Service not stsarting after update

Hi,
I updated Servio from 2.0 to 2.1.
After update, the service stopps right after starting.
The log show the following:

Re: Service not stsarting after update

Hopefully Bing Translate is getting it right. The errors say "Die angegebene Prozedur wurde nicht gefunden", which appears to be "The specified procedure could not be found". It seems to be a Java issue, although I'm not savvy enough to know exactly what the issue is. Looking at a log showing a successful startup, it appears to be failing when making a database check. Since it's a Java database, that would make sense.

I'd first suggest running the Serviio install again, just in case something didn't update correctly the first time. If that does't fix it, I would uninstall Serviio completely, reboot, and do a clean install. I know it could be a pain to configure everything again, but I am unaware of any other way to ensure a clean database. Perhaps Zip could offer some other ideas.

Thanks fpr your prompt response.

Meanwhile I reinstalled Servio again. The issue is still the same. I'm now trying to upgrade/check Java. Java seems to be the problem as a propper re-install was not succsessfull so far.

Re: Service not stsarting after update

Serviio installs its own version of Java, so that by itself shouldn't be an issue.

However, I just noticed that you are running what the log shows as Windows 2003 5.2. I believe that is Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2. Many people have reported issues running Serviio on a Windows server OS. It's great that it was working for you previously, but my guess is there's something in Serviio now that has issues with the server OS. Serviio was never developed or designed for the Windows server OS. Also, Microsoft has discontinued support for it as well, so no more bug or security fixes. My guess is we aren't going to be able to determine exactly where the problem is. None of us have a copy of that OS to test with.

Hi,
I just installed v2.1 and I've got a similar message (see below).
I'm using Windows XP. Am I to assume Serviio no longer works with XP?

Re: Service not stsarting after update

While Microsoft no longer supports XP, I don't think there's an issue running Serviio on it still. But you log indicates it isn't locating a specific library file:

C:\Program Files\Serviio\jre\bin\management.dll: The specified procedure could not be found

Now under XP I recall that Serviio installs to the C:\Program Files (x86) folder, although that might have only been on 64 bit versions. Double-check your Serviio installed location to confirm if you can find that file in that location.

Hi,
That directory and file do indeed exist.
C:\Program Files\Serviio\jre\bin\management.dll is present and correct.
Serviio installs to C:\Program Files\Serviio\ on my XP.

Do you test on XP anymore?
(Yes, I know it's old and unsupported by MS)
Should I go back to an older version?

Re: Service not stsarting after update

Well, I'm not the Serviio developer, so I won't speak for him. Myself, I haven't had a computer with XP in a very long time. Mostly because I wanted a 64 bit OS to support more than 4 GB of memory. I still have some XP install discs, but haven't any hardware I could install it on to test. But I'll dig around and see if I have something buried somewhere.

Re: Service not stsarting after update

I notice that in the Serviio log, it refers to "Java 1.8.0_242-BellSoft x86"
and the release notes say "updated Java to OpenJDK 1.8_242".

My system Java is halted at "Version 8 update 151 (build 1.8.0_151-b12)" since that was the last XP compatible version released.

Is it simply that the updated Java installed with Serviio v2.1 is now incompatible with XP ?

Re: Service not stsarting after update

Serviio uses its own embedded Java install, so it doesn't matter what version JRE is installed on the computer itself.

I'm trying to get a virtual machine set up to test Serviio under XP, but my Linux test box didn't play nicely yesterday. I'll keep plugging away at it today.

Re: Service not starting after update

OK, succeeded in getting Windows XP working on a virtual machine. Remember that this is a clean Windows XP Service Pack 2 install, and that it is impossible to update the OS any further via Windows Update. So my install might not be a completely valid comparison with yours.

I first installed Serviio 2.1. Install was successful, but Serviio will not start. It won't even start to the point that a log file is created. So I uninstalled that version and installed Serviio 1.10. This version installed and ran fine. I was able to add a library location, load media, view the media on a Roku TV, and play the media.

Since it was now working, I tried again, this time as an update to Serviio 2.1. Unfortunately, the results are the same. Complete failure to load. I believe one problem might be that FFMPEG (required for transcoding) doesn't seem to offer Windows 32 bit support any longer. It's very likely there are other files Serviio uses that might be 64 bit only as well.

I made one final attempt. I removed 2.1 and installed Serviio 2.0 as a clean install. This worked, and everything worked as expected. However, if you use User accounts, there's a bug in 2.0 that is fixed in 2.1. I would recommend remained with Serviio 1.10.1 as the newest version. Although I really suggest upgrading to at least Windows 7, so you can at least have a 64 bit operating system.

So, I would say that Serviio 2.0 is the latest version that works with Windows XP (32 bit version - maybe the 64 bit version will work). However, due to the bug with user accounts, I would recommend remaining in the Serviio 1.x versions.

Re: Serviio Service not stsarting after update to v2.1 on XP

Thanks for confirming that v2.0 is the last version that works on XP.
I'm not worried about user accounts, so I'll go back to that version.

I was wondering though ...
Since my install does not get any further than trying to run the localised java, would v2.1 work if the Serviio\jre\ folder was copied from v2.0 into a v2.1 install ?
As you've implied, there may be other components used that no longer work on XP though.

Re: Service not stsarting after update

No, I think it's more than the Java runtime. As I said, it wouldn't even create the log file. But I might try playing with that. Since I still have the VM built, it's not difficult to install/remove programs. It's far faster than I've ever seen XP on a physical computer. :D

OK, so I've tested my theory.
Here's what I did:
[] Installed v2.1 (to C:\Program Files\Serviio\ folder) and copied the C:\Program Files\Serviio folder to C:\Program Files\Serviio_v21
[] I then installed v2.0 (to C:\Program Files\Serviio\ folder)
Comparing the folders and files of the two versions, apart from the java \jre folder, the only real differences seem to be these five files
    C:\Program Files\Serviio\bin\ServiioService.exe.vmoptions
    C:\Program Files\Serviio\config\profiles.xml
    C:\Program Files\Serviio\console\ServiioConsole.exe
    C:\Program Files\Serviio\lib\serviio.jar
    C:\Program Files\Serviio\lib\serviio-mediabrowser-web.jar
[] I Stoped the Serviio service.
[] Copied those files from \Serviio_v21 (v2.1) folders to \Serviio (v2.0) folders
[] Start the Serviio service again

Now in the console it says "Serviio PRO v 2.1" and appears to be working on my radio.
However, opening the Media Browser, I can see the various sections but no mp3s when I drill down into them.
NOTE: I haven't restarted my PC during any of this so things could change after a restart.

Also with MediaBrowser, when you change versions you sometimes much clear your browser cache to ensure MB works correctly.

The MediaBrowser problem was fixed by following this advice - https://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=25528&start=40#p123693
i.e. adding the following line into the user.vmoptions file
  Code:
-Dserviio.cdsAnonymousAccess=true

Thanks.
