transcoding audio settings

I see there is a setting for audio, "keep original", or "downmix to stereo". For a modern HD TV, are there any files that would need the "downmix to stereo" option? Can't they play all kinds of audio files, and downmix in the actual TV if necessary?

Re: transcoding audio settings

the setting is there as certain devices NEED it but not ALL devices do.
