how to stop serviio from transcoding files?

I've searched and i've read some of the threads, but I am still very much unclear on this.
is there a step by step instructions designed for 5 year olds on how to stop Serviio from transcoding MKV and MP4 files?
I like the server, but if I can't get it to stop, i'll have to move to an alternative platform and I really want to avoid that.

thank you

Re: how to stop serviio from transcoding files?

There are two ways. One is to use the Generic Profile, which transcodes nothing. Of course, if you still need transcoding for some files you'll have to change it back to the proper profile for your player. The other way is to turn off Transcoding in the console. I'm not a home right now, so can't remember exactly where it is located on the console. But there is a checkbox to turn transcoding on and off.

Now if your player requires transcoding for some but not all files, you may need to build your own profile. It's a little techy, but if you start with a working profile and remove some of the transcoding lines you can eventually end up with a tailor-made solution. Remember to save a copy of your final masterpiece so you can put it back in the profiles file after any Serviio updates (which creates a new profiles file).

Hey Act!

thank you so much for your reply! I'm making an effort of keeping all my files mp4 and MKV; they're served to Roku 3, so I should be good with no transcoding.

I just found the box you referenced to; removed it will see how that works.
thank you so much!

Yes, the Roku Media Player supports MP4 and MKV containers, but the video and audio codecs are just as important. While your MP4 files are likely all MP4/AVC video, the MKV container can have almost anything. The Roku only supports AVC/H.264/MP4 video. Many of my MKV files contain MPEG2 video, which the Roku does not support.
