UTF-8 vs UTF-16

Hello. So, I'm doing some test with different subtitles encodings. I have serviio 1.2 installed on my WHS 2011 machine and I play videos using MPC-HC on my PC, Samsung 40D5500 TV and Samsung 40C550 TV. Sometimes I'm also using Media Browser to watch movies in web browser. I'm using Czech subtitles in SRT file format.

Is it better to use UTF-8 or UTF-16? I don't care about file size, but what I have tested so far, I find UTF-16 much better for Serviio than UTF-8. To change file encoding, I'm using Windows application Notepad 2 version 4.2.25. I can set UTF-8, UTF-8 Signature (with BOM), Unicode (UTF-16 LE) and Unicode BE (UTF-8 BE). Using Unicode (UTF-16 LE) works everywhere. If I set UTF-8, MPC-HC and both Samsung TVs will not display subtitles right. When I use UTF-8 with BOM, MPC-HC works, but both TVs don't. Only UTF-16 works everywhere so far (including web Mediabrowser).

So, my questing is, why do you recomend using UTF-8 on your support site? Is it only coincidence that UTF-16 works much better for me than UTF-8? Or is there someting else?

Regards, lubofm.

Re: UTF-8 vs UTF-16

Normally UTF-8 should work, both in FFmpeg and the renderers. It works on my sets. Try to convert your files using PSPad.
