Subtitle size on tv very small

Hi all,

I have a problem with subtitles on my tv.
I first Googled this problem and searched this forum, but I could not find an answer.

I am using version 2.1 running on a Linux ClearOS box.
The subtitles are really small and I can't find a way to make them bigger (or normal sized for my tv).
I use .srt files that I manually downloaded.
When I watch videos on my phone (or a small window on my pc) the subtitle size is ok, but when I watch it on my tv (or full screen on my pc) , the subtitles are unreadable small.

Also when enabling subtitles from opensubtitles.org, I do not get the option to enter my uid & password like mentioned on the bottom of this page:
https://serviio.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=33

I also would like to mention that Serviio 2.1 never downloads subtitles ... even when they are available on opensubtitles.org.

Please advise,

J.

Re: Subtitle size on tv very small

To my knowledge subtitle size and display is under the control of your player/TV. I don't think there's anything that can be done from Serviio's side to change any of that.

The login to Subtitles.org was removed with version 2.0. I've never used the function so can't say if it's working or not. The developer is on holiday at the moment, so we'll have to wait until he returns to ask that question.

Re: Subtitle size on tv very small

Thanks atc98092 for your reply.

My pc and my media center (connected to my tv) both run Windows 10 and I connect to my Serviio files in a Firefox window.
Afaik there is no way to control the size of the subtitles from either Windows 10 or Firefox.

I don't have this problem with other players like Kodi or VLC on both my pc & tv.
If you or someone else knows how to solve this issue I would be glad to hear it.

Please advice,

J.

Kodi and VLC are both players, and they do control things like subtitle size. I use Kodi on my Shield devices as my main player for my Serviio content. I don't care for the VLC user interface, but they too have tremendous control over all things playback.

In Kodi you might need to enable the Expert settings to find the subtitle stuff, but I'm certain they are there. But still, Serviio can't do anything to alter the size of the captions displayed. That is completely under the control of the player.

Re: Subtitle size on tv very small

Thanks guys,

Maybe this picture makes it more clear (when watching in full screen the subtitles stay almost the same size as shown here ... just a little bit bigger):

VLC, Kodi & Firefox

I use Kodi myself, but the other people who look at my Serviio content over the Internet, only have browsers available.
They do not know much about computers, so a browser is complicated enough.
Is there another way too view the content of my Serviio share ... like with an app or something ... ?!?

Please advice,

J.

Re: Subtitle size on tv very small

I believe that ServiiGo allows playing content from beyond the firewall, but that's an Android only app. Other than that, MediaBrowser is the only way to view Serviio content from outside your home network. That's the only reason I also run Plex on my media server, as I can use my Roku player when I'm traveling and connected to the hotel wireless. But I never touch Plex from the home network, as Serviio provides what I want far better.

Re: Subtitle size on tv very small

Thanks atc98092,

I was unable to connect using ServiiGo, so if I have trouble with that, then the others will not even try it.
On an (Android) phone there is no issue with the subtitles, so this would not help (not all of them have Android phones anyway).

I also use Plex, but that is way too complicated for the other users.

Thanks anyway, but I think I will have to continue searching for an alternative solution to Serviio ... if there is one ...

Re: Subtitle size on tv very small

Idk if it distorts the movie but usually for text you can do ctrl + in firefox and make it bigger, worth a try.

Yeah, that will enlarge the entire screen, not just the captions. All browsers support that, Won't look good would be my guess.

I don't know why Plex would be more complicated that much of anything else. Yes, they need a user account, and if you don't want them using yours ( I wouldn't want them to) they would have to set up their own. But then you just share your server with their user account and it's done. They log into the Plex player at their end with their user account and presto, they see your media. I use that for my sister-in-law and it works great.

I haven't used ServiiGo for close to three years (haven't had an Android phone since then) so wasn't sure about what it can do. But I did think that it would work outside the firewall. Don't forget you have to enable certain ports in your router to allow ServiiGo to passthrough to the server. I don't know if it uses the same ports as MediaBrowser.

Re: Subtitle size on tv very small

Thanks atc98092 for your replies,

The <CTRL> & "+" works, but it distorts the menu completely (not the video).
For myself that's not a problem, because after every video I just press <CTRL> & "-" to restore it, but for an un-experienced computer users that's just too much.
For now I will keep using Serviio, but without subtitles. It has too many cool options that do work.

I will have to investigate Plex a bit more to see if I can make it work so even my friends will be able to use it.
According to this link ServiiGo only works with the Pro version of Serviio:

Re: Subtitle size on tv very small

Yes, that is true. ServiiGo requires Serviio Pro for access.
