Transcoding buffer

Hi this may have been asked before or already answered but I could not find it. I am new t using serviio and the whole streaming and server thing. I have everything set up and working great. My only problem is that when im streaming a video that needs to be transcoded it plays maybe the first 30 seconds and then starts to stutter. Im assuming that it has not transcoded more and needs a minute to buffer. I have plenty of processing power and ram, but is there a way to increase the buffer size to a much greater value so I dont have to keep pausing the vides and waiting for the program to transcode my mkv files? Please remember I am new to all of this so please keep that in mind when explaining this or im asking additional questions. Thanks.

Re: Transcoding buffer

Reading your post I assume that if you do pause for long enough the movie plays fine? I also assume we are talking about local video's - not online streams.

Serviio transcodes to a temporary file on your hard drive, not to a RAM buffer or the like. As a general statement, most modern PC's should be able to transcode faster than than real-time for most files ie. faster than you are watching the movie. So if all things are working as they should, the transcoding process should keep ahead of your viewing in real time (ie. provided you don't fast forward).

Some things you can check:

  • as a new user, Serviio may have been indexing your library at the time (the first time can load your CPU up for a while - should be OK by now);
  • in Serviio console, Delivery tab, Transcoding try setting the number of CPU cores for transcoding to the maximum you have;
  • in the same area - if you are using an SSD try setting your temporary file location to a regular HDD;
  • ensure that the drive your temporary file location is located on a drive that has plenty of space available;
  • transcoding should be faster than real time provided that your machine is not busy doing a whole lot of other things. Check your usage monitor and see if it shows other processes are hogging the CPU or the drive that the temporary file is on.
  • lastly it could be the TV - try with a file of about the same resolution that doesn't need to be transcoded. Does this stutter?

Re: Transcoding buffer

I seem to be experiencing the same issue on my 2013 bravia xbr.
Can we tweak a setting besides the CPU within the GUI?

Much appreciated
