File shortcuts to multimedia files

I'm trying to create collections of specific multimedia contents (Xmas movies, specifically) by creating shortcuts to the multimedia files, and collecting the shortcuts in a directory, which I have shared with Serviio. I get a "No multimedia content" on the WDTV Live, and an empty folder with VLC on my iPhone.

Is this a Serviio problem (i.e. it does not resolve shortcuts) or a problem with the players?
