New Panasonic Profiles Requiring Testers.

ok think i might have fixed the problems with mkv i was seeing so hopefully this will sort the stutter too.

assuming your running windows 64bit.

download and replace your ffmpeg.exe file with this one (rename your old file .bak incase your have to go back to it) and restart serviio do your files still stutter?

The set of test files from that one specific video (Woody_Allen) is different in a couple ways, including the source being a very difficult video to encode (source has variable frame rates in different scenes, for exmpl). I will not use those for testing from now on (just fyi), I believe the rest of my test files are valid, but I will verify.

All tests with Viera TC-L32E3, US version, Serviio 0.6.2, Windows 7 Pro 64-bit, ffmpeg.exe patch dated February 4, 2012.

summary:

There is an improvement with the downloaded version of ffmpeg dated Feb. 4, but not a complete fix.

details:

Files encoded at level 5 play much better, but not completely smoothly. There is still some noticeable stutter, but not as much.

Test files recorded at Level 4.1 or below which had moderate stutter before are the same.

One set of test files where the video comes to a complete halt for seconds is unchanged. These are files which probably should fall into the Level 5/5.1 category, Media Info and in Serviio detect them as Level 4 or 4.1. These are the files I created to duplicate files voodooo has been posting about.

There MAY be two separate problems that manifest as stutter or jitter in the video stream, with separate causes, and the patched ffmpeg MAY solve one of these, but not both... the rest is above my pay grade...

other:

The new ffmpeg solves a problem I found with one file type since serviio 0.6.2 (and .1, possibly). Some MKV container with MPG v.2 video did not play at all because they caused an error when ffmpeg was invoked. Now they do (thanks for that!)

yep so that solved it the stutter is an ffmpeg issue so the profile we have now can be released as every other issue is fixed. awesome.

1) My model does not play DTS audio (some models do, and I can take care of that myself easily).

2) The E-series plays MKV and MP4 container files with identical video and audio encoding:

H.264, AC-3, MP3 and AAC (it should also play LPCM, according to the manual)

So the rules for MKV and MP4 container should be the same, and files with any of these combinations of encoding are natively supported, and the only issue may be playback above Level 4.1.

3) I don't know the actual bitrate limit, someone else would have to weigh in on that one.

Looking ahead on how subtitles will be supported....

It looks like (some?) Viera devices support embedded subtitles, at least in MKV. We may remux MKV to mpegts though, thus losing the subtitles track. I'll need someone to run a test, remux MKV with subtitles track into mpegts with subtitles track and try to play it via Serviio - do you get the subs available for selection?

You'll need to add -codec:s with the subtitle codec. I think it might be dvdsub or dvbsub. Probably the former.

If this doesn't work we'll have to transcode the file to have the subs burned-in, triggering high CPU usage.

BTW, do external (str) subtitles work with all video formats for you?

I can run the tests but I would need more details on how to remux MKV with subtitles into mpegts with subtitles...

External (srt) subtitles do work with avi and mkv - they definitely don't work with mp4 format.
This is why one of the reasons I remux mp4 to mkv with subtitles - I can have the subtitles and the text is larger than in case of srt file.

dvdsub works with bitmap subtitles, and srt files are text subtitles. Neither ffmpeg nor libavcodec is able to rasterize text subtitles.

If you are ok with hardcoding the subtitles in the video, you can convert the srt file to ASS and use the ass filter: -vf ass=movie.ass

Yes, I am - subtitles do not work with mp4 in either USB or DLNA mode.

OK, I was able to test the mpegts with subtitles.

I have an ffmpeg build from Zeranoe webpage - it supports libass filter.
The libass needs some settings to actually work - as per this post.
Convert the srt subtitiles file into ass (make sure that srt is encoded with UTF8):

I didn't specify any x264 options as I was only trying to have the burnt-in subtitles and didn't care about the picture quality.
