Transcoding 720p Qnap Nas

I've just bought a QNAP 869L which has a intel atom 2.13ghz dual core processor. Also has 3gb RAM in it

does anyone know / have any experience with weather this is powerful enough to transcode 720p video files for the media browser? mostly in .mkv format

Re: Transcoding 720p Qnap Nas

I will give it a go over the next few weeks and let you know how I get on.
Tempted to just keep a stripped out version of my server with a quadcore 3.2ghz in it and run serviio off of that using qnap as storage,

but still i'll give it a try,

On another note, anyone know how to reduce power consumption on a 24/7 server?

Get a highly efficient PSU and don't over rate it 400w when you only need 100w as even on a efficient PSU you won't get a good efficient as low use.

Use power efficient components (stating the obvious really) but careful selection of cpu, mobo, hdd etc all add up.

Re: Transcoding 720p Qnap Nas

Getting a higher rated power supply wont actually affect the amount of power used. The components will draw however much they need. i.e. if you only have 100w draw then it's going to draw 100w regardless of the top end capacity of the PSU you have.
if anything a higher rated PSU running on lower specced hardware will run cooler as it's only using a small portion of it's overall rated capacity.

The key metric to look for in PSU's is their power efficiency rating. the higher the better!!
