Toshiba sound but not video

I live in Japan. My TV is a Toshiba 2006 model - 42Z2000.
It has limited input, happiy receiving only MPEG video and AC3 sound, and only an MPEG_PS stream.

Before you ask.... I have tried running Device Spy and I cannot get to see my TV at all, nor any SINK remotely like it.
So I went to the DLNA certification site, and the best I can do is derive the profile name from there
The profile name in the certificate says MPEG_PS_NTSC - so no PAL there.

From that I deduced it would only accept PS, not TS, so changing the Toshiba Profile to mpeg allowed me to finally see material served to the TV.

Now using Serviio, I can see the Folders and files through the TV.
Serviio will serve, without transcoding, any MPG or MPEG (albeit at a non-adjustable and overscanning aspect ratio).
However, it will only give me audio, and no video, when streaming AVI, MP4, M4V files, of either PAL or NTSC origin.

I have included four samples of the FFmpeg outputs - NTSC and PAL versions of AVI and an MP4 file.

I have gone through the forums and tried every version of people's suggested Toshiba profiles, and tried tinkering around.
But - I must be missing some basic step - nothiing is getting these to work.
Any suggestions gratefully received.

Suggest trying this update:

Re: Toshiba sound but not video

Thanks for that, Illico.
However, other than allowing me to now see mpegTS formmatted material, it was subtantially the same as the profile I was using.
You did, however, get me thinking about trying different bitrates, as you can see.
However - all to no effect with AVI, MP4 and Matroska giving me only audio.

Here is what I now have
  Code:
      <Profile id="14" name="Toshiba 42 Rezga" extendsProfileId="1">
         <!--  expected profile MPEG_PS_NTSC or MPEG_PS_PAL -->
              <MediaFormatProfiles>
         <MediaFormatProfile mime-type="video/mpeg">MPEG_PS_NTSC</MediaFormatProfile>
      </MediaFormatProfiles>
      <Transcoding>
         <Video targetContainer="mpeg" targetVCodec="mpeg2video" targetACodec="ac3" aBitrate="192" forceVTranscoding="true" maxVBitrate="8190" >
            <Matches container="mpegts" />
            <Matches container="asf" />
            <Matches container="avi" />
            <Matches container="flv" />
            <Matches container="wtv" />
            <Matches container="mp4" />
            <Matches container="matroska" />
         </Video>
      </Transcoding>
   </Profile>

It would appear that NOTHING gets transcoded - unless it is a forced mpegTS.
Looking at the four files I submitted earlier, can anyone discern what it might be about those files which stop them transcoding the video? The audio comes through fine.

Thanks

Re: Toshiba sound but not video

After profiles.xml modify, do you restart Serviio service?

Re: Toshiba sound but not video

Yes I do.
I completely close the console AND the server. I come out of the program entirely, and go back in by starting the Serviio Service, and then the Console. I ensure I have selected the correct Toshiba Profile and Saved it.

If we can step back a bit.... if the Toshiba Profile is based on inheritance, then all the "Generic" profiles are available to the Toshiba.
Since my model only accepts MPEG_PS_NTSC, does Serviio know to send only the MPEG_PS_NTSC and not some other media format profile?

If the problem is not in the transmission, then I guess it must be in the transcoding? Not sure what other parameters are available to put in there.

Thanks

Well, if Serviio/FFmpeg transcodes all media in MPEG, MPEG2VIDEO, AC3, serviio will provide multiple ressources with differente http-get (video with thumbnail,etc)
Ressource#1: http-get:*:video/mpeg:DLNA.ORG_PN=MPEG_PS_PAL;DLNA.ORG_OP=10;DLNA.ORG_CI=1;DLNA.ORG_FLAGS=01500000000000000000000000000000
Ressource#2: http-get:*:video/mpeg:DLNA.ORG_PN=MPEG_PS_NTSC;DLNA.ORG_OP=10;DLNA.ORG_CI=1;DLNA.ORG_FLAGS=01500000000000000000000000000000
Ressource#3: http-get:*:image/jpeg:DLNA.ORG_PN=JPEG_TN;DLNA.ORG_OP=00;DLNA.ORG_CI=1;DLNA.ORG_FLAGS=00D00000000000000000000000000000
You can see that with Intel Tool : AV Media Controller and your Toshiba modified profile selected on serviio console.

So your Toshiba probably select the good one (?!)
You can also check the detailed log file.

Re: Toshiba sound but not video

For this test to work, you have to give your local IP address (PC running AV MEdiaController) Toshiba profile as well.

Re: Toshiba sound but not video

Thanks for working on this with me. I don’t know all the ins and outs of what you are looking for but…

Having bound Serviio to my IP address, and using my Toshiba profile I found that the Intel AV Media Controller was giving me information about the following files.

AVI, Matroska and MP4 files have two resources: #1 is about the file, and #2 is about any jpeg image eg cover art.

MPEG files have three resources, just as you put above.

However, I am not sure if I am providing you with anything useful – is this information about the file PRE-transcoding, or after it is transcoded?? Anyway, here are their Resource readouts:

I also ran the DEBUG and provide the Serviio.log file as an attachment

This demonstration is simply to explain how serviio works...

ozpete999 wrote: I also ran the DEBUG and provide the Serviio.log file as an attachment

According to your serviio.log file:
*.avi, *.ts, *.mkv and *.m4v are all transcoding to mpegps with mpeg2video and AC3 audio with two MPEG_PS_PAL, MPEG_PS_NTSC ressources.
It seems that your TV get MPEG_PS_NTSC profile.

Re: Toshiba sound but not video

The TV sends Http/1.1 requests so Serviio sends the file back using chunked encoding. It's possible that the TV doesn't support this (it's quite old, maybe DLNA implementation is not best). If that is the case, you're out of luck as turning that on/off in Serviio is not supported.

I can see, however, that transcoding takes place, so your profile is ok. Can you play any file using this transcoding profile?

Re: Toshiba sound but not video

Thanks

OK - using the transcoding via the Toshiba profile that includes the line
<Matches container="mpegts" />
I get audio AND VIDEO of an mpegts file.
You can see that one in the serviio log I attached previously, the file called 'Modern Family Cast discuss hit showff.ts'

All the rest of the AVI, MP4, MATROSKA and M4V files fail to transmit video. But I DO get audio.

With all the files that are transcoded (audio only), I can start and pause, and I can skip forward or backwards 30 secs at a time.
I cannot FF or REW, however.

Serviio happily transmits NON-transcoded MPG and MPEG files - such as VOBs. With those I can FF and REW as well - and, of course, it does give me sound AND picture.

Thanks

Could you post "ffmpeg -i" of such VOB files?

Could you
- Transcode locally an avi to mpegps like this command line?
ffmpeg.exe -i C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Videos\country house rescue s02e01.avi -y -threads 1 -vcodec mpeg2video -sameq -r 25 -g 15 -copyts -acodec ac3 -ab 128k -ac 2 -map 0:0 -map 0:1 -sn -f vob C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Videos\TEST.ts
- Post here the ffmpeg log.
- Add this ouput file (TEST.ts) to the serviio library and check if video is always down.

The transcoded Test.ts file does NOT play video - only the audio.

Re: Toshiba sound but not video

OK, could you try transcoding locally and add to library this output result:
just add "-s 720x576" option
ffmpeg.exe -i C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Videos\country house rescue s02e01.avi -y -threads 1 -vcodec mpeg2video -sameq -r 25 -g 15 -s 720x576 -copyts -acodec ac3 -ab 128k -ac 2 -map 0:0 -map 0:1 -sn -f vob C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Videos\TEST.ts

Could you also post "ffmpeg -i" result of the output TEST.ts file?

EDIT: You could also make test by changing GOP number option: -g 12 and other number.

Re: Toshiba sound but not video

Yes yes yes !
Finally.... something on the screen - well done.

I took three files - the country house AVI file and the Mission Impossible AVI file, and the Atul Spice Kitchen MKV file - and transcoded them with your settings to a TS.

The results are
1) the Country House AVI file transcodes perfectly - plays well, correct aspect, FF, REW everything
2) the Atul Spice Kitchen MKV file transcodes perfectly - plays well, correct aspect, FF, REW everything
3) the Mission Impossible file is 90% perfect - plays well, FF, REW... but the aspect ratio is wrong. It is at 4:3, and the picture on the screen ends up being stretched horizontally.

But... I am very impressed. You have gotten me video from these files and that is fantastic.

So, as requested, here are the output from the FFmpeg -i request to the three TS files

For the Country House AVI file transcoded using these settings
ffmpeg.exe –I “C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Videos\country house rescue s02e01.avi” -y -threads 1 -vcodec mpeg2video -sameq -r 25 -g 15 -s 720x576 -copyts -acodec ac3 -ab 128k -ac 2 -map 0:0 -map 0:1 -sn -f vob “C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Videos\TEST_CH.ts

All files, when played back using MPEGPS, look and sound great - except for the aspect ratio on the Mission Impossible.
Now - should I put that code somehow into a profile to make it work everytime??

Thanks for your continued help.

Re: Toshiba sound but not video

Zip, Do you think (like forceStereo option) we could add profile option to force frame size and aspect ratio of output video on ffmpeg command options:
`-s size'
Set frame size. The format is `wxh' (ffserver default = 160x128, ffmpeg default = same as source).
`-aspect aspect'
Set aspect ratio (4:3, 16:9 or 1.3333, 1.7777).

For ozpete999 that could resolved his Toshiba SD format limitation.

Could you add "-aspect 16:9" to your previous command and check the final aspect ratio or "-aspect 4:3" don' know ?

Re: Toshiba sound but not video

Thanks for your help and suggestions.

I tried a number of things with the 720x576 aspect ratio. Nothing worked.

Then, scouring the TV manual, I came across some settings for 525p and i (480p and i)

It suggested that the AR was 720x480

So I entered those values and - voila - it works !!!!

Whether I put in 4:3 or 16:9 or nothing doesn't seem to affect the output. I provide the FFmpeg -i files below

A transcoding of the following (where -aspect 16:9 or -aspect 4:3 or no aspect ratio at all)
ffmpeg.exe -i “C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Videos\Mission Impossible S01E01 - PilotShort.avi” -y -threads 1 -vcodec mpeg2video -sameq -r 25 -g 15 -s 720x480 -aspect 4:3 -copyts -acodec ac3 -ab 128k -ac 2 -map 0:0 -map 0:1 -sn -f vob “C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\My Videos\TEST_MI_ASPECT.ts”
