Videos, so I was wondering if Serviio could use this to speed up encoding ?
Do you believe 1080p/24 would be supported in real time ?
Also I saw that Synology lacks of DTS Transcoding, would Serviio do the it ?

Patters would be the guy to answer this - I believe he was looking into this, but I think he found something that prevented it working correctly.

Re: synology and transcoding

Hi - yes it does work though it was a little unstable. I have something built, but it won't hardware encode into an FLV container. This is fine for most DLNA devices, but it does mean that you can't use Serviio's Media Browser, since that uses a Flash Player. In my limited testing it did seem to work nicely for IOS devices.

I was holding back because I was in contact with Synology's developer support, but they haven't been able to fix the issue and had been delayed significantly by their own OS refresh project (Synology DSM 5.1). Their latest position was that I should wait until the DSM 5.1 sources have been released and that we would use those as a baseline for experimentation. I had hoped to release this by now but I am finding it very difficult to dedicate some time to it.

Re: synology and transcoding

Thanks for your Input.

This is a bummer, as I would need the transcoding feature just for the MediaBrowser. For everything else I got a WDTVLive, so no transcoding needed.

Which Synology NAS would you suggest for 1080p transcoding then ? I understood that the DS1515+ would do 3 * 1080p fine. Quiet expensive thing, I I just need transcoding every now and then when I'm not at home :S
