Sony BDP-S370 and files from an iMac

I have just migrated from a Windows XP desktop to an iMac desktop. On the Windows machine, video files in .mov and .avi format could be streamed to a TV via a Sony BDP-S370. I have installed Serviio on the iMac to replicate what on the Windows machine was Windows Media Player (acting as a server). Music and photo files can be seen without problem but video seems to be a bit odd. The .mov files transferred from the Windows machine can be played but not any of the .avi ones. However, .mov files produced by the iMac's own software (eg. Photo Booth or Quicktime) cannot be played or even listed. An additional problem is that , although the folders on an external hard drive can be seen, there are apparently "no playable files" even though the folders contain exactly the same .mov files that are on the hard drive and which can be played. Any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Sony BDP-S370 and files from an iMac
Sorry if this is a dumb question but I am a newbie to Imac and to Serviio. In the link you provided, there is advice to check a file called "serviio.log" but I can't find a file of this name anywhere. Additionally, how do I "browse" serviio or serviio console apps?
Re: Sony BDP-S370 and files from an iMac
right click on the icon (Serviio.app) and Browse content

Re: Sony BDP-S370 and files from an iMac
Thanks for that advice. I have examined the log files, and .mov files created on the mac and which do not show up on the TV are listed as with the following text:
2011-04-14 23:59:11,166 WARN [VideoExtractionStrategy] Couldn't resolve H264 profile/level for file 'Movie Recording.mov' because Sequence parameter set header was not recognized.
.mov files transferred from a Windows PC seem to work fine on the Mac with Serviio. Is there a way to fix the issue with the Mac-created .mov files?

Re: Sony BDP-S370 and files from an iMac
I think that I have got everything working properly now with one exception - as long as files are in the Movies, Music or Pictures folders, they show up fine. However, even files that display properly in these folders, do not show if copied to other folders (eg. Public - Dropbox). Neither do any files held on an external drive, although this is listed in the "Library" tab of the Serviio console. Can this be fixed?

Re: Sony BDP-S370 and files from an iMac
I have read the link you provided and I have made a folder called "test" and placed in this some files which are seen and played when in the Pictures, Movies and Music folders. I have, as far as I can see, set the folder "test" to have exactly the same attributes as the other 3 folders. On the TV, the folder "test" appears but I get the message "there is no playable file" - the same thing happens with other folders which are not the three mentioned above (eg Public, Dropbox or the external drive). I would like to be able to play files on the external drive, in particular, as this allows me to free up space on the Mac hard drive. Is there any solution?
Re: Sony BDP-S370 and files from an iMac
Does serviio.log include adding the files from your test folder?

Re: Sony BDP-S370 and files from an iMac
No, the Serviio log has no mention of the folder "test" or, indeed, the external drive or the Public folder, although these folders do appear in the folders list on the TV screen (but without any playable files)
Re: Sony BDP-S370 and files from an iMac
I assume you added the 'test' folder as a shared folder, that's why it appears on the TV (as a root folder). It must be the access rights or path to the external drive folders that is missing.

Re: Sony BDP-S370 and files from an iMac
The folder "test" appears on the TV in the list of folders but it gets the message "there is no playable file" , even though it contains copies of the same files that play in the Music, Movies and Pictures folders. The folders for the External drive also show but with no playable files.
Re: Sony BDP-S370 and files from an iMac
I had already set permissions to be the same for all the files. However, I have now resolved the problem by removing Serviio and re-installing it. All my files can now be seen and played so many thanks for your help and for Serviio.
