Huawei HG533 USB DLNA port question?

Hi,

I have a Sony SMP-N100 and I'm having issues playing video files via Wi-Fi DLNA.

I have a Huawei HG533 Wi-Fi Router which has a USB input that you can connect a USB drive to with media files on it and play the files over Wi-Fi DLNA through various media players, Smart TV's, Tablets etc.

When I navigate the Video menus on my SMP-N100, I can find the folder structure for the USB drive, but when I try and play the videos it says "There is no playable file".

However, my SMP-N100 can access the same video files on my Laptop and play them with no issues. I also have a Sony TV (KDL-32CX523) which can access and play the video files on the USB attached to my Huawei HG533 Wi-Fi Router.

I've found a bit more research that says the SMP-N100 will only play DivX Video files over DLNA, which I have tested and it did work. I mainly wanted to download Itunes Podcasts to the Router USB storage and then stream this to my SMP-N100 or other devices.

I have Serviio on my Laptop which is why the SMP-N100 can access the same video files on my Laptop and play them with no issues and so I wondered if there was anyway I could install Serviio on my USB plugged into the Huawei HG533 Wi-Fi Router to enable me to play the files from the USB OK?

Thanks in advance...

Re: Huawei HG533 USB DLNA port question?

Unless your Huawei router can support third party apps, then no, you cannot do this.

The reason it works from your PC is that Serviio (or other software) is transcoding the file to a format your Sony SMP-N100 understands. The router's built in DLNA server hasn't got this capability - it can stream video, but won't transcode it. To enable this you would need to run Serviio or similar on the router which is likely not possible (and even if it is, the router probably wouldn't have the processing power to transcode effectively).

So you can use your router as a DLNA streamer, but only for files that your renderer natively supports over DLNA. This then becomes a problem when you have multiple renderers if they support differing video types.

I bought my router (a Netgear DGND3700) thinking I could use it as a DLNA server, but quickly learned that without transcoding it wasn't any value to me (as I also have multiple devices that have different capabilities). Live and learn :)

Hi,

thanks for the reply.

I didn't think it would be an option, but thought I'd ask.

I guess I'll have to go down the route of transcoding the Video files to Xvid.
