Choppy video

Alright, so I'm brand new to Serviio. Loving the service, but I have an issue I'm not sure on how to fix. Video stutters terribly on some movies, and not so bad on others. My videos are in mostly MKV containers, with h.264. My question is, why is it stuttering, but my CPU usage is <10%. I could understand if I was running full tilt on my CPU, but it's not really using any of it.

I'm on a sony bdp-S570 with a sony KDL-55NX810.

Computer specs that pertain to this:
FX 8350 clocked at 4.0 static with an ASUS Sabertooth 990FX R2.0, 8gb of 1600 MHz ram, 7200 RPM HDD.

I have the best quality setting set for the video, and transcoding turned on. How do I get my CPU usage up in order to transcode faster, or is that even the problem?

Also, if I pause the video for 10-15 seconds, I can watch another 10ish seconds of video, or sometimes another minute or two. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks!

Re: Choppy video

Update: just looked and the file is completely transcoded which is why the CPU usage is <3% So my new question is there some kind of bit rate issue? And if so, how do I change it with a profile. I'm not entirely sure how to do that, so some very detailed instructions would be amazing. Thanks!

Re: Choppy video

One vital piece of info, please. Is your Serviio PC and the player (TV, BD Player, etc.) hard wired into your network, or is any/all of it wireless? Depending on your video bit rates, wireless could be the culprit. Both of my wireless access points are 802.11n, but most of my playing devices (if not all) are only .11g. I think the Roku boxes might be .11n, but I hard wired them anyway.

When I used the wireless in my Panasonic ST30, I had serious issues with some of my videos, particularly the HD files. When I switched to wired Ethernet, it almost completely went away. I still have a few HD files with severe video bit rates, and the Panasonic can't keep up. My Sony media players can handle video streams up to about 45Mbps, but I have a couple that top 50, and even they stutter and are unwatchable. I just need to find the time to recode them a little smaller.

Re: Choppy video

It's wireless. not sure of the exact setup. I will say after painfully viewing a movie that sometimes stuttered, it happened with island overview scenes, water in the background, fight scenes and fast moving backgrounds. Almost every other part played just fine.

Re: Choppy video

Also, wired isn't much of a solution as my TV is downstairs on one side of the house, and my PC is upstairs on the complete opposite side of the house. can you link me to a post about how to make a profile that caps bit rate at a certain numbers? If you have a suggestion on a cap number that'd be appreciated, but if not I can fool around with the numbers and see what works best. Just not sure as to how to cap those numbers, as well as any other things I might need to set a max limit. thank you very much for your help.

Re: Choppy video

Alright. I figured out how to change the max bit rate. By default for the 570 it is set to 17000. Changed it to 12k and I'll try it out tomorrow on the same movie and see how it goes. I'll let you know if I get anywhere by lowering the bit rate sometime tomorrow afternoon.

Re: Choppy video

That's a good chance that this will resolve it. I won't be able to answer, as I fly out tomorrow to take my daughter to England to study for a semester at Bristol. I won't be back on the forums until the 24th at the earliest, so don't think I'm ignoring you! ;)

I completely understand that few homes have a cat5 network. Mine didn't, but I've strung a lot of cable where I can. For the places that I just can't get a cable, I have two wireless access points, one at each end of the house. Like I said though, HD video will strain the best wireless at times.

Re: Choppy video

Well I appreciate the help, and it has helped considerably. I still have freezing so I'm going to drop it down to 10k and see what it looks like and how it runs. Thanks again for your time and help.

Re: Choppy video

Hi all,

I seem to be experiencing the same issue as some movies stutter while transcoding.

Is this maxbit rate in the main profiles.xml file under this line ?

- <Video targetContainer="asf" targetVCodec="wmv2" targetACodec="wmav2" maxVBitrate="15360" forceStereo="true">

Return to Transcoding
