Samsung D Series Summary

I have a D series TV and BR player, and have opened this thread to maintain a summary of the problems and fixes that I have identified. This will allow me to keep track of all these items in one place, (I'll edit this first post as required) and hopefully it will be of value to other Samsung D series users.
Please post replies as required to ask questions or add more info, and I will respond/verify/add to this post.

File Playback
I have found that the D series can play most of my files natively. And that the Samsung manuals correctly state that capability in their "Supported File Formats" section. The Samsung C/D profile 1.6 contained in Serviio Version .6 correctly converts the file formats that are not natively supported, in particular .flv format files with H.264(avc) video codecs are simply remuxed to avc.ts and all other .flv video codecs are converted and remuxed to mpeg2video.ts which includes VP6.flv and H263.flv files. There is however a bug which prevents those transcoded VP6.flv and H263.flv files from playing back on the D series TV's, however they play back correctly on BR's. I have reported this as bug #429 https://bitbucket.org/xnejp03/serviio/issue/429/samsung-d-series-tv-wont-play-transcoded Since YouTube will utilize H263 when selecting "low quality" and fail, select "medium quality" for youtube links on D series TV's until this issue is corrected.

File Skipping
I have found that all files except mpegs (.mpg,.mpeg,.vob,.vro,.ts,.tp and .trp) will allow "skipping". Unbelievably the mpegs on the D series do not offer skipping when played over DLNA which I believe is a unique Samsung D series firmware bug in both the TV's and BR's because both the B and C series allow mpeg skipping. I have tried to raise this issue with Samsung in hopes of a future firmware fix. The significance of this is that no transcoded file can be skipped because they are all remuxed to an mpeg container. This is more fully detailed in http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2714 Others should raise this issue with Samsung in order to raise the fix priority.

Since all .flv files will be transcoded and not skip, my workaround for local flv files that I want to be able to skip is to preconvert avc.flv to avc.mkv and H263/VP6.flv to divx.avi using the attached "convert FLV.bat", which I offer as is. It will need to be set up to point at your Mediainfo_CLI.exe and ffmpeg.exe.

D Button Menu Sort and Resume Support
The D Series TV's support these functions correctly, however D series BR's do not, even though they are reportedly supported on both B and C series BR's. This has been verified with Samsungs All Share server. There is however a bug in Serviio when attempting to sort the TV menus, which causes the TV to lock up and be repowered. This has been reported as bug #420 https://bitbucket.org/xnejp03/serviio/issue/420/samsung-d-series-tv-hangs-on-menu-sort

Online Files
The Samsung C/D profile 1.6 contained in Serviio Version .6 requires additions to correctly play .mp4 files on the D series. This is detailed and explained in bug report #432 https://bitbucket.org/xnejp03/serviio/issue/432/samsung-c-d-series-on-line-transcoding

When analysing profiles remember that "OnlineTranscoding" rules are inherited by profiles that extend them, while "Transcoding" rules are not, and that the local rules apply to online files as well. That means the C/D profile inherits the OnlineTranscoding rulles from profiles 1 (Generic) and 2 (Samsung B Series), but will override them with any local or online rules in the C/D profile.

YouTube Online
While not exclusive to the D Series, as reported in thread http://forum.serviio.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3601 selecting "high quality" for online playback results in an error when playing resolutions > 1080p. This is due to a bug in youtube.groovy which allows fmt=38 files to be selected. This is reported in bug #431 https://bitbucket.org/xnejp03/serviio/issue/431/youtubegroovy-tries-to-play-formats-1080p and a revised groovy is attached in the thread response.

Unpopulated Online links
Servio repopulates all the online menus with each startup which requires ffmpeg to be run for each menu item. This can take a long time if one has many online links. On my D Series, if a link is opened before it has started to populate (the link url has not been replaced with the link's title), an empty menu will open and you will be kicked out of Serviio with an error message when you attempt to return out of the folder. This has been reported as part of bug #422 https://bitbucket.org/xnejp03/serviio/issue/422/2-stage-online-menu-population which also includes proposals to accelerate the population and/or populate on demand so the crash does not occur.

That's a network issue with nothing to do with D series or Serviio, just poor wi-fi...go wired.

a high quality router is always suggested (netgear) and remember to turn all downloads OFF (torrents) on the pc running serviio while your streaming.

Re: Samsung D Series Summary

Hi,

i have a Samsung 40D7000. Having assumed I needed to Transcode .MKV files in order for them to play on the Samsung, i enabled Transcoding and had pretty good success with files <10GB.

However a 11GB file with DTS audio just would not play without frequent buffering. Thinking this might be an audio transcoding issue I messed about for a while not not much avail. Then i read the tv manual which suggested the D7000 supported .MKV natively.

So I turned off Transcoding and all worked fine (apart from the file does not seem to list in the 'Movies' video category (can only get to it via 'Folders').

this suggests to me the current (v0.6.1) C/D profile is invalid and needs sorting. Let me know how I can assist should you be interested. 8-)

Cheers,

Chodberry.

profile has NOTHING to do with were files are listed, so you comment is INVALID. you need to correct filename so it can be assigned correct metadata.

Cerb, no need to shout, he's asking about transcoding primarily.

OP, can you post ffmpeg -i of the file?

Hi,

Here's the ffmpeg output:

    Stream #0:1(eng): Audio: dts (DTS-HD MA), 48000 Hz, 5.1(side), s16, 1536 kb/s (default)

BTW - the point of my previous post was mainly to suggest (after an ironic case of RTFM on my part) that if the current C/D profile currently Transcodes a file that will play natively, then perhaps it should be modified to not do so?

What would be good to understand is the line items in the current C/D profile that result in this file being Transcoded rather than played natively.

Cheers,

Chodberry

can you also provide media info output for the file? I think it might be marked as profile > 4.1 which would cause the transcode to kick in.

Re: Samsung D Series Summary

Hello guys,

I've been using Serviio together with a Samsung UE37D5500 for quite some time now and everything works flawless.
Although, after I updated to 0.6.1, after some time playing *any mkv* file, the audio goes out of sync from the picture. If I do a fast forward of just a few secs, it goes back to normal. And then again, after some time, audio out of sync. A temporary fix for the problem is, as I mentioned, to do a fast forward to sync up the audio again. But of course I'm not happy with this solution.
I can't seem to find the reason for this. Any tips?

Regards

this may relate to samsung intergration that got broken in 0.6.1 and is fixed in 0.6.2 wait for it to be release and u should be ok again ( eta soon)

I downgraded to 0.6.0.1 which had not this problem, but now it does. And because of it, I just realized something, that around the same time I upgraded to 0.6.1 I also upgraded my Samsung TV to firmware 1019 from 1016. Is it possible that the 1019 firmware is responsible for this sync issue?

Re: Samsung D Series Summary

Alot of time sync issues that crop up in a video file after it is played a little is due to a bad video frame and the sound gets off cause the player or transcoding will skip that frame. That is why pausing and restarting fixes it. The audio is resynced.

Look for a program that will key mkv files.

Re: Samsung D Series Summary

Hi all,

I have a 32D6530. I installed serviio a few days ago, it sees the TV but the TV doesn't see the server. When I start AllShare - a message pops up on the TV asking whether to connect to the PC. Nothing happens when I start seriio. I tried using the 3 samsung TV profiles to no avail. Any ideas how to connect?

And my other query - once I get it connected - then where do I go in the smart hub menu to play the files?

Sorry if these have been discussed already in the forum but I couldn't find anything. Thanks.

Re: Samsung D Series Summary

You need to do a little more looking and reading. Serviio is a DLNA server and has nothing to do with the Smarthub menu which is a proprietary Samsung interface. Serviio is accessed thru the Video/Photos/Audio menu, as is the Samsung All-Share server. There is lots of forum info on setting up and accessing it. Start by clicking the big SERVIIO at thetop of this page. This has nothing at all to do with the D series TV's.

I have moved my post from "samsung" to here as it is a BD-D5100

BD-D5100 .M2TS DTS(HD) (Possible?)

First post. I am trying (via DLNA/Serviio) to play files from a demo disc. The video will play but the audio (DTS-HD) "unsupported ...". Is this possible? How? Profile issue? Player issue? Serviio issue? FFmpeg issue?

Player is Samsung BD-D5100
OS is Vista Home Basic
TV is LG 50PV400

Since I first posted i ran a few files (True HD/DTS-HD Audio) through tsremux which extracted the core audio (from 7 channel to 6 channel) and the True HD audio files played but not the DTS files. Would like to know the best way of streaming them.

Any help/pointers would be appreciated.
Thanks
