Re: Android Console

I've uploaded a new version. This mostly focuses on better handling of connection errors when fetching data from the server. The next release will address errors when sending data to the server.

If the app crashes and doesn't have an internet connection, I won't get the report so please post if it does.

Download Beta 5

Beta 5
If refreshing data fails, the old valid data will not be overrided with invalid data
Fixed trying to connected when no network connection is available (which requires a new permission 'ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE')
Fixed main view loading and then crashing because the initial data load did not complete
Implemented part of #11 Check for app updates - Press Menu->About to check for updates
Fixed #12: Force close when adding the first shared folder/online soruce
Fixed #13: 0.6.0.1 doesn't support online refresh
Switched save/cancel button ordering to match native android dialogs
Icon updates
Minor layout performance improvements
Automatically update devices if hide unknown devices preference is changed
Fixed crash on rapid screen rotate

Re: Android Console

I might be able to do some testing on a couple 16:9 tablets tomorrow. If I do, I'll get some more screens to see how it looks.

Well I have emulators so can generate screenshots, it is more the usability aspects I'm interested in. But any input is welcome.

Re: Android Console

Registered to let you know i just tried your app on the Kindle Fire and everything seems to be working fine. screens look good on the 7" screen and are very readable even with my poor eyesight. Tested in landscape and portrait modes and both are equally easy to read. I am running serviio 0.6.0.1 on an older HP 470 WHS with an upgraded amd cpu.

Keep up the nice job @will and thank you @zip for such a wonderful product in serviio, now if i could only find a web os media player like mobo for android i would be in high heaven with my hp tablets (waaay too many movies/shows in avi/mkv to convert for hp table to play)

Take the plunge and try CM7 on your Touchpad. It's rather simple to install and it dual boots with Web OS, so it's not as though you have to give that up.

Re: Android Console

I've uploaded a new version (beta 6) which you should be able to download by pressing Menu->About->Download and then opening and installing the .apk in a file manager. You may not be able to install it directly from you browsers download manager as it is not served up as an 'application/vnd.android.package-archive'. I may try to fix this later, but probably not as most people will have a file manager and the main idea was to easyily get the .apk onto your phones. If you are new to serviio droid - here is a link Beta 6

This address errors when sending data to the server. The two cases for this are, connection errors, and errors in what you have typed, e.g. invalid URL in an online source. I'll now start to add some more features. I'm aiming to get the automatic configuration and multiple servers added in the next release, but as always, if there is something you want that is/isn't on the issues list then tell me via the forums and I'll see what I can do.

  Code:
*Lots of minor performance improvements around stopping old network threads
*Added latest server version to status if an update to the server is available from serviio.org
*Added server address to status
*Settings that don't exist on an old server version are now hidden rather than shown but dissabled
*Implemented #6 Return code checking
*Implemented #7 Notify the user if http requests timeout/fail
*Finished #11 Check for app updates

You have made an effort to help test things out so i'll have a look at that over the next few nights. Although I'm also working on your other request of multiple server details :)

Did you get anywhere with some example device icons? I'm planning to add them to the list view and as icons on the drop down lists that will be used to select profiles.

Is everything working (and displaying correctly/not showning any extra options) under your 0.6 server?

Re: Android Console

Ive not noticed any errors, im likeing display of ip address of server

Ive done a few icons, all the icons ive done have no background. Would be easier if you have themes in your app that boxes changes colour
some look better with a white background, done a few different designs for bravia since i own one!
Theres a DNLA/UPnP icon for unknown or WMP devices that use the default dnla profile

Re: Android Console

Thanks, I'll have a play at the weekend to try them but I think they are a bit too detailed remember, they need to look good down to 16x16 so that they can be on the profile selection menu. Also they look a bit too copyright infringmenty and a bit too specific (=would have to do a lot and would be effort to maintain with new profiles), was thinking much more generic icons with only one for TV, Settopbox, console, phone, tablet, pc and generic/unknown

Re: Android Console

Yep, especially the DLNA icon - I'd be careful, they told me to remove any mention of DLNA from the website.

Re: Android Console

I thought Serviio is DNLA compliant and free to use
Ive seen other server products which highlight the DNLA features alot like Mezzmo and TVMOBiLi

The icons very detailed cos im working on a little Serviio app project myself for my xap unlocked WP7 device
Insprired by your Android Serviio console :D
It suited the Metro design of Windows Phone 7, its very early stage and really just a hobby :geek:

Re: Android Console

Zip will be able to answer that one but I believe you have to pay in order to be certified / compliant which then lets you use their logos etc. As for the rest eg Sony, that logo will also be protected.

Anyway it does suit wp7 but do tread lightly if it becomes more than a hobby, and it would be nice if you did as it looks good so far.

@zip what font are you using for the serviio logo text?
Do you have any high resolution versions of the main icon?

Yes, you have to pay and they don't want ppl to use the logo as the product has not been certified and might not work the way they intend it to. - Fair enough I think.

@zip what font are you using for the serviio logo text?

Not sure, I think I created it in a web logo maker if I remember correctly.

Do you have any high resolution versions of the main icon?

Haven't I sent you one?

At the moment its a personal hobby i started since i use Serviio all day! :D

Nope. (Not that I can find in my PM inbox)

Bigger versions of some of the other icons e.g. music, film etc would be useful as well if you have them, but less so that the main icon.

Re: Android Console

@Xmantium
Only just saw your new issue (#16) as bitbucket has been playing up this morning. I'll fix that for the next release so thanks for reporting it. There (hopefully :)) won't be problems like this for future server versions.

As for presentation, as expected, it was a royal pain (working out the best way to convert the data to flatten it for the view, and then efficiently map it back), but its getting there. I know zip is planning on releasing 0.6.1 very very soon, if I get the rest of the presentation work and 0.6 fixes for online sources done tonight/tomorrow night can you test it on your 0.6 server before upgrading it to 0.6.1.

@User with Beta 6 on HTC Desire runing 2.2.2 and 0.6.0.1 server who had a force close last night, I think i've found the issue and It should be fixed in the next release.

Re: Android Console

Thanks for the efforts Will.
I was thinking that too when 0.6.1 is coming very soon but then again how long did it take people to upgrade from Internet Explorer 6!?

I'm liking the new Serviio version reminder to let people know.

It would be cool if there was a an API that checks what plugins are installed or even give a list of plugins installed. So when a user adds a iPlayer URL and checks there's no iPlayer groovy plugin installed it warns the user to install it. (I know I've done it so many times!!)
