Roku support for video?

Will Serviio support video streaming to my Roku? I have installed Serviio and told it where to find my media files, but I have idea how to tell my Roku about Serviio. The Roku paradigm seems to be based on "adding a private channel", but that requires a "channel code" for Serviio and I can't find one of those using Google. I know the IP address of my server, but Roku seems to provide me no place to supply that.

If anyone knows how to get my Roku to see my Serviio server, please respond. Many thanks!

I count 10 posts in that thread, none of which say "this won't work". I do see "ah bugger, it threw an error" and "try this instead, tho quality will suck".

I'll make it easy for the next potential customer: don't bother, the Roku isn't DLNA compliant, so it won't work with Serviio or the other DLNA-based servers.

Was that so hard?

Actualy no thats NOT what it says, it states that YES the roka can see serviio BUT you wont be be able to play any video files as its requires then in an MP4 container that current is not possible to stream on the fly until ffmpeg ( the library used by serviio to transcode files) find a way of making it work.

erm yes it is grant is not great support but it does support it

You could try Plex though as the other user had some success with that program.

Now that this topic is the first one that pops up when searching "Roku", I'll add my 2-cents to this one. I too would love to see support for Roku, as I'd like to replacement my current streaming solution, PlayOn. PlayOn, as far as I know, also uses FFmpeg and streams just fine to my Roku box via a private channel. Their local streaming component hasn't been updated in a long time, and Serviio works great with my PS3 and appears to be faster & more stable, so it'd be great to have 1 solution rather than relying on both streaming services.

That said, Roku could use some updates of their own to provide better DLNA support!!

I have the sony smp-n100 which is great when paired with serviio.
I want to get my parents streaming since they have a Netflix account and are snail mailing dvd's back and forth (which is a dying service). The one thing they really need is closed captions since they can't hear worth a darn.

I had just made up my mind that Roku 2XD is the box to get. Last thing was to check serviio. DOH!!! Not DLNA? WTF!
I doubt that Roku will make a firmware update for that box to make it DLNA. You will have to buy the "new" box that they come out six months from now

It's not like I could teach them how to stream stuff through Serviio even if I set it up for them anyway, but I still want to be able to use serviio with their box.

Now I guess I'm going back again to look at the Sony smp-n200 box and try to make sure that it will do closed captions. However, that remote has way too many buttons on it for them and the GUI isn't exactly user friendly. My parents always have to make things so complicated. If I'm going to be like that when I'm 77yo, I hope I die young.

Just wanted to say i have been running serviio for a year on my linux server and what a great media server. Hope this helps since the transcode via FFMEG seams to be one of the main issues. Here is the Roku format list.

Nope none of the Rokus are DLNA compliant but you can use something like http://roksbox.com/ as a private channel.
I only posted it because it was stated that it had to be mp4 and thats not true it will handle mov as well but im not sure of the status of on-the-fly for FFMEG for MOV either but something to look at.
And to answer the question no it does not show in the serviio consol.

Serviio support asf/wmv transcoding output, so if private channel can create bridge between serviio and roku, it probably be possible.

I just added a couple of Roku boxes this weekend. Their user interface and channel interfaces for Amazon and Netflix are far superior to my Sony SNP boxes. HD, captions and digital sound are there. And there is an amazing amount of different channels available for a wide variety of entertainment.

That being said, I can't believe they feel that there's no demand for DLNA streaming support. I tried Roksbox but it never found my Serviio server. The Plex app seems to be functional, but Serviio works far better for me than Plex. Plus, Plex can't run as a Windows service, so the computer must be logged into at all times for it to work. I don't like leaving my server that way.

It seems the best way to get a connection to Serviio is for someone to create a private channel for it, similar to the Plex channel. That effort was by the Plex team, and I have no idea if Zip has the time and/or energy for such aa task. I have a fair programming knowledge using Vis Basic, which Roku claims is similar to the language they use. However, I know nothing about DLNA protocols and how such a system might work. I'm willing to help, but I don't feel my expertise is sufficient to spearhead it myself.

Was checking stuff out before finally going for a roku myself and after some digging found out there's a roku channel you can snag called chaneru that enables DLNA support and serviio is visible and usable through it so may be worth checking out figured i'd share my findings

This looks like it may be a workable solution, but so far I can't get it to show a list of movies from Serviio. After it seems to load the video list I select it and it drops back to the main Roku screen. I tried playing from my two Windows 7 boxes, and I continued to get error messages and nothing would play.

I have Plex also running on my server (since Roku has an app for that) but I can't seem to get a video to play from it either.

However, I don't want this to turn into chaneru support, so that's all I'll say for it now. Doesn't seem to work right yet.
