Internet Access keeps giving me a red x when testing

Hello I just installed Serviio Pro trial yesterday on Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials I set it up and have no issue accessing from the local host or clients over LAN but when I turn on my phones internet sharing connect a PC to it and try to connect from my mobile network it doesn't work. I have it configured (http://staticipaddress:23424/mediabrowser) I have manually forwarded that port and I have allowed Serviio through my firewall for domain private and public access but still I get the red x upon testing and no access off LAN. I having been using Subsonic now for about 6 months and although it performs great I was looking for something more visually appealing I have XBMC on my HTPC's but that doesn't help me for remote access. I have started a Plex Server on the same computer prior installing Serviio and while it gives me the eye candy I am looking for I don't like the fact that it doesn't run as a service and it is having issues finding all of my media. I like how Serviio looks and so far I am impressed with the playback performance but if I can't get it to work remotely I have no reason to pay for the license. If you could get me up and running properly I will definitely purchase. I look forward to hearing back from you.

Re: Internet Access keeps giving me a red x when testing

*Bump* I am in the exact same boat. I bought a license, and for the life of me can't get it to connect remotely. I've followed the Q&A guides as well as scoured these forums for an answer and just can't find any. Are there any guru's out there want to lend us some of your advice? Not trying to hijak DOS76's thread or anything, but we are in almost the exact same boat. My details are I've created a port forward for 23424 and downloaded PFPortchecker and it always fails on the third step stating that the port isn't open. On a side note, I'm trying to connect through a router (192.168.8.1)that's connected to a router/modem (192.168.0.1) which acts as the gateway, and I think that might be the issue... as my computer ip is 192.168.8.102 and the gateway is on 192.168.0.1 (I think it's called a different subnet but I'm not sure). I just don't know enough about this to make any intelligent judgement. Anything would be helpful. Thank you.

And Thank you to DOS76 for starting this thread.

Re: Internet Access keeps giving me a red x when testing

@dennisjanderson.

I assume you have good reasons for setting up two routers like this (and yes, it creates two subnets) as it introduces a lot of pain unless you know what you are doing. If it wasn't your intent, then double NAT'ting like you have done is never a good idea unless you have a specific need for it. You may want to look at other options - setting the second router up as a switch rather than a router (if you can for this router), setting the first router up as a bridge, turning off DHCP on the second router, or simply replacing the 2nd router with a proper switch (they're quite cheap), for example. What works best will depend on your setup and what devices you have hanging on each router. Do you know any local guru's :)

Notwithstanding, although not good practice you can still do what you are trying to do. You need to manually port forward both routers. Serviio's automatic forwarding will not work in your case. A good explanation of what you need to do is here: http://portforward.com/help/doubleroute ... arding.htm

Although not related to remote access, please note that on your LAN, all DLNA devices must be on the same subnet that Serviio is on (ie. all TV's. blu-rays, etc that you connect to Serviio locally need to be on the 192.168.8.xxx subnet).

@DOS76.

Can't see what the issue may be, you seem to have done everything correctly. You may want to try forwarding the port to another PC (with a temporary Serviio install).. this will tell you if the problem is in the router port forwarding, or the server is blocking it. At least that may help isolate the problem.

Don't rely on the red X (I don't think you are), use something like http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/.

Re: Internet Access keeps giving me a red x when testing

Thanks! The reason I have it connected like this is to bypass my ISP's required yet outdated wireless G modem/router... we wanted to upgrade our network to wireless N which is much faster for streaming DLNA and connecting all the wireless devices we have (all our devices are on the second router). So far it's worked pretty well until we needed to do anything other than LAN and connecting to the internet, but clearly there is a reason why it shouldn't be like this.

If I gather from what you said, I have 3 choices:
1. Create Bridge on 1st router and disable DHCP on 2nd router (seems like the easiest)
2. Turning the router into a switch or replacing with switch (which I really wouldn't want to do or we'd lose wireless N)
3. Port forward both routers, which can be tricky

Out of the three options you mentioned, would there be a choice that works best for this situation?

Again, thank you so much! I was banging my head on the wall for hours yesterday trying to figure this out (my wife was getting sick of the noise :lol: ). I'm excited to set this up when I get home from work today.

You should be able to put the second router into access point mode so that you can use wireless N while letting the first router deal with DHCP. what router is it?

You have option 1 slightly wrong - if R1 is a bridge, then R2 must have DHCP enabled. Its an OK solution - the problem with this is that (a) R1 is the ISP router they may not want/allow it to be in bridged mode as (b) a bridge is hard to manage.

I'd probably go with option 2. The simplest way to do this is to (I haven't done this for ages, so am working from a rusty memory):
  • Turn off DHCP on R2
  • Disconnect the cable from the WAN port of R2 and connect it to a spare LAN port on R2.
This effectively turns the second router into a switch. All LAN devices will get their IP address from R1 (192.168.0.x). You still need to forward R1 (but automatic forwarding may work). It assumes you have a spare LAN port though... Have a read of http://graemenoble.id.au/post/486952770 ... -solutions.

Re: Internet Access keeps giving me a red x when testing

TY so much to everyone!

@Dennyall
Really, you have gone above and beyond to help! That was so much easier than I thought. I followed your advice and turned R2 into a switch. I did the port forward in R1 and viola! it worked. I tested the port through here:

http://www.yougetsignal.com/tools/open-ports/ and it passed!

One last thing, it's still giving me the red x when I "check connectivity status." I've tried automatic without success (which is probably normal with my setup), but when I follow the guide here http://www.serviio.org/mediabrowser#remote_access and setup my domain name for my ip address, it's still giving me a red x. I've tried it with the check in the "automatically configure modem..." box and without it , and the variations I've tried are:

http://xxxxxxxxx.dnsdynamic.com:23424/mediabrowser
xxxxxxxx.dnsdynamic.com:23424/mediabrowser
and I even tried just my static IP
xxx.xx.xx.xx:23424/mediabrowser

No matter what I try, it always gives me the red "x" almost immediately I might add. Am I entering in that information wrong? I sure hope so, cause at this point I don't care about looking dumb as much as just getting this up and working :roll:

On a side note, I am using my correct IP address from http://www.whatismyip.com/ and from the first website I listed to check my port status. Is there some external or internal source that could be causing the red "x" no matter what I do, even though the port is open? Could a fresh install of serviio possibly correct this, or would that be unrelated?

I know you've already done so much to help, is there any other advice you could give me?

Re: Internet Access keeps giving me a red x when testing

You should put xxxxxxxxx.dnsdynamic.com into the remote address box in the Serviio Console.

Then as long as http://xxxxxxxxx.dnsdynamic.com:23424/mediabrowser works then all is OK.

Right I've done that... you're referring to the "external address" box on the remote tab, right? So that would lead me to assume that my dnsdynamic.com isn't working? But even if that isn't working, my static IP xxx.xx.xxx.xx:23424/mediabrowser would at least still work right? Or do I require the domain in order for this to work?

By static IP, do you mean the one that you allocated to your PC I.e 192.168.xxx.xxx or 10.xxx.xxx.xxx, or the one that can be found by Google search for what's my IP (this is not usually static)

However, does MediaBrowser work in your browser using the dynamic DNS address?

The one I found on what's my IP. Sorry for not being clear. Will that not work? PS thanks for the quick replies!

Let's start again

Does http://dyndnsaddress:23424/MediaBrowser work in your web browser?

What does check connectivity status give you if you leave the external address box empty?

No it doesn't work. when I go to my http://dyndnsaddress:23424/MediaBrowser I get the message: Oops! Google Chrome could not find dennifer:23424

When I don't have a check in the box, it's still a red x.

Sorry to be more clear on connectivity status if the box is empty, it's still a red x. No matter what I do, it's a red x lol. I've tried every combination I can think of. :cry:

@Will

Thank you. It must be a bug in my installed serviio. I installed serviigo on my android and it works now :) I'm still getting the red x no matter what when I test, but it works!! Now I can take my library with me wherever I go. Thank you all so much.... I never could have done this on my own.

One last note to anyone who might be having the same problem as me, I just put a check in the box to have Serviio "Automatically configure your router..." and left the external address box blank. Even though it gives you a red "x" click on "check connectivity status" it still might work, so check with serviigo if that is what you're trying to do. Good luck!

Yes the automatically configure your router is required unless you manually forward the port (but note it doesn't work with all routers).

The external address box doesn't actually change anything on the Serviio side, its there to make it easier for clients to setup automatically. If you leave the external address box blank, then ServiiGo will be setup to connect the server using the private IP address which only works when connected to your home network. But if ServiiGo is working when you disconnect from your WiFi network then it must be working.
