How do I install Serviio on a Zyxel NSA-310 ?

Hi,

I just purchased a Zyxel NSA-310 and was looking for some help on installing Serviio.

I can run a telnet session using Putty to the NAS drive, but will need some help/pointers on the next step.

Here is some info regarding this NAS (1.2GHz, 256Mb).

cat /proc/cpuinfo
Processor : Feroceon 88FR131 rev 1 (v5l)
BogoMIPS : 1199.30

cat /proc/meminfo
MemTotal: 247964 kB
MemFree: 15484 kB

cat /proc/version
Linux version 2.6.31.8 (root@Neo) (gcc version 3.4.3 (MontaVista 3.4.3-25.0.70.0501961 2005-12-18)) #1 Fri Jul 15 19:31:37 CST 2011

more details can be found at :-
http://zyxel.nas-central.org/wiki/Some_ ... c_(NSA-310)

So any advice on how to start would be welcomed.

Thanks !

well ... i guess if I stop some of the applications running, this will free up memory ...

but ultimately, will it be able to run serviio (cerberus does not seem to think so) ?

I'm also trying with the same device. The build in media server is really bad! I've tried twonky but there is not a correct version available. Fonz fun plug is working correctly and really want Serviio to work, because of my panasonic tv. I do know a bit, but also need some directions!

I had another look, I think I can free up another 70MB if I stop the default media server and other services ... that will give me ~85MB of memory.

Is that enough ? Pointers on how to install Serviio anyone ?

Thanks.

min memory is 128kb if i remember correctly to be able to use serviio but everything would have to be sent natively with no transcoding at all.

I presume you mean 128Mb.

I just checked and the max memory that the zyxel can address is 512Mb DDR2. Before I go and open up the box and load it with DDR2, I would just like to know if Serviio can be installed ?

Help anyone ?

Thank you in advance ...

It has 256 mb ddr2 and 1.2 ghz processor. Isn't it that linux always try to fill up most of the memory, like Android which is also based on linux? In that case it's not more than normal it only has a few mb left, and that it should run Serviio quite good? If not, how to install it, without encoding to work.

Re: How do I install Serviio on a Zyxel NSA-310 ?

you have to make sure Java is available for it and you can build FFmpeg (or get a compiled version for it somewhere). Then you should be ok. I don't know the processor. So I'd check these 2 things and if they are available you should be able to install Serviio. If you then need more memory, you can always open the box later.

Hi,
I'll try to help since I have already some experience on how to install "serviio" on processors ARM5 :geek:

First, have you root access ?
if Yes, Zip is right, the first things to do, is to check if java is installed, or if you can install it.
if not, find a way to become root :?

I don't know this linux version is a debian ? Do you have aptitude ?
What is your knowledge of Linux environments ?

I do not have root access (not yet !)
How do I check if Java is installed ? Also, how do I know which version is installed ?
How do I know if it is debian ? As far as I can tell, it has busybox (I guess debian?) installed.

I am a basic linux user ... i.e. no idea about linux kernels, but very willing to learn !

Basically, I can telnet to the NAS, browse around and move files around.

silly me ... I DO have root access ... it is the same as the admin access.

I am pretty sure it does not have java installed. How do I check ?

... what's the next step ?

The probleme if you not have a root acces is that you can't install library like ffmpeg or java.
To test if java is install you can try to type java -h, this should print the version of java, if it print command not recognyzed, it means that it's not installed !
Sorry but you will not do anythings if you can't become root.

Have you check this page :
http://zyxel.nas-central.org/wiki/FFP-stick

You can use this ffp script and modify it to install the debian i put in this post :

Re: How do I install Serviio on a Zyxel NSA-310 ?

hi tihob,

First of all ...
a) I have root access (yippee !)
b) I checked the available memory ... and apparently I have ~190Mb memory available.

I will have a look at FFP-stick and the post you linked me to.

Just to be clear, here are the steps to try ...
1) Modify FFP-stick to install Debian on the stick.
2) Then follow your post using this debian on the stick. I am guessing that this is a way to install Java, FFMPEG and Serviio on the stick ?
3) If I remove the stick, all will be lost ? (unless I install the modified FFP-stick onto the Hard Disk Drive in the NAS

or do you mean get Debian installed on the stick, then use Debian to install Java, FFMPEG and Serviio onto the NAS, then when I reboot my NAS (with the USB stick removed), all will be there except for Debian ?

Any pointers would be very much appreciated ...

time to give it a go ... (have to do a bit of reading now ... )

Thanks for the directions ...

Good news, but be conscient that 190MB of memory, will permit you to just transcode video playable on your player device

If You use the package i post in the previous link, you will have a debian + ffmpeg + serviio preconfigured.
So if you can boot with this, It will do you no need to install anything ;)

Not excatly, in the stick you will have debian squeeze with ffmpeg and serviio, if you remove the stick (don't do when the nas is running), nothing will be erase, it just boot in his normal mode (without debian...).
Try to understand how ffp works to adapt the script to your nas.

Hi Dangerousp / tihob,

I could not get fonz fun plug working ... The telnet daemon does not seem to be started ?

I am using firmware 4.22(AFK.0) on my NSA-310.

Attached is my ffpboot.log

Can you advise ? Did I miss a step somewhere ?

Thanks in advance ...

harpoon.
