Can't play old MPG files on Panasonic TV G20

Hi,

I recently tested the 2 new Panasonic profiles (with or withou AVI) and I realized my TV works better with the original Panasonic Viera profile.
But I still have some files that don't want to play, in particular these 2 MPG videos.

The first one works with both profiles mentioned above, but doesn't with the Panasonic Viera one:

The second doesn't play at all:

Can you please help and give me instructions on how to change the Panasonic Viera profile to play these files too?
Thanks a lot!

Re: Can't play old MPG files on Panasonic TV G20

The first is easier than the second.

The TV supports mpeg2video, but not mpeg1video, which is what the first file is. The old profile does not take that into account, so when using that profile, the file can't be transcoded into something usable.

The new profiles include a rule to cover mpeg1. So, if you want to continue to use the old default profile, all you have to do is cut and paste one line from the new profile into the default Viera profile. Add this to the section for unsupported codecs, and see if that will help:

<Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video" targetACodec="ac3">
....
<Matches container="mpeg" vCodec="mpeg1video" />
....
</Video>

As for the second file, ffmpeg does not appear to read the contents correctly (see the line about duration). Someone else will have to chime in on that but if ffmpeg can't read the input, then the file can't be transcoded into something playable.

Re: Can't play old MPG files on Panasonic TV G20

First file doesn't play, even with that line added in the "panasonic viera" profile.
Where did you see mpeg2video for the second file?

This is the DLNA certification for my TV:

Re: Can't play old MPG files on Panasonic TV G20

@cerberus:

AFAIK video codec support in the TV is same, or very similar to 2011 E-series (I looked up the users manual online). MPEG-1 transcoded to MPEG-PS/mpeg2video/ and MP3 or lpcm should play on his set, ESPECIALLY if it plays when using the new profile. Mbe not MPEG-TS, but MPEG-PS definitely should play. According to ffmpeg info posted above, 2nd video has an odd track, so it may not play at all.

I would say, he should use one of the new profile (2011 set), and try to find out what does not work with the new one, as opposed to edit old profile??

Re: Can't play old MPG files on Panasonic TV G20

I am not an expert, so I've done what you said: now I am working with the "panasonic with AVI support" ... because I guess my G20 is AVI compatible.

The second file above is still not playable.
And also most of the MKV files, like this one:

  Code:
ffmpeg version 0.9, Copyright (c) 2000-2011 the FFmpeg developers
  built on Dec 13 2011 20:46:11 with gcc 4.4.2

erver --enable-memalign-hack --enable-libmp3lame --enable-librtmp --extra-libs='
-lrtmp -lpolarssl -lws2_32 -lwinmm' --arch=x86 --enable-runtime-cpudetect --enab
le-pthreads --target-os=mingw32 --cross-prefix=i686-mingw32- --pkg-config=pkg-co
nfig
  libavutil    51. 32. 0 / 51. 32. 0

  libavdevice  53.  4. 0 / 53.  4. 0
  libavfilter   2. 53. 0 /  2. 53. 0
  libswscale    2.  1. 0 /  2.  1. 0

Seems stream 0 codec frame rate differs from container frame rate: 50.00 (50/1)
-> 50.00 (50/1)
Input #0, matroska,webm, from 'testHD.mkv':
  Duration: 00:10:01.06, start: 0.000000, bitrate: 5664 kb/s
    Stream #0:0(eng): Video: h264 (High), yuv420p, 1280x720, SAR 1:1 DAR 16:9, 2
5 fps, 50 tbr, 1k tbn, 50 tbc (default)
    Stream #0:1(ita): Audio: aac, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16 (default)
    Metadata:
      title           : italiano
    Stream #0:2(eng): Audio: aac, 48000 Hz, stereo, s16

At least one output file must be specified

I used the UPnP Device Spy but it doesn't detect my TV.
Is there another way I can provide you more details?

Thanks a lot for the precious support!

Re: Can't play old MPG files on Panasonic TV G20

That MKV file was made using an older version of MKV Merge. 2009 is long ago in the life of most MKV tools (sigh). I would try running some kind of MKV validation or repair tool on that file, or, test with a file made using a current build of MKV Merge, and then go back to this one. Whatever is more convenient. Can't think of anything else at the moment.

Re: Can't play old MPG files on Panasonic TV G20

Hi hi,

I believe your TV has the same compatibility as my V20, which means no MKV support.

If you have a look at the post I made about the V20, Cerberus has posted a mod to make mkv file transcode.

The other thing I have come across occasionally with mkv files is not all AAC soundtracks play and when transcoding they go out of sync, but that is only on a few files. Also the source video needs to be in the correct aspect ratio or it will stretch, but I see the one you are trying is, so should be ok.

Ok, if this set is from 2010, and does not support mkv files, then the new profiles would not work w/o some additions as you say... (in other words, I was wrong in above post).

In that case, it probably only supports MPEG-TS and MPEG-PS through DLNA. The two new profiles were made assuming mkv support and support for some MP4 files.

Re: Can't play old MPG files on Panasonic TV G20

G20 does not support MKV through DLNA.
That's why the Panasonic Viera original profile plays more video files than the 2 newer ones.

So, to recap, I would go back and use the original Panasonic Viera profile.
Most of MKV files worked with it, so no need to clean them.

And we go to the original issue: I'd like to play those 2 MPG files too.
One of them is played with both new Panasonic profiles.
Should I change something for the mp1 audio support as suggested by Cerberus? How?

Thanks!

Re: Can't play old MPG files on Panasonic TV G20

I changed mp3 with lcpm and now also the first MPG file works with the Panasonic Viera default profile.
(I do not know if it is the right things to do ....)

  Code:
<!-- unsupported audio will be transcoded into lpcm audio -->
<Audio targetContainer="lpcm">
...

Any suggestion for the second one pls?

tbh, I asked for help with 2 MPG files not playing with the standard Panasonic profile.
Someone suggested to use the new Panasonic profile and adjust it.
Few steps after, someone else realized that my TV does not support MKV, so it is better to use the standard Panasonic Profile.
So, after a long thread, I am exactly at the starting point: two MPG files not playing with the standard Panasonic profile.

Because the first one was playing good with the new profiles and you suggested it was related to the mp1 audio setting, I tried to change the standard Panasonic profile to match the audio config of the new Panasonic profiles ... I just changed "mp3" to "lpcm" as stated above.
Now also the first MPG file works with the standard Panasonic profile.

I only need to adjust the profile to play the second MPG file .... that's what I am asking help for ....

Re: Can't play old MPG files on Panasonic TV G20

The default profile for 0.6.2 wont exist in the next version of serviio, this is why we need to find out for certain what your device supports so that if any changes to the new profile are required they can be made before the next release, so that your device functions with these new profile or if i have to make a seperate profile for the older 20 series of devices. Now if the only difference is MKV support that easily sorted, but if there is a wider difference then i need to do alot more testing. Do avi files play? do mp4 files play? i dont know as no one has given me any information to work from, if its yes then i can simple add one line to the new profiles and then we are all sorted with a 3rd profile for older panasonics.

so if its just lacking MKV support then profile would be this.

  Code:
<Profile id="24" name="Panasonic Viera 2010" extendsProfileId="1">
        <ContentDirectoryMessageBuilder>org.serviio.upnp.service.contentdirectory.PacketVideoDLNAMessageBuilder</ContentDirectoryMessageBuilder>
        <SubtitlesMimeType>text/srt</SubtitlesMimeType>
        <MediaFormatProfiles>
           <MediaFormatProfile mime-type="video/divx">AVI</MediaFormatProfile>
        </MediaFormatProfiles>
        <Transcoding>
      <!-- Transcode h264 videos with profile level > 4.1 to mpegts with ac3 audio -->
      <Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video" targetACodec="ac3" >
         <Matches container="avi" vCodec="h264" profile="high" levelGreaterThan="4.2" />

              <Matches container="mp4" vCodec="h264" aCodec="aac"/>

           <Video targetContainer="mpeg">

              <Matches container="asf" />
              <Matches container="adts" />
           </Audio>
        </Transcoding>
    </Profile>

ok found issue with the second file after a closer look you can see the first audio track is AC3 with 0 channels now thats not right as it should atleast have 1 channel (mono) so file will need to be remuxed and the ironious ac3 audio tarck removed and then it will play.

That was me :oops: (sorry). I did not realize this set was from 2010, and I keep getting confused between the Euro- and US-spec sets (sigh). Most of the manuals for sets sold in Europe after 2009 are online somewhere. This web site applies to the UK, but it may be a place to start:

http://www.panasonic.co.uk/html/en_GB/7 ... egory.html

So, starting at that page, and going to the closest part number, and to the manual, this is what is found for DLNA:

DLNA®
This TV is a DLNA Certified™ product.
DLNA (Digital Living Network Alliance) is a standard that makes DLNA Certified digital electronics easier
and more convenient to use on a home network. To learn more, visit http://www.dlna.org.
It allows you to share photos and videos stored in the DLNA Certified media server (for example, PC with
windows 7 installed, DIGA Recorder etc.) connected to your home network, and enjoy watching them on
the TV screen.
■Applicable data format
Photo : JPEG (Sub-sampling 4:4:4, 4:2:2 or 4:2:0)
Image resolution - 8 × 8 to 30,719 × 17,279 pixels
●MOTION JPEG and Progressive JPEG are not supported.
Video : MPEG-2 (PS format and TS format)

This is probably not a complete list (my 2011 set supports a couple formats not listed in the manual), but one can search around in the manual and find references to DiVX and AVI, and also format of subtitle files etc...
