strangely missing subtitles

I have serviio server v2.4 installed on both a Win10 box and a Win11 box. Both serviio servers point to the same network share. There are .SRT files on the network share for all videos.

When I use a DLNA client (Samsung TV) everything works fine when accessing the Win10 box. Subtitles are missing if I access the Win 11 box.

Both Win boxes are configured identically on the subtitle config page.

How should I look for the problem?

Re: strangely missing subtitles

I have two different Serviio machines as well. My primary was upgraded to Win 11 several months ago, and my test server I just updated two days ago (unsupported CPU but did the server trick to install). I just tried them both playing a known file with a matching SRT file, and in both cases they worked fine. All I can suggest is to ensure the Win 11 box has the same shared library mappings as the Win 10 box.

You could also check the Serviio log to see if there's any entry about a problem with the caption file. The log is stored at C:\Program Files\Serviio\log (assuming the default install location). The most current log file will have a name that ends with .log. Older files have a sequential number as the file name ending.

Re: strangely missing subtitles

Thank you for the response.

I have verified that both Windows machines are pointing at the identical network share. I don't see anything that looks like an SRT error in the serviio log.

I actually have a third serviio service installed on a Linux machine. That serviio server also works with subtitles. So Linux works, Win10 works, Win11 fails. I'm baffled.

I just tried adding a second network share to each serviio service. The contents of this second share are identical to the main share (it is my backup folder). I see exactly the same results: Win10 and Linux show subtitles, Win11 does not. I have verified on the serviio configuration page that all three servers have subtitles enabled. All three say try to automatically detect subtitle character encoding, and all three default to UTF-8.

So the problem has nothing to do with the content of the network share and is somehow specific to Win11.

Re: strangely missing subtitles

Thanks for the response. I can't explain it, so we'll have to wait to see if Zip responds here. It's working fine on three different Windows 11 computers I've built, so can't offer any clues about your issue.

Re: strangely missing subtitles

I stumbled on the solution. Posting here in case anyone else runs across it.

On the machine for which subtitles did not work (Win11) serviio was configured with Generic DLNA profile for my TV. Once I changed that to a Samsung profile, subtitles started working.

Re: strangely missing subtitles

Thanks for the follow-up. I hadn't even considered the profile selected. Good job!
