Re: Samsung C/D series profile question

What network setup? There's not much you can set up in the Blu-Ray player, just wired (100 Mbps) or wireless (54 Mbps) ... I tried both and they behave exactly the same. The LAN has no problems; I get top speed on my computers. The computer running Serviio is wired. So it's not a Wi-Fi issue.

My Blu-Ray player's manual says nothing about supported video bitrates, just this:

Image

Both of the unplayable video file examples I posted have uncompressed PCM audio. Maybe that's the problem?
I tried testing with a flash drive, but the .VOB files are not recognized by the player; they don't show up at all.

More about my setup:
BD-C6500 —HDMI→ Insignia NS-42L550A11 TV —optical SPDIF→ Denon AVR-1601 receiver

The player is configured for "Bitstream (Re-encode)" output, as recommended for a DVD-era receiver like mine:

Update 2012-07-07: At some point, I changed it to "PCM" output; it didn't help.

The TV is configured for the SPDIF to output RAW [previous version of this message said PCM, but I meant RAW]. The receiver is configured for automatic input detection, rather than PCM-only, DTS-only, or analog-only. With this combination of settings, everything works as expected; the receiver goes into Dolby Digital, DTS, or Dolby Pro Logic mode automatically as needed for whatever is coming in from the TV. It seems to be the only combination that works at all.

I'd be happy to test some tweaks to my profiles.xml or use ffmpeg command-line to prepare some other files to test with. I'm just kind of clueless as to what to try.

quality of the router used is also a factor.

Re: Samsung C/D series profile question

The router is a Linksys WRT-54G v.6, stock firmware, latest available. The PC running Serviio is a brand-new Lenovo ThinkCentre M91p 7052 workstation, with onboard Intel 82579LM Gigabit network hardware, and it's running Win7 Pro SP1 64-bit. The problem also existed when streaming from my previous 6-year-old home-built workstation with a different network card. I really doubt it's a problem with the network.

There ya go Linksys are useless, i tested 3 of them and they were all useless put in a decent netgear WNDR4000 and i was sorted.

Re: Samsung C/D series profile question

I don't have access to another router.

Also I have to change my description of the problem: at least with the files I'm testing right now, it seems only the audio is affected. Video is fine. The sound I'm getting at first sounds like it's got a buzzing sound over the top, and then after a couple seconds it switches to a fast choppy effect, as if every fraction of a second, a bunch of samples are being replaced with silence. The audio stays in sync with the video, but it's basically unlistenable. I also confirmed it is the same via the analog audio output of the player. Anyone with this player, PM me for a video file to test with and see if you can reproduce the problem.

Re: Samsung C/D series profile question

You can check and see if there is dd-wrt firmware for your linksys. I run the DD-wrt on a linksys at home in a wireless bridge and it works great.

Max 30mbps bitrate is from the manual of my TV. ;)

I experience same fast choppy audio effect on one mkv file of mine which should be supported on my TV (as other files with the same audio and video codecs are playable). This file plays flawlessly on my pc. I believe this is only related to the file itself. For such files I usually use handbrake to re-encode them and they usually play very well afterwards.

Unless of course You experience same problem with all of Your files.

Re: Samsung C/D series profile question

Serviio 0.6.2 didn't fix my BD-C6500's choppy-buzzy PCM audio problem. Advice in another thread led me to this workaround:
  Code:
   <Profile id="22" name="Samsung TV / player (C/D-series) no PCM VOB" extendsProfileId="7">
      <!-- PCM audio in a VOB file is choppy when streamed to my BD-C6500, so I transcode such audio to AC-3 -->
      <Transcoding>
         <Video targetContainer="mpeg" targetACodec="ac3" aBitrate="384">
            <Matches container="mpeg" aCodec="lpcm"/>
         </Video>
      </Transcoding>
   </Profile>

Transcoding like this works well for me, so I'm putting this out there for anyone else who might be experiencing this issue.

A couple of notes:
  • I don't know if the container really matters, but since the only place I encounter PCM is in VOB files, I only match container="mpeg".
  • I've done more testing, using the default Samsung C/D profile and ffmpeg to reduce the bitrate of just the audio (by making it mono) or just the video (by re-encoding it at ffmpeg's lowest quality), and found that these kind of changes in order to reduce the overall bitrate are ineffective; any PCM-containing VOB will have choppy audio when I stream it to this BD player as-is, under the default Samsung C/D profile. I couldn't test with sub-48 KHz sample rates, though, as the player doesn't support them. And as mentioned in previous messages, (a) I doubt the network is at fault, as it happens over a wired connection, and (b) it happens regardless of the player's audio output configuration, even affecting analog output. So I am pretty well convinced, so far, that the player is just not capable of PCM playback in streamed MPEG content. However I'd be happy to admit I'm totally wrong, if I had a way of testing. So if you'd like me to test with other files and the default Samsung C/D profile, let me know.

Re: Samsung C/D series profile question

Hello,

I have a little question.

Is it normal, that I can´t ff/rew when the movie (mkv) is transcoded?

Greetings

Re: Samsung C/D series profile question

Yes, unbelievably Samsung Series D cannot jump any mpeg video, which means anything transcoded cannot be jumped. See viewtopic.php?f=10&t=2714&p=16621#p16621
