Cannot connect from Remote Console

Hello,

I'm new to Serviio as of this morning. I installed Serviio ver: 1.5 on my server (Server 2012 Essentials) and all appears to be functioning on the server and local console. My issue is when attempting to connect via the Remote Console (Windows 7 Pro). After a protracted period of time the only indication is an error notice that it can't connect to the server. Below is the log excerpt from the remote (client) . The server log, obviously, makes no reference to any type of attempted remote console connection. I checked permissions and unless I'm missing something, they all appear to be appropriate. I verified the install program added rules to both the client and server firewalls. I updated Java to the current release on both the client and server, as well. My DLNA client devices recognize the server and the library listings, but as the library is still loading, I'm gathering that is why they aren't able to play and report track length times at zero. What am I missing with the remote console issue?

However, each track is preceded by an "X" and the track time is zero on all selections on the DirecTV clients----and they don't play. The Sony BD DLNA also displays the titles but when attempting to play returns an error indicating incompatible file type. This was after the library had fully loaded on the Serviio server.

Re: Cannot connect from Remote Console

Does the server run on 192.168.0.106 ?

make sure port 23423 is open in the firewall on the server side.

Re: Cannot connect from Remote Console

Yes, the server IP address is 192.168.0.106 and although the Serviio install added pre-defined rules to the firewall that should have taken care of opening port 23423, I created another one specific to port 23423. I still cannot open a remote console.

Update 02/02/2015: Apparently my media database is partially corrupted. I could open all files from Windows Media Player successfully, but I could not open any from the DirecTV receivers or the Sony BD player. I tried a Samsung TV (that never worked when Windows Media Player was the DLNA server) and it played every track I tried. So I copied an OEM music CD to the database (in wma format) and it's tracks play from the Sony BD--but none of the other pre-existing tracks. The fresh database load would still not play from the DIrecTV receivers--just listed in the on-screen directory with an "X" in front of each title and the track length at zero as before. I ran the Windows Media Player Database troubleshooting and it reported the database as being corrupted, as well----even though Media Player access/played without issue. So I'm gathering the database is corrupted, which doesn't necessarily come as a surprise as I moved it from several OS and HD drives over the years. I now have tried several Brands/models of DLNA clients on my test database and all function but the DirecTV receivers (non-Genie). These used to work a few years ago when the Windows Media Player (on XP OS) was the DLNA server. However, I do note that in the upper right corner of the "DirecTV Media Share" screen logo it has "beta" in a red circle. So I'm gathering DirecTV has made a change that my receivers inherited by the automatic software updating.

Re: Cannot connect from Remote Console

the firewall port you opened is on the server, right? incoming traffic.

Re: Cannot connect from Remote Console

Correct, port 23423 opened on the server. I added an incoming rule to the firewall.

Re: Cannot connect from Remote Console

My WMP experience...
WMP takes ownership of your media files, when added to its library.
You're gonna have to remove permissions from all the files, can put them all in one folder to do it.
Just Google Windows 7 folder permissions, and remove all, then you'll have to take ownership of the files/folders...Google how to do that too.
Had that problem before with Serviio, and that fixed it. Your library is not corrupt, it just has been moved around to much, and permissions are screwed up.

As for the remote console. Same subnet? Static IPs? Windows network discovery service started?
Once disabled "unnecessary services" and lost my LAN sharing. Guess they were "necessary."

Re: Cannot connect from Remote Console

Hi,

Yes, the network configuration is correct. I'd be having other issues if it wasn't. To clarify: the server has a static IP of 192.168.0.106. The Remote Console PC is a DHCP client with an assigned address of 192.168.0.252. The entire DHCP address pool is within the same subnet. I did verify all the appropriate services were running. The server is a ground up new as of a few weeks ago in both hardware (Dell T320) and software (Server 2012 Essentials). So it is pretty much unmolested. Of course, that doesn't mean there is not some bug(s) in the code. After all, once I installed the software there was over 60 updates that took nearly all night to download/install---and this is Release 2!

I did make some headway on the DirecTV receiver playback issue. I'll publish my findings on that within my next post, as I need to do other things now.

What happens when you open this URL?

Re: Cannot connect from Remote Console

Remote Console

The browser returns the message: "This page can't be displayed."

I did completely disable the firewall (for temporary testing) on the server and experience no change. I also tried from another client with the same results.

I'm speculating it has something to do with the security parameters in Group Policy. Our previous server was SBS2000 (Windows Server 2000), so Server 2012 was quite a leap in security protocols that I'm not accustomed to. I ran into some difficulties configuring VPN access and that was settings in Group Policy. Anyone have any experience with Group Policy configurations that would inhibit a Remote Console?

DirecTV & Sony BD Player

The issue I was having with DirecTV receivers and the Sony BD player was the predefined render definitions did not support transcoding from a .wma file. Apparently, the Samsung TV definition did. I stumbled across this by accident when I was evaluating different file formats to utilize when re-constructing my library. When testing for compatibility, utilizing the FLAC format for my source library, it has functioned with every predefined render definition that I have utilized thus far.
