Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

I have an ST60 and using Serviio with it last few days to test.

Firstly there is no profile for this model.

Thought most files play using the 2012 profile, I have had difficulty with a couple of files.
Here are the details of the first one:

  Code:

I have tried the 2011 and 2012 series along with the generic profile. I have tried Transcoding and also tried unchecking the Transcoding. Also tried downmixing the audio.
For every change, I have restarted the service on my Windows 7 PC and tried again.

With the 2012 profile, I can see that the audio is ahead of the video, but both get stuck every few seconds. I am not sure where the problem is.
With the other profiles, the file is simply not supported. Also without transcoding, the file is not supported.

Can someone tell me what changes I should make to the profile?

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

Hi Xman - in order of likelihood:
Your file has header compression, which is not often supported. Try removing that first using MKVToolnix: viewtopic.php?f=6&t=1132. Also when using MKVToolnix add the "--clusters-in-meta-seek" option (Muxing menu, Add Command Line Options) as this will improve your ability to seek, ffw and rewind.

If that doesn't work, the other issue may be that the audio is AAC (you haven't included the audio information from MediaInfo for some reason, so I can't tell much more). This may not be supported by your TV within an MKV container. Try adding to the Panasonic Viera G/GT/DT/UT/VT (2011/2012) profile (edit profiles.xml using a text editor - once done restart your PC) :

    <Matches container="matroska" vCodec="h264" aCodec="aac" />
    above the existing line:
    <Matches container="matroska" vCodec="h264" aCodec="flac" />
If this doesn't fix the issue remember to back out the change.

I note that the ST60 supports MKV and MP4 natively, so you may need to create a new profile (the Panasonic Viera G/GT/DT/UT/VT (2011/2012) profile remuxes some MKV's and most MP4's for example, which is unlikely to be necessary for your TV).

As this is a new TV you may want to assist the forum by detailing what protocols it supports. Can you try: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=19. Unfortunately this does not always work for Panasonic TV's, however it may do for the new model.

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

Thank you for taking time out to write such an elaborate reply. I really appreciate this.

Now for some comments inline.

That looks like an elaborate process. I hope I don't have to do it for many videos. I will get back on this when I get home in the evening.

I am going to try and attach what is supported by this TV from the Owner's manual. Unfortunately it is an image, since I cannot copy from the original PDF.

Based on this, it seems that AAC is supported within MKV by the TV itself. However, when I tried to play the movie (or the sample file of the movie) via USB hard disk, it did not work (got File not supported or some similar error). So, I think audio is not a problem, but I could be wrong.

Try adding to the Panasonic Viera G/GT/DT/UT/VT (2011/2012) profile (edit profiles.xml using a text editor - once done restart your PC) :
    <Matches container="matroska" vCodec="h264" aCodec="aac" />

Can I just restart the serviio service from the Services.msc applet? After that from the console, I stop and start the service again. I hope that is the right way.
Unfortunately after doing the restart of the service, my TV does not find the DLNA server many times. I have to turn the TV off and turn it back on (I am on wired network, still).

I note that the ST60 supports MKV and MP4 natively, so you may need to create a new profile (the Panasonic Viera G/GT/DT/UT/VT (2011/2012) profile remuxes some MKV's and most MP4's for example, which is unlikely to be necessary for your TV).

Please see the supported format graphic images that I have attached in this post and write back.

As this is a new TV you may want to assist the forum by detailing what protocols it supports. Can you try: viewtopic.php?f=5&t=19. Unfortunately this does not always work for Panasonic TV's, however it may do for the new model.

I am more than willing to contribute. I have a powerful desktop where Serviio is installed and I have a 100 Mbps LAN on which the TV is connected.
While I am completely new to DLNA and Serviio, I am eager to learn more.
I will try the process in that link and see if it works for this TV.
Else, we have to look at some other ways to find out what "protocols' are supported.

Also, where can I get a sample of different video formats for testing?
I have the following movie samples which are not playing:
1. H264-MPEG-4 AVC (avc1) + DTS Audio (dts)
2. MPEG-4 (XVID) + mpga

Also, further to that last MediaInfo output, I have another output for the sample of the same movie. I noticed it does not have any header compression related information. This sample also does NOT play properly on the TV.

Yes, you can start/stop from services.msc (I didn't go down that path as it confuses some ;) ). You don't however need to follow it up with the console start/stop. However based on your new post, it looks like AAC is supported in an MKV container - so you are correct, audio may not be the problem and the mods to the profile I suggested in my post above should not be needed (you may still want to check as Panasonic manuals are not always accurate particularly in respect to DLNA, but lets leave that for now).

I have the following movie samples which are not playing:
1. H264-MPEG-4 AVC (avc1) + DTS Audio (dts)
From the manual it doesn't appear that DTS is supported in an MP4 container. This will likely need to be transcoded. Do this by editing the Panasonic Viera G/GT/DT/UT/VT (2011/2012) profile to add:
  Code:
   <Matches container="mp4" vCodec="h264" aCodec="dca" />
above the line
   <Matches container="mp4" vCodec="h264" aCodec="aac" />
2. MPEG-4 (XVID) + mpga
Can you please post a MediaInfo for this file.

I must also apologize - in your second MediaInfo sample (I then checked the first one and its the same which I missed  ) I noticed the file has a h264 profile level of 5.0. This is also a prime target as being the culprit. To test if it is, in the Panasonic Viera G/GT/DT/UT/VT (2011/2012) profile remove the commenting from this code:
  Code:
<!-- Video targetContainer="mpegts" targetVCodec="mpeg2video" targetACodec="ac3" forceInheritance="true">
   <Matches container="*" vCodec="h264" profile="high" levelGreaterThan="4.1" />
   <Matches container="*" vCodec="h264" profile="main" levelGreaterThan="4.1" />
</Video -->
by removing "!-- " on the first line and the " --" on the last line. This will tell Serviio to transcode any video with a high profile. Unfortunately transcoding is the only way to fix this if the TV doesn't support higher level h264 profiles.

All of the above is still playing with the existing 2011/12 profile for testing. I think the next step will be to create a new 2013 profile (it may pay to back up your original profiles.xml file as we may come back to that). btw, download Notepad++ - it makes editing .xml files much easier as it colour codes everything.

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

Ok. I will try these suggestions and get back. I will also make a backup of the profile file before making these mods.

The specs sheet may be incorrect as well, like you mentioned. Else there would be no need for me to go down the DLNA route since the TV claims to support so many different formats.

BTW: Is it also true that there is a loss of quality in doing transcoding? I have a feeling that there is a loss of quality when I use DLNA compared to when I use the USB port directly on the TV.

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

When you transcode the video then yes, there can often be a loss of quality - especially if you are going from a high level to a lower bit rate file. Whether its discernable or not is the next question - sometimes I cant tell the difference, sometimes I can. I try and avoid transcoding video wherever possible but mainly because of the load on the CPU, particularly at high resolution, which can lead to stuttering. Remuxing has no loss of quality, and little CPU load.

Also, wrt viewtopic.php?f=13&t=10741&p=73002#p73002 and above:
Unfortunately after doing the restart of the service, my TV does not find the DLNA server many times. I have to turn the TV off and turn it back on (I am on wired network, still).
Do you have static IP addresses, particularly on the PC Serviio is on? This symptom may be due to your IP address changing when restarting?

No static IP's. However, I think the DHCP lease is quite long, but I will double check on that tonight. Hopefully all systems/ devices should get the same IP for a long time.

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

So, here is what I did so far:
1. Used MKVToolnix tool as described in the earlier post. I used that on both the movie file and the sample movie file. So at the end I have four MKV files in my folder.
2. I edited profile file and uncommented the section about level > 4.1 and also added the line about dca.
Here is the section of the profile file:

Restarted Serviio from services applet and tried playing all the four files via DLNA.
There is no change in the way the files are handled by the TV. They get stuck, the audio is ahead of the video and the frames are displayed every 20-30 seconds.

What else should I try now?

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

I tried using DeviceSpy and I could see three entries for the ST60.

The first entry is for Standard type = MediaRenderer
The ouptut of the Invoke operation was
  Code:

The third entry of the ST series was with Standard type= MediaServer
The Invoke option does not give anything in the Sink output.

So, from the DLNA website, I got the following certificate information.

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

Hmmm... I would have expected some change for the mkv file. Previously it shouldn't have been transcoding, now it should be....

I think we need to take stock of where we're at (sorry, its a bit of work for you) and see what Serviio is doing via a detailed log.

Firstly, turn on detailed logging (you may want to keep library details at the INFO level though to keep the file size down - see viewtopic.php?f=3&t=1796) and then using MediaInfo to view media parameters, and using the modified profile, can you test the following:

  • MKV File, level 5.0 with header stripping
  • MKV File, level 5.0 without header stripping
  • MKV File, level <4.2
  • AVI File
Then repeat the test with Transcoding turned off. For the AVI problem, edit the profile to remove (or comment out) the <MediaFormatProfiles> section. See if that helps - once again test with and without transcoding on (this file shouldn't be transcoded...). Once done post the log here (you may have to compress it), and turn off detailed logging. Lastly, throughout all of this monitor your CPU usage and see if it max's out (this could be what is causing the freezing - just not enough grunt to transcode).

</edit> Also try all these files via the USB port....</edit>

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

I will do the detailed analysis shortly.
However, do note that I have a Intel Core i7 920 CPU. I have monitored the CPU utilization last week when it was transcoding a SBS 3D movie (MKV file) which did not show up on the TV. The file size was around 3.8 GB and the temp directory created a transcoded file around the same size after about 15-20 minutes.
The CPU utilization was around 20-50% mostly, never more than that.
I also have 6 GB of DDR3 RAM (it it helps in anyway, out of which around 2GB is mostly what is used).

So, like I said, it is a powerful desktop, enough to do video transcoding. BTW: What setting in Serviio should i use for maximum performance? I am currently using the 'Optimal' setting from the drop down.

Last evening, I connected my USB HDD directly to the TV (without Serviio) and tested about 50-70 movie files in various formats.
I will analyze what got played and what did not in a few days. Then I can compare what gets played and cannot 1. directly and 2. via Serviio (DLNA).

Edit: Also note that in your previous post you have mentioned about testing MKV and AVI files.

I have to say that based on my last evening's experience, the TV can directly play some AVI files and fails to play some other AVI files. The same observation for FLV files as well.
So, I am not sure what the difference is between the files with the same extension, but I will find out using MediaInfo.

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

Just a quick update (not related to Serviio though)
The ST60 can play the following formats when connected directly to a USB HDD.

MPEG4 (AVI/ AAC)
AVI (XVID/ AAC)
MPEG4 (AVC)
.3gp
.mp4

It cannot play
DivX1,2,3,4 or anything else.
MKV/AVC (Level 4)

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

The AVI/Divx problem can be fixed by using the Panasonic Viera E/S/ST/VT (2011) profile. This is exactly the same as (extends) the Panasonic Viera G/GT/DT/UT/VT (2011/2012) profile, with the exception that it now transcodes all AVI files.

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

Further to my last post, here are some more supported file format that the TV can play directly via USB. No Serviio was needed.

Movie 1--------
  Code:
Format                                   : BDAV
Extension                        :M2TS
Format                                   : AVC
Format/Info                              : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile                           : High@L4.0
Format/Info                              : Audio Coding 3

Movie 2
--------
  Code:
ormat                                   : Matroska
Extension                        :MKV
Format                                   : AVC
Format/Info                              : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile                           : High@L4.1
Muxing mode                              : Header stripping
Bit rate                                 : 12.6 Mbps

Audio #1
ID                                       : 2
Format                                   : DTS
Format/Info                              : Digital Theater Systems
Format profile                           : ES
Mode                                     : 16
Format settings, Endianness              : Big
Muxing mode                              : Header stripping
Codec ID                                 : A_DTS

Audio #2
ID                                       : 3
Format                                   : AC-3
Format/Info                              : Audio Coding 3
Mode extension                           : CM (complete main)
Format settings, Endianness              : Big
Muxing mode                              : Header stripping
Codec ID                                 : A_AC3

Notice the header stripping in this file.
This file always starts playing normally for a few minutes and then freezes after a minute or so. Then after about 5-10 seconds it resumes playback. It will freeze about 2-3 times in around 40 minutes of the movie play time. So, either it is the header stripping or the DTS audio which is causing the TV's CPU to overload.

Movie 3
--------
  Code:
Format                                   : MPEG-4
Extension                        :M2TS
Format                                   : AVC
Format/Info                              : Advanced Video Codec
Format profile                           : High@L3.0
Maximum bit rate                         : 6 934 Kbps

Format                                   : AAC
Format/Info                              : Advanced Audio Codec
Format profile                           : HE-AAC / LC

Channel positions                        : Front: L C R, Side: L R, LFE
Format                                   : AAC
Format/Info                              : Advanced Audio Codec
Channel positions                        : Front: L R

Hope this helps in setting the profile for 2013 lineup (in case it is different for 2012.

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

Currently testing files that I have shortlisted.

Even after unchecking the "Enable transcoding" checkbox, I can see from the logs and the CPU utilization that Serviio is delivering the file with transcoding. I have restarted the service and tried again, still my CPU shoots up due to the transcoding.

Is that normal?

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

There is a bug either with the TV or Serviio.
On a transcoded file, where 70% CPU is being utilized, if you forward the movie, and try to catch up from where you stopped viewing yesterday, chances are that the movie counter goes out of sync with the movie and the movie contents repeat over.
So, for example in a 2 hour movie, if I keep forwarding from the first few minutes, then at 30 minutes, the scene from the 4th movie got repeated. In another attempt, I tried to continue watching scene at 90 minutes, but the scene just did not come and I have to forward upto 120 miutes (till the end of the movie), but content shown was of much earlier time frame.

Tried 3-4 times and very slow forwarding. Finally managed to continue from where we left.

One more observation.

The following file - audio does not work at - there are no errors, but no sound either. Nothing wrong with my audio settings, since other movies play fine.

Re: Panasonic 2013 models (ST60)

I'm here :D . Have been off on a skiing holiday for the last week, so am only now able to get back into it.

Some comments:
Even after unchecking the "Enable transcoding" checkbox, I can see from the logs and the CPU utilization that Serviio is delivering the file with transcoding.... Is that normal?
No. Are you certain you pressed Save after enabling/disabling transcoding? Instead of disabling transcoding you can also select the Generic DLNA Profile (still have to press Save) for the TV.

This makes the spreadsheet results a little questionable as your transcoded/not-transcoded results are the same.
There is a bug either with the TV or Serviio.
Some of what you describe is "normal" (rather a limitation due to inconsistent implementation of DLNA amongst TV manufacturers), some is weird.
  • When a file is transcoded, Serviio constructs a temporary file. This takes time to make, so you cannot forward beyond what has yet to be created.
  • When you restart Serviio (overnight) or if a new transcode job is started from the same TV then the temporary file is deleted. Hence it sometimes cannot restart the movie from where you left off;
  • My understanding is that for some TV's (yes the Pana), when seeking (fwding and rewinding) in certain files Serviio needs to estimate the position in the movie the TV requests (it needs to convert a time based request to a byte position in the file... for a file that is not yet fully constructed). This can result in slow forwarding/rewinding and in erratic positioning in the file.
  • "then at 30 minutes, the scene from the 4th movie got repeated." Now that is weird, never seen it jump from one movie to another?
All of the above is some of the reason why transcoding (and remuxing) is best avoided unless necessary. In your spreadsheet only your MKV above Main L4.1 and your DIVX based AVI's need to have their video transcoded, the other files seem to be catered for directly (or with audio remuxing in the case of DTS audio).

Question: In Car Toons is DTS or AC3 the first audio stream?
