If you decide to run serviio longer, can you please send me the serviio.log file and the debug logs the next time you get the BSOD.

Re: JAVA causing blue screen isssues in Win 7x64

Hi guys,

It has been a while but here I am with 2 log files.

I took a quick look at the logs and searched for an event at the time a BSOD occurred.
This is the last event that occurs in the logs before a BSOD:
in log file 3-22 this is: 2012-03-22 21:31:56,326 DEBUG [ProcessExecutor] Starting C:\Program Files (x86)\Serviio\bin\\..\lib/ffmpeg.exe -i Z:\The Hunting Party\The.Hunting.Party.LIMITED.DVDRip.XviD-SAPHiRE.avi
and in log file 3-30 we have: 2012-03-30 08:26:21,450 DEBUG [ProcessExecutor] Starting C:\Program Files (x86)\Serviio\bin\\..\lib/ffmpeg.exe -i Z:\The Descent\The.Descent.DVDRip.XviD-DoNE.avi

I don't have any knowledge of the backend structure of serviio but it seems that there is a problem with ffmpeg.exe.
Since I'm not an expert I will shut up and let you guys do the further investigations ;-)

Hope this will help to solve the problem.

Greetings

*edit*: My PC just had another BSOD, second one today. I've attached the log.

you could try to upgrade your ffmpeg. http://wiki.serviio.org/doku.php?id=win_ffmpeg

Re: JAVA causing blue screen isssues in Win 7x64

If its happening after 15 to 20 minutes its not software , would crash almost immediatly. IMHO , your CPU is overheating. Dollars to dougnuts I'll bet the CPU fins under the fan are chock full of dust. Seen it several times. Most base units ( and desktops to a lesser extent) sit on the floor and act as low level vacume cleaners and the fans and heatsinks are usually filled with crud.
You could try running the machine with the cover off and see what happens. It'll be most pronounced when transcoding and when ffmpeg.exe is hammering the cpu if Im right. When you upgraded you may have a different device profile than you have now so you may now be transcoding when you previously were not. I'd be inclined to see what happens when useing a generic avi file that (or TS ) that doesn't use ffmpeg. See if lasts longer before going belly up. Also check if you have an app to see if you can get the CPU heat stats, if it hiting +75 C at any time your entering an instabilty area.

Re: JAVA causing blue screen isssues in Win 7x64

Hi,

I've upgrade ffmpeg but the problem still occurs.

I don't suppose my PC is overheating since I clean it every half a year.
I've also disabled transcoding since I don't need it, so my CPU is sitting there, doing almost nothing.
Futhermore, those BSODs are appearing at random, even when Serviio is idle (streaming nothing).
There were days I've watched 3 movies without any problem and on another day, when I'm not using Serviio, a BSOD occurs.

Very strange.

Thanks for the tips but still no joy.
Any other suggestions?

Thanks!

Re: JAVA causing blue screen isssues in Win 7x64

Ive been experiencing these issues, but they dont occur during use of serviio. watching a movie, adding and removing files/libraries is fine.

My bsod's dont occur during any active hours, just when im sleeping and seeding etc, thats when it occurs. Serviio is idle, pc is idle, tv is off etc. Then i wake up to find that my computer has restarted and recovered from unexpected shutdown.

Ive had serviio disabled for 3 days, computer running 24/7 for months, and this has been the only 3 days of stability. Having just found this thread, ive updated my ffmpeg/java (disabled jushed), and will proceed to test

Re: JAVA causing blue screen isssues in Win 7x64

The problems stopped for me after I explicitly installed the offline 64-bit Java version (since I use Win64) (e.g. not only the file that automatically is downloaded when you click "Download java" on java.com", but the 64-bit file on http://java.com/en/download/manual.jsp ). E.g. now I have two Java installations (screenshot from Programs under Control Panel in Win)

If it actually was related to this, or if I've just been "lucky", I can't tell, but at least it works now. So I hope this helps for others as well (at least try it out if you don't have both versions installed).

Re: JAVA causing blue screen isssues in Win 7x64

Hi drgz,

Thanks for your reply.
I have also installed the 64 vit version of java but i'm still at version 6 so i assume that problem is solved in version 7.
I will install it now. If i experience any problem after that i'll put it here.

Re: JAVA causing blue screen isssues in Win 7x64

So did upgrading java via offline version, latest Serviio, and latest ffmpeg fix this BSoD issue for people?

I'm hoping so since there hasn't been a response for a while. I've had 18 blue screens since early July with this which I never thought would have been serviio/java/ffmpeg related.

I've done what others have suggested in this thread so hopefully this will fix my blue screen issues. Time will tell.

Detailed a bit more about what I've done/setup here: http://mattie47.com/windows-7-blue-scre ... x000000f4/

Re: JAVA causing blue screen isssues in Win 7x64

I was also having these BSOD issues until I got annoyed and stopped allowing the Serviio service to run. I was having the BSODs every 2 weeks and since I've disabled the service I haven't had one in about 5 months. To anyone who says that a Java application cannot cause a BSOD, I wish you were right, but unfortunately it can happen.

Since the Windows Media Player DLNA server sucks to badly, I need to get Serviio working again. Therefore, I've also just uninstalled all my existing Java versions and installed the 64 bit Java version and the latest version of Serviio. The only thing I'm unsure of now is, for Chrome (32 bit only) to have Java, I have to install the 32 bit version. When I do that, how do I know that Serviio will continue to use the 64 bit version?

Anyway, I will post again in some time to report how things are going at my end.

mattie47, have you had any BSODs since your update? Let us know. Thanks!

As detailed in my blog post above, all my issues have been fixed after doing what I said. If you read the post, I'm not entirely sure if it was Java, as windows event viewer showed ffmpeg to be the culprit. No harm in doing the suggested java stuff as well, which I would suggest you do...

I think you're fine reinstalling java in chrome. I did about a weekish ago, and haven't had any bluescreens.

My machine is on 24/7 and has been running perfect for 1-2 months now. No bluescreens! Look at my above post for more info on what I did :)

Re: JAVA causing blue screen isssues in Win 7x64

I also have random BSOD caused by serviio: stack trace from windbg points to BUCKET_ID: X64_0xF4_ServiioService_IMAGE__

I happens randomly when streaming. Haven't had any other BSOD on this computer for the last 5 years or so.
